Periodistas De Latin Media House Reciben Beca De Investigación,Latin Periodistas de Latin Media House reciben beca de investigación Los reportajes que se produzcan como resultado de esta beca abordarán temas de desarrollo económico y salud mental. Las historias se publicarán en los respectivos medios. (Suministrada) Periodistas del semanario Caribbean Business y la revista Buena Vida fueron seleccionados para recibir una beca de $2,000 para realizar investigaciones periodísticas en colaboración con el Centro de Periodismo Investigativo (CPI). Los reportajes que se produzcan como resultado de esta beca abordarán temas de desarrollo económico y salud mental. Las historias se publicarán en los respectivos medios. La beca es otorgada por el Instituto de Formación Periodística del CPI como parte de su oferta de desarrollo profesional para periodistas de Puerto Rico y el Caribe, en esta ocasión, con el apoyo de las organizaciones Internews, NetHope y el Center for Disaster Philanthropy. Además de Yanira Hernández (Caribbean Business) y Sandra López (Buena Vida), también recibirán una beca los periodistas Tatiana Díaz y Adriana de Jesús Salamán (NotiCel), Aiola Virella y Ronald Avila (Metro). Del 30 de mayo al 1 de junio, el Instituto realizó la jornada de talleres Periodismo de datos sobre la recuperación, en la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad Interamericana. Unos 20 participantes recibieron adiestramientos en periodismo de datos y la aportación de expertos que colaboraron con el equipo del Instituto en la localización de bases de datos y explicación de aspectos técnicos o de contexto para identificar posibles investigaciones. El maestro principal de las jornadas fue Miguel Paz, periodista investigativo chileno especializado en periodismo de datos y narrativas multimedia. Actualmente es profesor en la Escuela Graduada de Periodismo de la Universidad de CUNY en Nueva York. Paz fue Nieman-Berkman Fellow y Knight ICFJ Fellow. “La información de la que reportamos debe servir para que mi calidad de vida personal, familiar o comunitaria mejore, o debe ser información que va a empeorar mi vida personal, familiar o comunitaria, y sobre la cual me debo activar”, fue una de las lecciones que dejó Paz. Los expertos que apoyaron la jornada fueron Luis Avilés en el tema salud, José Carballo Cueto en el tema desarrollo económico, Cruz Ortiz Cuadra y Crystal Díaz en el tema seguridad alimentaria, y diversas especialistas en el tema salud mental. Estos además formaron parte del jurado de la beca, junto a Miguel Paz, el periodista Justin Auciello por Internews y periodistas del CPI. Participaron también de los talleres periodistas de El Nuevo Día, la Revista Medicina y Salud Pública, la revista Crónicas y periodistas independientes. Latin Media House prepara su operación rumbo al futuro Caribbean Business, CB en Español, Imagen, Buenavida y Agenda para la Novia son las publicaciones principales de Latin Media House. Latin Media House, compañía dueña de las principales marcas de negocios y “Lifestyle” en Puerto Rico junto a otras publicaciones y empresas, enfrentó esta semana un proceso de reestructuración que redujo en un 11% su fuerza laboral. Estos cambios que impactaron a las publicaciones Caribbean Business, CB en Español, Imagen y Buena Vida responden a las tendencias más recientes en la industria de las comunicaciones a nivel local e internacional, particularmente en la necesidad de maximizar los recursos a través de la integración de medios tanto en las propiedades impresas como en el espectro digital. Los departamentos y publicaciones formaron parte del cambio general, lo que refleja el enfoque de gestión proactiva del Grupo LMH, del que forma parte Latin Media House, así como el DRSI Call Center y los Servicios Integrados de Distribución. La necesidad de maximizar los recursos y la eficiencia son similares para las empresas de medios en Puerto Rico y en todo el mundo. “Nos estamos preparando para el futuro de la publicación y, al mismo tiempo, nos adaptamos a la realidad local. El mercado futuro de nuestros productos es principalmente fuera de Puerto Rico, pero necesitamos asegurarnos de que nuestras operaciones locales sean económicamente viables y ágiles”, expresó Heiko Faass, CEO del grupo de compañías. “Nada de esto es fácil, pero estamos en buen camino, tal y como la increíblemente positiva retroalimentación sobre nuestras renovadas publicaciones como Imagen, Buenavida o Caribbean Business muestran – o la demanda de nuestro recientemente producto lanzado, CB en Español“, añadió Faass. El periódico de negocios en español CB en Español es uno de los últimos productos de Latin Media House. A finales del verano, se distribuirán semanalmente 100,000 ejemplares, con una mayoría en el área metropolitana de San Juan y unos 30,000 ejemplares distribuidos por toda la isla, dirigidos a lectores con poder adquisitivo, como su hermano mayor, Caribbean Business. Comenzado a finales de 2015, el Grupo LMH trasladó sus tres principales publicaciones en línea y lanzó varias nuevas durante su primer año de operaciones, como la revista oficial de Atención Atención, CB en Español y más recientemente “The CB Guide to Moving to Puerto Rico“. La compañía Distributed Integrated Services (DIS) de LMH distribuye alrededor de 800 periódicos, revistas, libros y discos en toda la isla, desde el aeropuerto hasta las principales cadenas minoristas, al igual que en puntos de venta más pequeños. “Si usted compra cualquier publicación hoy en Puerto Rico, lo más probable es que la obtuvo de DIS, ya sea producida o distribuida por nosotros”, enfatizó Faass. En marzo pasado, Gaither International confirmó que las revistas de “Lifestyle” Imagen y Buenavida de LMH son las más vendidas en la isla. Con los cambios implementados en las operaciones y el departamento editorial esta semana, la compañía no anticipa cambios en el futuro previsible. Con nuevo rumbo Latin Media House en Ventas y Mercadeo La empresa de comunicaciones Latin Media House anunció la contratación de Carlos J. Pérez como el nuevo director de Ventas y Mercadeo, lo que significa un gran avance en los esfuerzos que realizan para reforzar estos departamentos y adaptarlos a las nuevas prácticas de la industria de medios. “Carlos tiene más de 25 años de experiencia en nuestra industria, trabajando en varias empresas de medios muy reconocidos en Puerto Rico, además de haber trabajado en varias de las agencias de publicidad líderes en la isla. Tiene amplia experiencia desarrollando innovadoras estrategias de ventas y mercadeo las cuales le han ayudado a liderar equipos exitosos en el pasado”, indicó el gerente de Recursos Humanos de LMH, Ibrahim Torres sobre la contratación. Pérez fungió como Director Comercial en Publi-Inversiones PR / El Vocero y ha ocupado las posiciones de Gerente de Venta Directa en Metro Puerto Rico y Ejecutivo de Ventas en la revista de farándula y entretenimiento TV Aquí. Hintzen, Chair My dissertation examines entanglements of race, place, gender, and class in Puerto Rican reggaetón. Based on ethnographic and archival research in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and in New York, New York, I argue that Puerto Rican youth engage with an African diasporic space via their participation in the popular music reggaetón. By African diasporic space, I refer to the process by which local groups incorporate diasporic resources such as cultural practices or icons from other sites in the African diaspora into new expressions of blackness that respond to their localized experiences of racial exclusion. Participation in African diasporic space not only facilitates cultural exchange across different African diasporic sites, but it also exposes local communities in these sites to new understandings and expressions of blackness from other places.     ABSTRACT LEARNING IN AN ENVIRONMENTAL SOCIAL MOVEMENT: WALKING AND LEARNING WITH THE POOR Eliezer Colón-Rivera, Ed.D. Department of Counseling, Adult and Higher Education Northern Illinois University, 2018 Jorge Jeria, Director This autoethnographic study explores how participants in the environmental social movement in Cidra, Puerto Rico, learned and produced knowledge. The data was obtained through the narration of my personal experiences as an environmental activist and founding member of Comité Despertar Cidreño, eleven individual interviews with members and sympathizers of the group, and a collective interview in the form of a focus group. The autoethnographic narrative and interviews with the research participants illustrate a production of knowledge ranging from the skills and abilities necessary to organize the struggles to the experience and knowledge about the natural environment. The study suggests that the use of participatory action research (PAR) as a tool for research and transformation, as part of Freire’s popular education conceptual framework, encouraged participants to become aware that their experiences and practices produce knowledge. The study reiterates what research on learning in social movements has demonstrated: that most of the learning is informal learning Furthermore, the individual interviews and focus group helped participants become aware of the vast amount of learning that took place during the environmental struggles. This learning, generally incidental, was not recognized before as learning by them. Yee Department of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies The body of literature that documents feminist activist efforts to eradicate gender violence in Puerto Rico does not includes and interpret contemporary feminist responses to heteropatriarchal narratives, such as feminist street performances. The purpose of this study is to investigate how feminist anti-violence activism exposes interconnections between gender and ongoing processes of violence in Puerto Rico through the use of feminist street performances. Specifically, I look into street performances denouncing gender-based violence and the oppression of historically marginalized communities in Puerto Rico during 2009: Musas Desprovistas y Sin Sostén, Ponte En Mi Falda, and Silueta de Mujer. These performances were also responding to decisions made by the governmental administration of the time and the discriminatory impact these decisions had on historically marginalized communities. The historical and social context of these feminist street performances in Puerto Rico include: (a) a riot at the Oficina de la Procuradora de las Mujeres in 2002 and (b) two “anti- violence” campaigns promoting traditional gender and family roles by former governor Luis Fortuño from 2009 to 2013.
