Musical Credits
Musical Credits This year, I used portions of 21 different songs and movie scores to provide the background music for the video segments. Keeping with the Nordic theme of the presentation, over half of the music was composed and performed by Scandinavian artists, and over half of these were by Norwegian composers or based on traditional Norwegian folk music. For you fans of the incomparable Norwegian soprano Sissel (and I count myself among her admiring subjects), I even managed to find a beautiful folk song she recorded in the original Norwegian for the video segment featuring the Flam Railway. And of course, it was an absolute must to incorporate several of the better known pieces of Edvard Grieg, Norway's most internationally acclaimed composer, in Parts 8, 9, and 10. I'm sure you'll recognize each of his themes, although unfortunately most Americans (including myself before our trip) probably know little about Grieg and therefore have never associated his music with the folk traditions of Norway before. As a fan of epic music, I couldn't help myself from incorporating several segments of three war movie scores into the "Tribute to the Heroes of Telemark" trilogy. (There are so many great war movie songs to choose from!) Hopefully, you'll recognize the themes from A Bridge Too Far , The Great Escape, and the inspiring "Heart of a Volunteer" from Pearl Harbor (the latter can be heard now and then playing in the background during tributes to American veterans of World War II). And to counter-balance these heart- swelling martial themes with the more terrible aspects of war, Act 1 closes with a brief snippet of one of the greatest anti-war songs of all times, "The Banks of the Nile," sung a cappella by the Czech-born artist Katka Garcia. -

Solo List and Reccomended List for 02-03-04 Ver 3
Please read this before using this recommended guide! The following pages are being uploaded to the OSSAA webpage STRICTLY AS A GUIDE TO SOLO AND ENSEMBLE LITERATURE. In 1999 there was a desire to have a required list of solo and ensemble literature, similar to the PML that large groups are required to perform. Many hours were spent creating the following document to provide “graded lists” of literature for every instrument and voice part. The theory was a student who made a superior rating on a solo would be required to move up the list the next year, to a more challenging solo. After 2 years of debating the issue, the music advisory committee voted NOT to continue with the solo/ensemble required list because there was simply too much music written to confine a person to perform from such a limited list. In 2001 the music advisor committee voted NOT to proceed with the required list, but rather use it as “Recommended Literature” for each instrument or voice part. Any reference to “required lists” or “no exceptions” in this document need to be ignored, as it has not been updated since 2001. If you have any questions as to the rules and regulations governing solo and ensemble events, please refer back to the OSSAA Rules and Regulation Manual for the current year, or contact the music administrator at the OSSAA. 105 SOLO ENSEMBLE REGULATIONS 1. Pianos - It is recommended that you use digital pianos when accoustic pianos are not available or if it is most cost effective to use a digital piano. -

In construction it follows the principles used by early Italian violins, but in shape Tand in the way it is tuned the Hardanger fiddle differs from the common European violin. The bridge and the fingerboard are much lower. The strings, which are specially made for the instru ment, are thinner than violin strings. The neck is shorter, as is the free length of the strings. The body of the instrument is narrower and the sound holes are longer and the edges thicker. In addition to the ‘upper’ strings the Hardanger fiddle is also fitted with up to four lower strings. The lower strings are not played by the bow and their tuning is normally fixed at A, F sharp, E and D, counting downwards. -

The interesting thing here is that they use the whole keyboard and introduce patterns that frequently appear in the more advanced pieces, so they are excellent preparatory pieces.
