Dear Parents and Carers, A few quick reminders: Water fun day for P-Yr 2 students On Tuesday 10 March students in Preschool to Year 2 who are not attending the school swimming carnival will be involved in a Water Fun Day at school. Activities will start at 12:00 pm and parents and carers are welcome to come and join us. Students will be involved in a number of fun activities involving water such as, sponge relays, water exploration and team games. Please send a change of clothes (including underwear), a towel and a plastic bag to put wet swimmers in. The Joeys group will participate in activities later in the week. Swimming Carnival for 8yr-13yr old students Our School Swimming carnival is this Tuesday at the Lakeside Leisure Centre, Tuggeranong. We are looking forward to seeing our students displaying ‘house spirit’ cheering each other on. In order to comply with ACT Government Education and Training procedures this is a structured event with a mixture of competitive races, novelty events and house relays. There will be an alternative program at school for non-participants. School Car Parking safety reminders: Traffic Operations will be visiting school zones – please check our safe places designated for school parking, pick up and drop off. Please remember areas where parking is not permitted: in a “No Stopping” zone - “No Stopping” means a vehicle may NOT stop or park on the street for any purpose in a “No Parking” zone, stopping is permitted. Where signs indicate “No Parking”, a vehicle may stop to pick up or set down passengers and must drive on within two minutes of stopping. Barnardos Mountain Trails Camp Barnardos has been in Canberra for nearly 40 years, working for the welfare of children, young people and their families in the ACT. Barnardos have purchased a camp program through Mountain Trails Adventure School. The camp runs one weekend per month over the whole year. Children partake in activities such as caving, horse-riding, abseiling, rock climbing and bush walking. The aim of the camp is to provide support in the form of respite care to families at times of stress and risk of family breakdown. The “campers” are children/young people aged from 9 to 16 years, who reside in the Canberra area and who live in families on a low income. I am very pleased to be able to offer Taekwondo classes at Duffy Primary School at lunch time. The Taekwondo lunch club is a 50 minute martial art and physical activity class for Wanniassa Hills Primary School children from Kindergarten to Year 6. United Taekwondo, originally a Korean self-defence martial art, is safe for all children and does not teach them to hurt others… ever. Students have the opportunity to learn confidence, respect, self defence, strength, flexibility and coordination. They will do partner empathy exercises and even experience basic meditation! All students are trained under the auspice that Taekwondo is only to be practiced in organised or in a safe place at home. Not on other students or siblings!!! Class details are: Day: Thursdays Time: 11.10am – 11.50am Cost: $60 for 8 weeks of training (usually $80 for the full 10 week term) If your child is interested in this club you will need to: reserve your child’s place by emailing your child’s details to me at [email protected] 4 Canberra celebrates with a jam-packed birthday weekend Enlighten Enlighten’s festive vibe and free entertainment continues in the Parliamentary Triangle this weekend. On Saturday Spanish act Voala Station will make their Australian debut in John Dunmore Lang Place with an unmissable aerial performance.     Section C C.1 Risk Management and Internal Audit Internal Audit The Directorate’s Audit Committee oversees, on behalf of the Director-General, the Directorate’s governance, risk, compliance and internal control environments, and provides assurance as to their effectiveness. The Committee acts independently of management. The EDD Audit Committee Charter was reviewed and agreed (with only minor amendments) in November 2012. There were no changes to the membership of the Audit Committee during the financial year. Annual and forward audit programs are guided by governance, risk and compliance programs and are supported by an Audit Recommendations Implementation Register. The Directorate’s three-year internal audit program was agreed by the Senior Executive Committee and by the Audit Committee in November 2012, with the program including a balance of compliance and performance audits across the three years. A significant matter of interest for the EDD Audit Committee during this reporting year was the implementation of recommendations identified by the Auditor-General during the 2011-12 financial audit, to improve the control framework in place within the Directorate. By the end of the 2012-13 reporting year the majority of recommendations had been addressed and completed. The Audit Committee specifically congratulated the relevant areas of the Directorate on their work in documenting and improving governance and control processes. Four internal audits were completed during the reporting year, with a further three internal audits undertaken but not yet complete at the end of the year. The internal audits completed and presented to the EDD Audit Committee during the 2012-13 reporting year were: • Follow Up Audit – Territory Venues and Events – November 2012 • Review of credit card usage – May 2013 • Review of the payment of invoices – May 2013 • Review of salary acquittal reports – June 2013 The EDD Audit Committee met on six occasions during 2012-13.

    ACT Government 2003-2004 BUDGET BUDGET CONTINUES TO SUPPORT THE SPORTING CAPITAL The 2003-04 ACT Budget continues to support Canberra as Australia’s sporting capital by upgrading sporting facilities and providing support for major sporting events and women’s elite sport, Sports Minister Ted Quinlan said. “We are providing $850,000 for upgrading the National Hockey Centre’s hockey field to international standard, with the new field to be of the wet synthetic type. This funding will also support improvements to drainage, lighting and fencing work at the Hockey Centre,” he said. “We have also allocated $1 million for the upgrade program of sportsgrounds, pools and recreation facilities. “Change rooms will be built at O’Connor Enclosed Oval and at Conder playing fields. The pavilions at Deakin West and Woden Park Athletics Field will be refurbished. “We are installing new training lights at Gordon playing fields and Isabella Plains oval and carrying out improvements to Dickson pool, such as landscaping, shade screens, seating and regrouting of the pool.” Mr Quinlan said the budget maintains the Government’s commitment to hosting major sporting events by providing additional funds for its agreement with the Australian Football League. “We are providing $250,000 a year for the next three years for staging four AFL matches at Manuka Oval each year. Under our agreement, the AFL will promote football at junior and school-age level in the ACT and will also make reasonable endeavours to provide live broadcasts of the ACT matches into other states,” he said. Funding for the Sport and Recreation Grant Program has been increased in line with CPI, bringing it to $2,518 425 next financial year.

The league will feature Australia’s best hockey players competing in Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, Hobart, Brisbane and Sydney. The cream of Australian hockey will be fighting for a place on the podium in the inaugural Hockey One League from Sunday the 29th of September, according to Hockey One League Interim General manager, Tony Dodemaide. The Adelaide Fire Coaches & Squads (Names to be released soon) are rearing to get going for their 1st game in Sydney on the 29th of September. Then extremely excited to host their 1st home game here at the State Hockey Centre on the 13th of October. It was be a full house, so be sure to sign up for your memberships as soon as they are live, team membership packages will be available via Ticketek as from this Thursday July 11th. According to Hockey SA CEO Peter Churack “I am very excited that Hockey SA is to be part of the new national hockey competition the Hockey One League with our teams the Adelaide Fire. The women will feature 4 players who have represented the Hockeyroos over the last 12 months and the men’s who will build on their competitive performance in last year’s national competition. The new format promotes fast and aggressive hockey rewarding field goals and minimising slow play.

Staff have been warm and open and have given me a clear message that they care about their students and this school and are keen to work collaboratively to support school improvement. Parents and carers have contacted me and shared their strong sense of confidence in our school and have offered their support. I could not feel more fortunate to be the Principal of this school. A little about me I have recently been working as Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Canberra, teaching in undergraduate and post-graduate education units, convening the Master of Education degree and establishing the UC Affiliated Schools Partnership. I have been the Principal of Campbell High and Dickson College as well as holding leadership roles in the directorate. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in English and Politics (UNSW@ADFA), a Graduate Diploma in Secondary Education (UC), a Master of Education in Curriculum (DEAKIN) and a Graduate Certificate in Public Policy (ANU).
