I would seek the support of the Council to have this bridge examined for safety and indeed to look at the provision of a footbridge. Perhaps a relevant officer from the Council might also have a view and if we can also garner the support of the Council it will help the students who raised the issue and will also strengthen the concept that all citizens, regardless of age can seek support from their government central or local. I visited the area along with my PA and attach herewith photographs taken of the bridge in the short time of my visit which was approximately at 11:00am. You will note the clearance on the bridge — imagine a child attempting to cross. The pupils have to walk across the bridge to get to the bus stop at the other side where their school bus then collects them and vice versa in the afternoon on returning from school. One of the pupils asked “why is there no foot bridge?” This reminds me of King James’ Bridge in Omagh where despite traffic lights on a similar bridge, a separate foot bridge is provided. I have asked PSNI to check this bridge from a road safety point of view and indeed the Education Authority to do a road safety assessment for children travelling to school. My PA and I visited the site at around 11:00am and I enclose copies of relevant photographs taken at that time — I am sure the image at school travel time would be horrendous. Can you please advise me as to when route was last checked by the WELB or the EA from a safety point of view as it is evident from the enclosed photographs that there is little to no clearance to allow for pedestrians on the bridge whilst vehicles are also using it. In the event that there has not been a recent assessment, I would request that urgent action is taken to complete one to further my request for a foot bridge for school children.
