In both China and Chinese diasporic communities around the world, education is of utmost importance and is central to childrearing in the family. In this paper, we address one of the most serious resettlement issues that new Chinese immigrants face—children’s education. We examine how receiving contexts matter for parenting, what immigrant parents do to promote their children’s education, and what enables parenting strategies to yield expected outcomes. Our analysis is based mainly on data collected from face-to-face interviews and participant observations in Chinese immigrant communities in Los Angeles and New York in the United States and in Singapore. We find that, despite different contexts of reception, new Chinese immigrant parents hold similar views and expectations on children’s education, are equally concerned about achievement outcomes, and tend to adopt overbearing parenting strategies. We also find that, while the Chinese way of parenting is severely contested in the processes of migration and adaptation, the success in promoting children’s educational excellence involves not only the right set of culturally specific strategies but also tangible support from host-society institutions and familial and ethnic social networks. -

While well regarded internationally to be robust and reputable, it will continue to face imminent challenges. The speaker for this year’s SMA Lecture, Mr Ngiam Tong Dow, taps on his deep and wide experience in various ministries to offer insights and wisdom on many issues: Singapore as an international medical centre, the possibility of supplier-induced demand in healthcare, as well as his political vision and opinion on Hainanese chicken rice. Mr Ngiam Tong Dow – NTD: In Economics, there are two types of economies – production-based and knowledge-based. The former depends on land, labour and capital, but it is the latter that Singapore really needed. This was clear to me as Chairman of Economic Development Board (EDB) in the 1980s. We could not offer cheap labour and cheap land for long. We needed to have a significant niche. At that time, we identified two key areas. -

On one hand, they were prospering economically, but were nonetheless held in contempt by the Dutch, encountered legal discrimination and faced challenges if they wanted to educate their children in European schools. Their marginal position motivated them do their utmost to become “civilized subjects”, on a par with Europeans, but they were also inspired to reinvent their Chinese identity. This contribution will highlight role played by “enlightened” Chinese, the kaoem moeda bangsa Tjina. Central to this movement were the Chinese girls known to the public as bangsawan prampoewan (the noblewomen), who wrote letters the newspaper and creating a gendered public sphere. They also performed western classical music in public. Considering the inspirational impact of bangsawan prampoewan’s enlightening achievements on non-Chinese women, it is appropriate to include them into the narrative of the history of the nation’s women’s movements. Resources A Guide for Secondary School Educators The Educator’s Guide Created in conjunction with the exhibition, SINGAPO人: Discovering Chinese Singaporean Culture Discovering Chinese Singaporean Culture This exhibition examines how the Chinese community in Singapore developed its own distinctive culture. Here, visitors discover and rediscover what it means to be a Chinese Singaporean. The aim is to develop a stronger sense of the Chinese Singaporean identity amongst youths. This will help foster a greater sense of belonging while giving them an understanding of how we are similar to or different from other Chinese communities. This exhibition presents Chinese Singaporean culture through daily life in Singapore – through the things we see, hear, do and eat every day. Therefore, the experience is highly interactive where visitors can touch various stations, play games, listen to stories and have a dialogue with the gallery. Through this exhibition, we will explore ideas of: Chinese heritage Cultural interactions Public policies The exhibition content extends classroom learning and teaching, by complementing History, Social Studies and Character & Citizenship Education subjects taught in secondary schools. It is also self-guided, where students can learn and explore independently. One of the main interactive features of the exhibition is the use of wristband tags. Students can tap their wristband tags to answer questions scattered throughout the space, trigger videos and play games. At the end of the visit, students can print out their own personalised report card which summarises their exhibition journey along with prompts for further cultural exploration beyond the exhibition. This report card serves as a starting point for them to reflect about their identity in relation to everyday life. -

NOWAK Massey University SINGAN KN÷N MUNTIL Btsisi’, Blandas, and Malays Ethnicity and Identity in the Malay Peninsula Based on Btsisi’ Folklore and Ethnohistory Abstract This article examines Btsisi’ myths, stories, and ethnohistory in order to gain an under- standing of Btsisi’ perceptions of their place in Malaysia. Three major themes run through the Btsisi’ myths and stories presented in this paper. The first theme is that Austronesian-speaking peoples have historically harassed Btsisi’, stealing their land, enslaving their children, and killing their people. The second theme is that Btsisi’ are different from their Malay neighbors, who are Muslim; and, following from the above two themes is the third theme that Btsisi’ reject the Malay’s Islamic ideal of fulfilment in pilgrimage, and hence reject their assimilation into Malay culture and identity. In addition to these three themes there are two critical issues the myths and stories point out; that Btsisi’ and other Orang Asli were original inhabitants of the Peninsula, and Btsisi’ and Blandas share a common origin and history. Btsisi’, like other Aslian peoples have encountered histori- cally aggressive and sometimes deadly hostility from Austronesian-speaking peoples. -
Singapore's Chinese-Speaking and Their Perspectives on Merger

Yet the historiography is silent on their perspectives, values, and assumptions. Using contemporary Chinese- language sources, this article argues that in approaching merger, the Chinese were chiefly concerned with livelihoods, education, and citizenship rights; saw themselves as deserving of an equal place in Malaya; conceived of a new, distinctive, multiethnic Malayan identity; and rejected communist ideology. Meanwhile, the leaders of UMNO were intent on preserving their electoral dominance and the special position of Malays in the Federation. Finally, the leaders of the PAP were desperate to retain power and needed the Federation to remove their political opponents. The interaction of these three factors explains the shape, structure, and timing of merger. This article also sheds light on the ambiguity inherent in the transfer of power and the difficulties of national identity formation in a multiethnic state. This process was determined by the ballot box – two general elections, two by-elections, and a referendum on merger in four years. The centrality of the vote to this process meant that Singapore’s Chinese-speaking1 residents, as the vast majority of the colony’s residents, played the determining role. -

IRM-2019-U-019755-Final Abstract This report provides a general map of the information environment of the Pacific Island Countries (PICs). The focus of the report is on the information environment—that is, the aggregate of individuals, organizations, and systems that shape public opinion through the dissemination of news and information—in the PICs. In this report, we provide a current understanding of how these countries and their respective populaces consume information. We map the general characteristics of the information environment in the region, highlighting trends that make the dissemination and consumption of information in the PICs particularly dynamic. We identify three factors that contribute to the dynamism of the regional information environment: disruptors, deficits, and domestic decisions. Collectively, these factors also create new opportunities for foreign actors to influence or shape the domestic information space in the PICs. This report concludes with recommendations for traditional partners and the PICs to support the positive evolution of the information environment.
