Cultural and Religious Studies, February 2018, Vol. 6, No. 2, 73-87 doi: 10.17265/2328-2177/2018.02.001 D DAVID PUBLISHING Localization and the Chinese Overseas: Acculturation, Assimilation, Hybridization, Creolization, and Identification TAN Chee-Beng Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China Based on materials on the localized Chinese overseas, including the Melaka Babas, who are mostly Malay-speaking Chinese, this article reflects on the use of such terms as acculturation and assimilation, as well as hybridization and creolization, in relation to highly localized Chinese. All these concepts are seen as different ways of describing cultural formation in transcultural context. In particular, the relevance of using creolization to refer to the kind of creative process of cultural formation beyond its original usage in the Caribbean is discussed. This results in the identification of fragmented creolization as in the case of the Caribbean and a rooted creolization as in the case of the Babas. The author shall first discuss the issues of assimilation and integration, followed by hybridization and creolization. This is followed by the discussion on localization of Chinese overseas and identity. The concluding section provides some remarks on the concepts reviewed, and three main categories of acculturated Chinese are identified, namely, Chinese who are linguistically assimilated but still observe major Chinese traditions, Chinese who are so acculturated to the mainstream society that they hardly practice Chinese traditions, and Chinese who are both highly localized and highly mixed “racially”. 141 CHINESE IN NEW ZEALAND: CONTRACT, PROPERTY AND LITIGATION Ruiping Ye* This paper examines how Chinese legal culture and law may influence New Zealand Chinese in their commercial activities, property transactions and litigation. It surveys the general profile of New Zealand Chinese in recent years, discusses the influences of the key principles of the Confucian legal tradition, and examines Chinese law on contract, property, the court system and litigation from a comparative perspective. La communauté chinoise est devenue depuis quelques années une importante composante de l'économie néo-zélandaise. L'auteure s'attache à demontrer dans une perspective comparatiste, l'influence de la culture juridique confucéenne et du droit des contrats chinois dans les activités commerciales, les transactions immobilières et les modes de règlement des contentieux au sein de cette communauté. This paper examines how Chinese legal culture and law may influence New Zealand Chinese in their commercial activities, property transactions and litigation in New Zealand. This is done through a discussion of the Confucian legal tradition, Chinese law on contract and property, and the court system and litigation process in China from a comparative perspective. Part I paints a broad picture of Chinese people in New Zealand. It considers the definition and diversity of "Chinese", and surveys the population, education and employment status and age groups of Chinese in New Zealand over a period of time. Part II considers the cultural background of Chinese people. It reviews the Chinese legal tradition and legal culture which forms the backdrop and often underpins the behaviour of Chinese, and highlights the likely impacts of the culture on their commercial behaviour. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract This study demonstrates how Indians with French citizenship were able through their stay in Indochina to have some say in shaping their position within the French colonial empire, and how in turn they made then' mark on Indochina itself. Known as ‘renouncers’, they gained their citizenship by renoimcing their personal laws in order to to be judged by the French civil code. Mainly residing in Cochinchina, they served primarily as functionaries in the French colonial administration, and spent the early decades of their stay battling to secure recognition of their electoral and civil rights in the colony. Their presence in Indochina in turn had an important influence on the ways in which the peoples of Indochina experienced and assessed French colonialism. -

Varieties of Chinese Experience in the Pacific
CSCSD Occasional Paper Number 1, 2007 Varieties of Chinese Experience in the Pacific Bill Willmott I was born and brought up in Chengdu, China, and my love affair with China has continued to this day. Overseas Chinese communities became the major focus of my academic research first in Cambodia, then in British Columbia, and most recently in the Pacific Island countries.1 My interest in Chinese communities has always been social and cultural rather than political. The policies and activities of successive Chinese governments have not received attention from me except to the extent that they affected the structure and activities of the Chinese community I was studying. In contrast, much of the recent literature on “Chinese in the Pacific” has been concerned with either the competition between Beijing and Taiwan or with the growing role of China in aid and trade in the region. Not much I have done contributes light on those topics. When I turned my attention to the South Pacific, it seemed to me that its Chinese communities represented a lacuna in the growing corpus of work on the thirty million Chinese abroad. In terms of books, there were only David Wu’s valuable study on Papua New Guinea, Stuart Greif’s less than satisfactory book on Fiji, Gérald Coppenrath’s outdated book on Tahiti, and Nancy Tom’s fictionalised account of Western Samoa.2 I began research with two aims in mind: to fill that lacuna with some useful information and to encourage resident Chinese to research their own communities. Islamic Modernism in China: Chinese Muslim Elites, Guomindang Nation-Building, and the Limits of the Global Umma, 1900-1960 John Tseh-han Chen Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2018 John Tseh-han Chen All rights reserved ABSTRACT Islamic Modernism in China: Chinese Muslim Elites, Guomindang Nation-Building, and the Limits of the Global Umma, 1900-1960 John Tseh-han Chen Modern Chinese Muslims’ increasing connections with the Islamic world conditioned and were conditioned by their elites’ integrationist politics in China. Chinese Muslims (the “Hui”) faced a predicament during the Qing and Ottoman empire-to-nation transitions, seeking both increased contact with Muslims outside China and greater physical and sociopolitical security within the new Chinese nation-state. On the one hand, new communication and transport technologies allowed them unprecedented opportunities for transnational dialogue after centuries of real and perceived isolation. On the other, the Qing’s violent suppression of Muslim uprisings in the late nineteenth century loomed over them, as did the inescapable Han-centrism of Chinese nationalism, the ongoing intercommunal tensions between Muslims and Han, and the general territorial instability of China’s Republican era (1911-49). As a result, Islamic modernism—a set of positions emphasizing both reason and orthodoxy, and arguing that true or original Islam is compatible with science, education, democracy, women’s rights, and other “modern” norms— took on new meanings in the context of Chinese nation-making. In an emerging dynamic, ethos, and discourse of “transnationalist integrationism,” leading Chinese Muslims transformed Islamic modernism, a supposedly foreign body of thought meant to promote unity and renewal, into a reservoir of concepts and arguments to explain and justify the place of Islam and Muslims in China, and in so doing made it an integral component of Chinese state- and nation-building.
