LucasArts and the Design of Successful Adventure Games: The True Secret of Monkey Island by Cameron Warren 5056794 for STS 145 Winter 2003 March 18, 2003 2 The history of computer adventure gaming is a long one, dating back to the first visits of Will Crowther to the Mammoth Caves back in the 1960s and 1970s (Jerz). How then did a wannabe pirate with a preposterous name manage to hijack the original computer game genre, starring in some of the most memorable adventures ever to grace the personal computer? Is it the yearning of game players to participate in swashbuckling adventures? The allure of life as a pirate? A craving to be on the high seas? Strangely enough, the Monkey Island series of games by LucasArts satisfies none of these desires; it manages to keep the attention of gamers through an admirable mix of humorous dialogue and inventive puzzles. The strength of this formula has allowed the Monkey Island series, along with the other varied adventure game offerings from LucasArts, to remain a viable alternative in a computer game marketplace increasingly filled with big- budget first-person shooters and real-time strategy games. Indeed, the LucasArts adventure games are the last stronghold of adventure gaming in America. What has allowed LucasArts to create games that continue to be successful in a genre that has floundered so much in recent years? The solution to this problem is found through examining the history of Monkey Island. LucasArts’ secret to success is the combination of tradition and evolution. With each successive title, Monkey Island has made significant strides in technology, while at the same time staying true to a basic gameplay formula. -

Complete List of Officers and Men Ashton Pals Battalion The Cheshire Reporter August 15 th 1914 An Historic Number On page 6 of this issue we give a complete list of the names of the officers and men of the Ashton Battalion Territorials. At such a time the list of names must be of supreme interest to the people of Ashton and district as there is scarcely a family that has not a representative or friend in the Territorials. This is the first time in history the Territorials have been called up on active service and the public interest in this fine body of citizen soldiers has been much deepened by the announcement made during the week that no less than 858 of the Territorials have in response to an invitation from the War Office volunteered for service abroad. It was not known up to yesterday (Friday) when they would be called upon to leave the town, but a communication is expected from the War Office at any moment. The men are standing by in readiness for the call. They are full of enthusiasm and are eager to go wherever they should be called. It is stated that they may be asked to go to Malta, Gibraltar or Egypt. For this reason the publication of the names of the whole of the officers and men of the battalion constitutes this issue of the “Reporter” an historic number. This list has never previously been given anywhere. It should therefore be kept by everyone and will no doubt be cherished in families for many generations showing as it will the noble response made by their ancestors when, England and all Europe was involved in the greatest peril the human race has ever known. -

A NONCONFORMIST MISSIONARY JOURNEY TO LANCASHIRE AND CHESHIRE IN JULY 1672 B. Cattle, M.A., Ph.D., F.S.A. and M.J. Crossley Evans, B.A., F.G.S. The Revd Henry Maurice (c. 1636-1682)' was born at Methlan in the Llyn peninsula, into a Caernarvonshire family of some substance, bound up with Church and State. He was successively at Jesus College, Oxford (1652), Puri tan curate of Llannor and Deneio (1658), in which parish lay the town of Pwllheli, and incumbent of Meyllteyrn (1661). When he took to preaching, popular applause made him, on his own admission, 'a vain-glorious fellow', and for some time he led a loose, immoral life, and was heavily in debt. On 20 March, 1662, he conformed to the Act of Uniformity as Vicar of Bromfield, Salop, and on 3 June, 1668, moved to a far richer living as Rector of Church Stretton; but whilst here, having spent his childhood and youth in 'vanity', he was suddenly roused 'to a great solicitude about his everlas ting state' by the ravages of malignant fever in the parish. He felt that he could not rest content until he had aban doned his living and had ceased to conform. He tried to keep this to himself, but his wife sensed his worry and, catching him alone, insisted on hearing everything; after which, since only his concern for his family restrained him, she urged him to go ahead, saying that she utterly trusted in God. Thus encouraged, he confided in 'Brother' Thomas Quarrell, an itinerant Congregational preacher in Whit- church (Salop), Glamorgan and Monmouth, who advised him to 'count the cost before he entered upon a suffering state'; but Maurice answered that if he remained Rector 'his conscience would fly in his face'. -
War and the Cotton Famine, 1861-65
THE DIARY OF JAMES GARNETT OF LOW MOOR, CLITHEROE, 1858-65: PART 2 THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR AND THE COTTON FAMINE, 1861-65 BY OWEN ASHMORE, M.A. 1 AMES GARNETTS DIARY for the period of the cotton Jfamine contains a similar range of information to that for the earlier years: comments on the weather, local events, family and personal interests and activities, national and international affairs, developments at the mill, the state of trade in the cotton industry, other business interests of the Garnett family. There is, however, a particular emphasis on the effects of the war in America and the Diary regularly records the news from there, the state of raw cotton supply, with details of stocks imported from different parts of the world, the state of the markets for yarn and cloth. It is possible to learn from it a great deal about how one Lancashire firm managed during this difficult period. As in the earlier years there is the added interest of being able to compare what Garnett wrote, at least for part of the time, v/ith the comments of John O'Neil (John Ward), the Low Moor weaver, portions of whose Diary have also survived.2 Un fortunately the latter gave up making entries on 8 June 1862 and did not resume until 10 April 1864, so that there is a gap when the effects of the cotton famine were about at their worst. A reminder of the Garnett family situation may be helpful. At the beginning of 1861 the firm was in the hands of Thomas Garnett, aged 62, and his two sons: William, born in 1825, and James, the diarist, born in 1828.
