Knott Lanes and ood rk hamlets h ave been taken from the ancient hamlet of P ark a - . The considerable time name of Knott Lanes , as applied i to a division , is anc ent ; but , as used for a village or ham n. So : let , moder it is With Audenshaw the division is but v of considerable antiquity , the illage or hamlet of that name is comparatively mode rn . The hamlets or villages of Audenshaw and Hooley- Hill are portions of the ancient haml e t of Shepley . The TO W N and B OR OU GH of Ashton -under-Lyne are situated within the division of the town .     Public Agenda Item No. 8(i) DERBYSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL CABINET 31 January 2017 Report of the Strategic Director – Economy, Transport and Communities TRANS-PENNINE HIGHWAY PROJECTS (HIGHWAYS, TRANSPORT AND INFRASTRUCTURE) (1) Purpose of Report To update Cabinet on a number of projects relating to highway links across the South Pennines and to recommend a County Council policy statement on these. (2) Information and Analysis There are currently a number of inter- related pieces of work being undertaken on existing and potential roads across the South Pennines. Essentially, these are a combination of Highways England’s management and maintenance programmes for the strategic road network and priorities for highways improvement emerging from Transport for the North (TfN), which is the sub-national transport body for the north of England. Cabinet will be aware that, in terms of governance, Derbyshire sits within the equivalent Midlands Connect sub-national transport body, but there are clearly strong relationships between the two entities in relation to economic geography and travel. Worthy of note is the considerable amount of work underway relating to connections between Manchester and Sheffield, which inevitably pass through Derbyshire. The key current areas of work on trans-Pennine roads are: • The Mottram Bypass and A57(T) to A57 Link Road The Road Investment Strategy (RIS) which sets out the work of Highways England for the period up to the year 2020-21 includes major schemes which are expected to begin construction during the RIS period. The Mottram Bypass would carry the Trunk Road around the village of Mottram-in-Longdendale (in Tameside) and provide a link between this and the A57 Principal Road near Woolley Bridge in Derbyshire.

To supplement and correct the article from the "Manx Note Book," printed at No . 297, let me offer the following brief notes :- First as to the date of the Heywood char- ter, I would refer the reader to the note een- tribu,ted to this column by Dr. Hunt, a few months--ago . The assertion that "Peter Hey- wood, who died in 1657, was sixteenth in descent from Piers, living 1164," is not, I think, strictly correct, the pedigree from which that statement is taken being not quite ecmplete . Most of the sons and daughters of Gover- nor Heywood were buried, married, and bap- tised in Kirk Malew, and their names entered in the parish registers . During a recent stay at the Isle of Man, I viuited this old church . My visit was really a pilgrimage . Not an affectionate pilgrimage, not a religious pil- grimage, merely a pilgrimage of idle curiosity! I had seen this place mentioned so often in the Heywood pedigree that I thought I would like to see it. After looking up the locality on the map, I started off one fine morning in early June-fine, for the bad weather of that awful month had not yet commenced . Leav- ing Peel, changing trains at Douglas, and dis- mounting at - Ballasalla was the first part of my journey . Near Ballasalla stands Rushen Abbey, now only a few bare ruins, a tower, a Crypt, and a remnant of the -walls .
