The Temple of Tapkeshwar in Dehradun, also known as the Tapkeswar Mahadev Temple, is one of the most famous temples dedicated to Shiva. Located next to the forest, the main shivalinga in the temple is located inside a natural cave. Drops of water from the ceiling of the cave trickles down the shivaling in a continuous downpour, making for an interesting spectacle. The history of the Temple of Tapeshwar Mahadeva owes its importance to the natural Shiva Ling in a cave nearby. Long ago the river flowed through the caves and continuous drops of water fell on Shiv Ling. This has become a place of veneration of the local population. It is also believed that it was used as the residence of Guru Dronacharya, a respected teacher of Pandawa and Kaurawa Hindu epic Mahabharata written by Ved Vyas. The cave is thus named the Drone Cave after it. The temple features tourists in Dehradun to visit the Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple located 6 km from the main city. The Temple of Tapkeswar Mahadev is widely popular as a place of pilgrimage in Dehradun. The beautiful temple of Lord Shiva, set between two hills, attracts hundreds of tourists from inside and around Dehradun all year round. The giant statue of Lord Hanuman is the main attraction of the temple. Mythologically, this place is revered by the gods. Lord Shiva meditates in this cave. Tupkeshwar Swayambhu Shivling, located in Dronangari, Maharishi was not only a degenerate man of Dronachary, but also here Guru Dron was also educated by Mr. Shiva. In the era of Dvapara, Tappeswar was also known as Tapeshwar and Dudkheshwar. It is such a belief that even today the country and Gandharva here come to the philosophy of Lord Bhol. Lord Shiva is celebrated every day in the evening. It is believed that the present cave Tapkeshvar was inhabited by Guru Dronacharya one of the great archers of the historical era of Mahabharata. Ashwostama, who is considered an immortal character in Mahabharata and the son of one of the great archers in the war Mahabharata Dronaharyya, was born here in caves. Satisfied with his devotion and praying for six months, the great lord fed him milk, dripping over Shiv-Ling from the mountain cliffs (ceiling). Thus, the hunger and desire of the immortal Ashvatam were fulfilled. It is said that this cycle lasted until Kalyug. But later this proposal of Bhol was disrespectful. Seeing this, Lord Shiva turned milk into water, and water began to drip on Shivling. At present, the devout men of Lord Shiva Jalabhishek receive the fruits in accordance with their desires. Tapakeshwar Mahadevfruitful philosophy is this: Tasalee Darshan Maatren Mrtyu Te SabapaalakeManth festivals are celebrated in the Temple of Tapakeshwar. The temple is the main attraction for devotees during Maha Shivratri and Navratra. On the occasion of Maha Shivratri, Durga Puja and Navratra, a special Puja is organized here. The temple is decorated with flowers and lights. The spiritual environment of the temple gives peace and heart to हदी म पढ़ devotees. Famous: History, Pilgrimage, Architecture, Mythology and Travel. Entry fee: Tourists and visitors are not charged entry fees. Visit time: 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on all days of the week. Duration of visit: Approximately 1 hour to get around this temple. The samples were collected from Garhi Cant (Site 1) and Tapkeshwar temple (Site 2) at Dehradun. The results showed that temperature, velocity, DO, nitrate and phosphate affected the phytoplanktonic diversity of river Tons. Thirty five genera of phytoplankton belonging to three families of Chlorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae and Myxophyceae were also identified in the river water. The family Bacillariophyceae was dominating the river with much abundance throughout the study period. Bacillariophyceae was recorded with the maximum of 222.25±90.84 Unit/L at sampling site 1 and 239.08±125.41 Unit/L at sampling site 2. The greater number of individuals was in family Bacillariophyceae (239.08±125.41 Unit/L) followed by Chlorophyceae (183.75±112.50 Unit/L) and Myxophyceae (40.91±36.16 Unit/L) during the study period.

Samples were collected on the monthly basis since January to March, 2011 from three sites viz confluence zone of temple, upstream and downstream river water. Total number of nine samples were analysed and a correlation matrices among parameters was determined. River water was showing alkaline character throughout the study period. pH, alkalinity and chloride were found to be under the acceptable limit of BIS (2009), although turbidity and hardness were exceeding the limits at all three sites but total dissolved solid only on confluence zone and downstream river sites. Water samples from the confluence zone near the temple showed slightly higher concentration of all the parameters than other sites. The present study reveals the slight effects of various religious activities on confluence site of tons river water near the temple which were found to be under the prescribed permissible limits of BIS (2009).
