Sounds of War and Peace: Soundscapes of European Cities in 1945
10 This book vividly evokes for the reader the sound world of a number of Eu- Renata Tańczuk / Sławomir Wieczorek (eds.) ropean cities in the last year of the Second World War. It allows the reader to “hear” elements of the soundscapes of Amsterdam, Dortmund, Lwów/Lviv, Warsaw and Breslau/Wrocław that are bound up with the traumatising experi- ences of violence, threats and death. Exploiting to the full methodologies and research tools developed in the fields of sound and soundscape studies, the Sounds of War and Peace authors analyse their reflections on autobiographical texts and art. The studies demonstrate the role urban sounds played in the inhabitants’ forging a sense of 1945 Soundscapes of European Cities in 1945 identity as they adapted to new living conditions. The chapters also shed light on the ideological forces at work in the creation of urban sound space. Sounds of War and Peace. Bachrach – David S. Bachrach NITHARD AS A MILITARY HISTORIAN OF THE CAROLINGIAN EMPIRE, C 833–843 Introduction Despite the substantially greater volume of sources that provide information about the military affairs of the ninth century as compared to the eighth, the lion’s share of scholarly attention concerning Carolingian military history has been devoted to the reign of Charlemagne, particularly before his imperial coronation in 800, rather than to his descendants1. Indeed, much of the basic work on the sources, that is required to establish how they can be used to answer questions about military matters in the period after Charlemagne, remains to be done. An unfortunate side-effect of this rel- ative neglect of military affairs as well as source criticism for the ninth century has been considerable confusion about the nature and conduct of war in this period2. -
Master Thesis Multinational Villages in the Euroregion Rhine-Waal
Master Thesis Maarten Goossens S4615646 Radboud University Nijmegen Human Geography: Conflicts, Territories and Identities June 2019 Multinational villages in the Euroregion Rhine-Waal Supervised by: Martin van der Velde And the thing called Europe has become a patchwork of colourful places, and everyone is a stranger as soon as they stick their nose out of their village. There are more strangers than inhabitants in this God blessed continent... Everyone considers their business to be the most important one and no one is planning to sacrifice anything. First of all, to start with, we draw a demarcation line. We split up. We need a boundary. Because we are all for ourselves. But an earth bends under these foolish people, a soil under them and a heaven above them. The borders run criss-cross Europe. In the long term, however, no one can separate people - not borders and not soldiers - if they just don't want to. (Kurt Tuchulsky alias Peter Panter, Berliner Volkszeitung, 27-06-1920) ii Preface The last few months I crossed the Dutch-German border on a daily basis. I did so in a bus, filled with school children speaking Dutch one moment, German the other as if it were one and the same language for them. Often with international students and other people from all over the world making their way from the one side of the border to the other. On my daily trip from Nijmegen to Kleve I sometimes forgot where I was, or fell asleep, and then suddenly noticed I already had crossed the border. -

Orthodox Oblates of St. Benedict
September 2015 Newsletter !1 ORTHODOX OBLATES OF ST. BENEDICT From the Holy Rule of St. Benedict (Chapter XIX) We believe that God is present everywhere and that the eyes of the Lord behold the good and the bad in every place (cf Prov 15:3). Let us firmly believe this, especially when we take part in the Work of God. Let us, therefore, always be mindful of what the Prophet saith, "Serve ye the Lord with fear" (Ps 2:11). And again, "Sing ye wisely" (Ps 46[47]:8). And, "I will sing praise to Thee in the sight of the angels" (Ps 137[138]:1). Therefore, let us consider how it becometh us to behave in the sight of God and His angels, and let us so stand to sing, that our mind may be in harmony with our voice. Vade retro Satana! Nunquam suade mihi vana! + Sunt mala quae libas. Ipse venena bibas! September 2015 Newsletter !2 Luke 18: 1-14 And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith. -
Auto En Motor Route ±90 Km Viewpoint Posbank
