Floyd, Ph.D. Strategic Plan 2014-2019 Introduction The 2014-19 strategic plan builds on the previous five-year plan, recognizing the core values and broad mission of Washington State University. Goals and strategies were developed to achieve significant progress toward WSU’s aspiration of becoming one of the nation’s leading land-grant universities, preeminent in research and discovery, teaching, and engagement. The plan emphasizes the institution’s unique role as an accessible, approachable research institution that provides opportunities to an especially broad array of students while serving Washington state’s broad portfolio of social and economic needs. While providing exceptional leadership in traditional land-grant disciplines, Washington State University adds value as an integrative partner for problem solving due to its innovative focus on applications and its breadth of program excellence. The plan explicitly recognizes the dramatic changes in public funding that have occurred over the duration of the previous strategic plan, along with the need for greater institutional nimbleness, openness, and entrepreneurial activity that diversifies the University’s funding portfolio. In addition, the plan reaffirms WSU’s land-grant mission by focusing greater attention system-wide on increasing access to educational opportunity, responding to the needs of Washington state through research, instruction, and outreach, and contributing to economic development and public policy. It explores the creative tension and dynamic relation between the two, how developments in science challenge Christian understanding and how theology can respond intelligibly to these challenges. In particular, the course focuses on the natural sciences' quests for origins: the quest for the beginning of the universe in cosmology, the quest for the beginning of the human species in evolution, and the quest for the beginning of an individual in genetic engineering. The theological implications of these quests are examined. Diverse and sometimes conflicting theological responses are considered. The quests for the beginning (in the past) are brought into proper perspective with a study on the concept of eschatology, the unique Christian promise of the end (in the future). The course concludes with a comparison of the epistemological principles in science and in theology and an exploration of the nature of theological science. Course Goals 1) To introduce students to ways of relating science and religion. 2) To help students understand the concepts of the scientific quests for the origins of the universe, homo sapiens and the individual selfhood. 3) To explore the relevant concepts and doctrines in Christian theology that have a direct bearing on the scientific quests for origins. -

Abstract The Ionospheric Connections Explorer (ICON) payload includes an Ion velocity Meter (IVM) to provide measurements of the ion drift motions, density, temperature and a major ion composition. The IVM will derive these parameters utilizing two sensors, a retarding potential analyzer (RPA) and an ion drift meter (IDM) that have a robust and successful flight heritage. The IVM described here incorporates the most sensitive device that has been fielded to date. It will be used in conjunction with measurements from the other ICON instruments to uncover the important connections between the dynamics of the neutral atmosphere and the ionosphere through the generation of dynamo currents perpendicular to the magnetic field and collisional forces parallel to the magnetic field. DRAFTHere the configuration and operation of the instrument is described as well as a description of the data that it is expected to return. 1 1. Introduction The Ionospheric Connections Explorer (ICON) mission is poised to discover fundamental connections between the dynamics of the neutral atmosphere at altitudes between 100 km and 300 km and the charged particle motion, which is tied to the magnetic field that threads the entire region. A comprehensive description of the links between the charged and neutral species will be revealed with a unique combination of remote measurements of the plasma and neutral density and the neutral winds and in-situ measurements of the plasma density and plasma drift. -

Zimmermann 2 NASA Advisory Council Science Committee Meeting, March 6-7, 2012 March 6, 2012 Welcome and Introduction Dr. Wesley Huntress, Chair for the NASA Advisory Council (NAC) Science Committee (SC) opened the meeting, welcoming the new Acting Chair for the Heliophysics Subcommittee (HPS) Robert McPherron, and William McKinnon representing the Planetary Science Subcommittee (PSS). He welcomed Dr. Barbara Giles as the newly named as Director of the Heliophysics Division (HPD). Other changes include a newly appointed Chair for the NAC, Dr. Steven Squyres, an exceptional planetary scientist, and Chair of the Steering Committee for the National Research Council’s 2011 Planetary Science Decadal Survey. Dr. John Grunsfeld has taken the place of Dr. Edward Weiler as Associate Administrator (AA) of the Science Mission Directorate (SMD). Dr. Grunsfeld is an astrophysicist and astronaut with great experience and knowledge in human spaceflight and robotic exploration. Noting that Dr. Weiler had retired abruptly in response to the FY13 budget, Dr. Huntress expressed regret at the loss of an effective AA, but was pleased to see Dr. Grunsfeld take the new position. FY96 NCAR ASR Highlights 1996 ASR Highlights Highlights of NCAR's FY96 Achievements These are the most significant highlights from each NCAR division and program. Atmospheric Chemistry Division Highlights data missing Atmospheric Technology Division Highlights AVAPS/GPS Dropsonde System The development of the advanced Airborne Vertical Atmospheric Profiling System (AVAPS)/GPS Dropsonde System was close to completion at the end of FY 96. This work has been supported by NOAA and the Deutsche Forschungsanstalt fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR, Germany). AVAPS has now progressed to the point where all the NOAA data systems (two four-channel systems plus spares for the NOAA G-IV aircraft and two four-channel systems plus spares for the NOAA P-3 aircraft) have been delivered, and the initial flight testing has been completed. Both high-level (45,000-foot-altitude) and low-level (22,000-foot-altitude) drop tests have been completed, including intercomparison tests in which sondes were dropped from both the G-IV and the P-3s. Data taken by the AVAPS system on the G-IV and by a second system installed in a leased Lear 36 aircraft are expected to play a key role in the Fronts and Atlantic Storm Tracks Experiment (FASTEX), scheduled for early 1997. The DLR four-channel AVAPS system is currently being built and will be installed on the DLR Falcon aircraft in March 1997. NCAR has transferred the technology to the public sector by licensing a commercial firm (Vaisala, Inc.) to build future GPS sondes and data systems. This effort is led by Hal Cole and Terry Hock.
