  • Opaque Colors
When glazing, it helps to know which colors are transparent and which are opaque. Whether a particular color is transparent or opaque has to do simply with its inherent chemical makeup. An opaque color will offer more coverage than a transparent one; that much is obvious. But it is important to remember that opacity and transparency have nothing to do with color saturation/intensity or color permanence. Both groups contain fugitive colors as well as powerful ones (red can fade quickly in UV light; blue used in even small quantities will turn the mixture strongly blue). This list is provided to help you determine which colors are best used for underpainting, which are best for glazing right out of the tube, and which may require the use of a glazing medium. • 487008 Caput Mortuum Reddish
#487008 Caput Mortuum reddish Caput Mortuum reddish is a dark brown with a distinct red-violet component. If the color appears to belong to the family of warmer reds on cotton rag and rice paper, it clearly plays into a dark and cold violet on hot-pressed as well as handmade paper. On cotton rag paper, it is homogeneous in the surface, while on hot-pressed paper it forms a grainy structure. Even with several glazes or washes, the individual transparent layers remain easily distinguishable from one another. On handmade paper, the color reaches its full intensity with three layers. When mixed with #472508 Furnace Black (in each case the lowest application of color), it can be seen that the color forms an opaque structure when applied in concentrated form. Hand-made Paper Cotton Rag Paper Chinese Rice Paper Hot Pressed Paper Page 1 of 2 Kremer Pigmente GmbH & Co. KG · Hauptstr. 41-47 · DE-88317 Aichstetten · Tel. 0049 7565 914480 · [email protected] · www.kremer-pigmente.com We do not assume any warranty for the guidance shown above. In any case, we recommend production and evaluation of samples. Influence and properties of painting surfaces The "colorfulness" or character of a pigment is influenced not only by the different binders; a significant expression is also created by the different textures of the various painting surfaces. For example, glazing pigments appear even more "transparent" on rice paper and seem to become "one" with the painting surface. On canvas, regular or hand-made paper, on the other hand, they appear more solid and stable.
