Madonna University Graduates | 2020 1 Madonna University 2020 Graduates Congratulations to all of the graduates. In recognition of this milestone event in your life, and given that current circumstances prevent me from addressing you in person, I am writing to extend my heartfelt congratu- lations on completing all of the requirements for your degree at Madonna University.
As I’ve said before, the decision to close the campus pained me deeply. And, one of the most difficult of those decisions was to postpone our Commencement ceremony. This is a very sad result of the Coronavirus outbreak. I want you to know how much celebrat- ing commencement means to all of us. The administration, your professors, and our staff members share in your loss.
With that in mind, I assure you that we will have an appropriate ceremony as soon as I can arrange it within our state restrictions. While I can’t say for certain what this will look like, I want you to know what I envision.
We may have several smaller ceremonies, with flexible dates, making sure you and your family members can attend while practicing social distancing. I am committed to handing you your degree in person with all of the pomp and circumstance that make academic ceremonies like this special. We are planning that every graduate will have an opportunity to be personally recognized.

Madonna University Graduates | 2020 43 Madonna University Tradition The Significance of Academic Regalia According to customs defined in the 1890s and generally followed since, the academic regalia indicates: Gown – generally black; the bachelor’s has a long pointed sleeve, the master’s usually slit in the arm or elbow for the arm to protrude with the sleeve hanging down to the hemline. Doctors’ gowns are fuller, with velvet panels down the front and often velvet bars on the sleeves. Madonna’s doctoral gowns are the University’s blue with black and gold trim. Hood – the most telling of garments, no longer needed to keep the professor and student warm, indicates the level of the degree (by length of the hood and width of the velvet trim), the faculty in which the degree was earned (by color of the velvet trim) and the college or university which made the award (by the satin colors exposed in the lining). Madonna University colors are blue and gold. The velvet trim seen today will reveal degrees in the arts and letters (white), science (yellow), nursing (apricot), social work (citron), education (light blue), business (light brown), philosophy (dark blue), music (pink), theology (scarlet). The mortarboard is the most common form of academic head covering, although a soft beret-style cap has been adopted by some schools. The tassel for doctors is gold. Chain of Office and Academic Processional Mace The Presidential Chain of Office symbolizes the authority vested in the Office of the President by the Madonna University Board of Trustees. Donated by Dianne Saholski, and designed and hand-crafted by Marian Owczarski†, the Chain of Office is comprised of a medallion that depicts the University seal, and a gold chain that includes the “M with the flame” enhanced in the school colors of blue and gold, and amber semi-precious stones that reflect the Polish ethnic roots of the Felician Sisters, the University founders. An Academic Mace is a ceremonial scepter providing a connection with the past. A descendant of the medieval mace, it often appears as a ceremonial staff used in processions that precede royalty, magistrates, church and university officials. During the ceremony it serves as a symbolic weapon to protect and proclaim the values of harmony, truth, justice and learning. The academic processional mace of Madonna University has distinctive symbols reflecting the mission and ideals of Madonna University: The head or crown consists of a three-sided “M” representative of the Madonna, Patroness of the University, with a large central flame emanating from the base of the crown, symbolizing the flame of wisdom as in the University motto: “Sapientia Desursum – Wisdom from Above.” The Mace’s equilateral triangles demonstrate belief in the triune God, a central theme of the Catholic heritage of the University. Other religious and academic symbols include the cross of the Christian tradition and two globes, a large one representing the terrestrial nature of the world and a smaller one symbolizing the celestial or spirit world. A terminal column serves to support and unite all the functions of the Mace. Surrounding the celestial globe and the terminal column are names representing philosophers, astronomers, theologians and spiritual leaders important to the academic heritage of Madonna University. These include: Aristotle, Plato, Copernicus, Galileo, Aquinas, Bonaventure, Teresa of Avila, Catherine of Siena and Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska, foundress of the Felician Order of Sisters. The Mace, a gift from Dr. Alan† and Mrs. Doris† Eichman, was designed and created by Artist Phillip Fike† of Detroit. The project began in 1987 and was completed in 1994.
