The public transport market has notice a clear increase in the mobility volume, since people’s tendency is to move to more complex and diverse daily trips. As a result, the demand of an extensive, intensive, flexible and integrated public transport system is becoming one of the main priorities for city halls and transport authorities. New flexible systems such as public bike sharing (PBS) appeared in many European cities as a solution to provide a complementary mode to cover last-step of trips inside congested areas. Between 2001 and 2011, above 400 schemes were implemented in the west part of Europe (European Commission, 2011). One of the keys of its success is its proper integration with other modes, which can be differentia ted in three different levels: • Physical integration, which responds to allocation of stations near each other to make easier transfers. • Integrated information, providing information about possible transfers between modes • Fare integration, referred to provide a global fare system for different modes. This project aims to study the particular case of Bicing, the large public bike sharing scheme launched in Barcelona in 2007. Defined as flexible, practical and sustainable way to travel, Bicing is known as one of the most popular schemes in Europe. The system is properly integrated with the other modes operating in the city, since its stations are located close to principal hubs in the city and clear information about the scheme is provided. However, no fare integration has been achieved, since the access to the bike sharing is only available to residents and through an electronical card. As a main point of this project, the possibility to fare integrate Bicing under the already consolidated fare integrated system (STI) in Barcelona will be studied. The main motivation is the recently forecast to launch an electronical card called T-Mobilitat that will supply the existing transport tickets in Barcelona, and could delete all access barriers with Bicing. The document will be separated in three parts, in order to firstly organize all available data and as a result of its analysis, study the possibility of fare integrate the scheme. On the one hand, Bicing data will be collected in order to analyze its demand, supply and financial patterns. On the other hand, the already consolidated performance of the STI system will be analysed, so its financial characteristics can be understood and particularized for each of the integrated modes. As a result, the potential demand and the range of competitiveness of Bicing scheme will be deduced as well as the possibility or not to integrate the scheme into the STI. The program is sponsored by the Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP), funded by the Federal Transit Administration, and managed by the Eno Transportation Foundation. The subject for the 2005 Fall Study Mission was Innovative Techniques in Planning and Finance of Public Transportation Projects. The mission studied systems in Barcelona, Spain; Copenhagen, Denmark; Shanghai, China; and Osaka, Japan. As a participant, the author had the opportunity to meet with the managers for the different systems and learn and document the experience. This paper presents a more detailed insight on the author’s assigned studied systems in Barcelona, the way it has been integrated to become an effective transit system, its financial model, the lessons learned and its possible applications in Puerto Rico and elsewhere. The public bicycle schemes are also known as bicycle sharing systems, community bicycling schemes etc., The main idea of a public bicycle system is that the user need not own a bicycle but still gain the advantages of bicycling by renting a bicycle provided by the scheme for a nominal fee or for free of charge (as in some cities). Most of these schemes enable people to realize one way trips, because the users needn’t to return the bicycles to the origin, which will avoid unnecessary travel. Public bicycle schemes provide not only convenience for trips in the communities, they can also be a good addition to the public transport system. Encouraging public bike systems have shown that there can be numerous short that could be made by a bicycle instead of using motorised modes. Public bike schemes also encourage creative designs in bikes and also in the operational mechanisms. The current document is one of the several efforts of GTZ-Sustainable Urban Transport Project to bring to the policymakers an easy to access list of available material on Public Bike Schemes (PBS) which can be used in their everyday work. The document aims to list out some influential and informative resources that highlight the importance of PBS in cities and how the existing situation could be improved.

    2007 IN THE MTA Ten years after the creation of the MTA, this 2007 Report contains many elements of enormous importance and individuality that indicate the order of priorities of the Government of the Gene- ralitat and all associated administrative bodies. In the first place, a review of the 2001-2010 Infrastructure Management Plan (IMP), showed the urgent need for the already begun revision and update. The key financial data is that in 2007, there has been a considerable excess, in absolute terms, of the amount of money allo- cated for the whole period of duration of the IMP. More money, but nevertheless, not yet all the improvement work, and some of this pending work still under discussion or modification. This is the case of Metro line 12. The agreement has been to replace it by extensions to some lines and the construction of a new Cornellà-Castelldefels railway line. It is therefore urgent to have a revised IMP that adapts to this new reality. JOAQuim NADAL I FarrEraS The physical translation of the work included in the IMP is now more than evident in the Councillor for Territorial Policy follow-up map. The map is very spectacular and shows the immensity of the process of mo- and Public Works and President of the MTA dernisation, change and adaptation of accesses of the whole public transport network of the metropolitan region. The fact that this enormous volume of work still has few obvious repercus- sions is a problem that must be resolved.
