Award recipients receive $20,000 and their respective publishers receive $2,500 to promote the winning titles. Three titles are short-listed for the Trillium Book Award for Poetry in English language, which recognizes literary achievement for a rst, second or third published work of poetry. Three titles have been short-listed for the Trillium Book Award for Children's Literature in French language, which is awarded in alternating years with the Trillium Book Awards for Poetry in French language. The winner for each of these awards receives $10,000 and their publisher $2,000 for promotion of the titles. Previous winners include international acclaimed authors and rising stars such as Souvankham Thammavongsa, Dionne Brand, Alice Munro, Margaret Atwood, Thomas King, Marguerite Andersen, Andrée Lacelle, Diya Lim, Lisa L'Heureux and François Paré to name a few. Book publishing in Canada is a $1.7 billion industry, with Ontario contributing more than two-thirds of total national operating revenue at $1.1 billion.     SCOTIABANK GILLER PRIZE NOVEMBER 9, 2020 GALA SCOTIABANK GILLER PRIZE WELCOMING REMARKS Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the 27th annual Scotiabank Giller Prize. I hope you enjoy the evening as we celebrate the very best in Canadian fiction for 2020. Writers, like publishers and booksellers, have been faced with extraordinary challenges this year; cancelled book launches and tours, delayed publication dates and lost revenue. Trying to get books into the hands of readers across the country has been difficult. All the while, writers continue to do what they do best; bear witness to history – their own, the imagined and the real outside our doors. And yet,despite the challenges, despite the social unrest, the racial injustice, the COVID-19 pandemic, we have, as in the past, received a flood of worthy Canadian titles. Books from across the country, from different communities and from diverse cultural groups, poured into our offices, along with a number of graphic novels, this being the first year we accepted works of that genre. Our distinguished jurors - Canadian writers David Chariandy, Eden Robinson and Mark Sakamoto (jury chair), British- Canadian author Tom Rachman and Guardian culture critic, Claire Armitstead, read 118 books to select an initial longlist of 14 books. On October 5, the five finalists we honour tonight – Gil Adamson, David Bergen, Shani Mootoo, Emily St. John Mandel and Souvankham Thammavongsa - were chosen. You can read all about them and their wonderful books on the following pages. You may have noticed that our gala looks a bit different this year. Instead of being held in the ballroom at the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Toronto, we’re hosting a virtual event like no other.

    G ORDON B ÖLLING The Gradual Instant: An Interview with Anne Michaels (Author Photo: David Laurence) The digital voice recorder is already turned off and Anne Michaels is just about to leave for her next interview as our conversation turns to the recent collapse of the Historical Archive of Cologne. Michaels is deeply affected as she learns the details of the destruction of Germany’s largest municipal archive. That night she begins her sold-out reading in Cologne with a few words of consolation for the loss of the ar- chive. It is early March 2009 and the Canadian poet and novelist Anne Michaels is on a brief visit to Germany to promote the release of her new book. The Winter Vault, Michaels’ second novel, will be published by McClelland & Stewart later this month. Zeitschrift für Kanada-Studien 29.2 (2009) 147-155 148 Gordon Bölling Translated as Wintergewölbe the novel is scheduled for release in Germany in late April 2009. As Michaels explains at the reading, the novel takes its title from a type of building in which the bodies of the dead are stored in winter when the ground is frozen so hard that it is impossible to bury them. Anne Michaels was born in Toronto in 1958. Prior to her success as a novelist, she had made a name for herself as a poet. Her first volume of poetry, The Weight of Oranges (1986), won the Commonwealth Prize for the Americas. Half a decade later, her second collection of verse, Miner’s Pond (1991), received the Canadian Authors Association Award for Poetry and was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award and the Trillium Award.
