Muslims believe that Allah (Arabic word for God) revealed their holy book, the Qur’an, to Muhammad through the angel Gabriel. They view their religion as the original faith created by God through Adam and believe Judaism and Christianity are distortions of that original faith. To Muslims, Islam is the only true religion. The noun islām is formed from the verb aslama, a derivation of this root which means “to accept, surrender, or submit.” Islam effectively means submission to and acceptance of Allah. Allah is not the loving, relational God of the Bible, but one who rules with an iron fist. Islam is not just a religion; it is a political system. It encompasses Muslim politics, culture, and relationships. Islam, through Shari’a law, dictates everything in Muslims’ lives, from their social relationships and business ethics to their politics. A detailed set of laws guides their every action. PRIMARY BELIEFS Islam includes many practices, although at the root are the Five Pillars of Islam which all Muslims must follow: 1. Declaration of Faith (the shahada) Muslims believe that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. 2. More specifically, this article will consider the meaning and function of 20:1–6 within Revelation as it relates to the contemporary debate about whether this section is best understood within a premillennial or amillennial framework. Jihad term often used for things that are destructive by western scholars and society. For them, jihad is synonymous with terrorism. The similarization of the word Jihad with the word terrorism in the Western perception is strongly reinforced by a series of terror committed by Muslims in the name of jihad. These acts have been increasingly affecting the interpretation of the word jihad in a negative way although in reality that is not the case in a contemporary context. Jihad in contemporary understanding is not just a war against visible enemies but also a war against the devil and carnality. Even a war against visible enemies that are written in classical fiqh books has now replaced by a contemporary interpretation of jihad against the enemies, as was done by Dr. ZakirNaik. Pregill Elon University, Elon, NC [email protected] In memory of Thomas Sizgorich ABSTR A CT The quranic retelling of the Golden Calf story found at 2:51–54 contains a unique allusion to what is arguably one of the most important elements in the biblical precursor in Exodus, the so-called Levitical election. This paper will explore the interpretation of Moses’ puzzling command to the Israelite idolaters to “slay yourselves” in early and classical tafsīr. I will argue that the subtle changes in Muslim exegetes’ understanding of this aspect of the episode reflect important developments in early Islamic soci- ety, in particular the emergence of the accommodationist political ideol- ogy that would become one of the defining features of classical Sunnism.
