So we decided, for the man who has given so much, it was time to give something back. We had fun, we had food, we had laughter, we had drink, we had songs, we had singing, we had lavish surroundings, we had cake, we had a trip down memory lane and we circumnavigated the globe in an audio-visual spectacle of happy birthday messages from almost every continent on the planet. We haven’t even mentioned the unique renditions (utter dismantling) of classics like ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart’ and ‘New York, New York’… Check out the photos and see if you can guess who was Elton and who was Kiki ! Huge thanks must go to the Splash Jungle resort in Mai Khao for providing the venue (for free!) and our local Old Mai Khao restaurant for putting on such a fantastic spread of food on a tight budget. Contributions from managers and board members enabled us to provide the food and a few drinks for the 100 attendees and the use of a 7m X 5m giant screen on which to play music and show birthday videos added further impact to the already stirring presentation. He simply never fits the archetype: his best album, both Gin terms of artistic and commercial success, The Pleasure Principle (1979), has no guitars on it; his career was brief; and he retired at his peak. Therefore, he has received little critical attention; the only book-length analysis of his work is a slim volume from Paul Sutton (2018), who strains to fit him somehow into the rock canon. With few signposts at hand—and his own open refusal to be a star—writing about Numan is admittedly a challenge. In fact, Numan is a good test case for questioning the traditional belief in the authenticity of individual artistic genius.
