MOTTRAM-IN-

Is an extensive parish comprising eight townships-namely, 1\'Iottram, Godley, , , 1\iatley, Newton, Stayley and , which contain aggregately 26,260 statute acres of land, and which bore a population in 1801 amounting to 6,234; in 1831 to 15,53(1; in 1841 to 21,215, and according to the census of 1851 it conta.ined 23,765 souls. The parish which comprehends a bleak and dreary promontory, extending to the borders of Yorkshire, is bounded on its northern side by the river Tame, and on the southern side it is washed by the Etherow, which separates it from . A large tract of moor land, called "Feather-bed Moss," and abounding with grouse, stretches to the extreme eastern point of the county, which is here separated from Yorkshire by the Salters' Brook, where the counties of Chester, Derby, and York converge. MoTTRAM village, which stands on an eminence in the Dale, is situated in the hundred of Macclesfield, diocese and county of Chester, about 7-! miles N. N. E. from Stockport, 10 E. by s. from Manchester, 29 w. from Sheffield, and about a mile from the line of the Manchester, Shef­ field, and Lincolnshire Railway, which crosses the Etherow at Dinting Vale by a lofty viaduct of sixteen arches. The township contains about 1,000 acres of land, and has increased its popu­ lation from 984 in 1801, to 3,199 in 1851.
