The vines are all ungrafted and are on average of 13 years old. Lateharvest-style wines from arid Mendoza are incredibly rare due to the lack of moisture and botrytis at harvest time, and RED dessert wines are almost unheard of. Fortunately, Susana has created a sweet, ripe Malbec dessert wine that is both incredibly balanced and totally seductive. Lush and brimming over with ripe black cherry and plums, together with a touch of violets and spice making this an outstanding dessert wine. It is sweet, and 100% naturally so, not sticky or syrupy. This is indeed a virtuoso performance from the leading lady of the Argentine wine scene. This is an amazing thing. Once the keys to the winery and cellars were in his hands, Chester decided to hold back 15 barrels of the current blend of “Selected Tawny Port” a very old and exceptionally high quality fortified wine. These barrels were left to slowly mature and were only ‘topped up’ when necessary using only the same, carefully aged wine. The barrel shed that houses these old casks is also inhabited by hundreds of Daddy Long Leg spiders, who have kept a watchful eye over these precious gems for decades. The wine wasin superb condition and the spiders were doing such a great job protecting the barrels that Chester left them alone until just recently when he decided to bottle a small quantity for our pleasure. The wine is extremely old and exemplifies a classic Australian style. The colour is of an aged wine with a soft tan appearance. Amazing concentration." Comes boxed. The palate is well balanced with a vibrant, citrus-fresh entry. This Barsac is struck through with engaging, lovely orange peel and citrus lemon notes here that segue into a refined and tensile finish that leaves you wanting any sip." A rare thing, but a dessert wine at a reasonable price which retains balance and vitality and great with food. Gold Medal winner. Fortified Wine FINAL FINAL Madeira 42 % Reduction ONLY MADEIRA BARBEITO Ribeira Real Boal 20 Year Old Bottle 18%abv (fred) 1 £119.95 £50.00 £69.95 The Boal incorporates Tinta Negra from 1952, 1953 and 1954. Winemaker Ricardo Freitas explains there was no way he could have blended the ’52 in the 20 Year Old Verdelho. It was simply too concentrated and would have made it impossible for him to maintain the Verdelho’s youth – that tangy chutneyed fruit. The ’52 adds terrific woody resonance to this Boal – echoes of history which tickle the back palate most deliciously for an exceedingly long time. True to his word, Freitas has maintained Boal’s varietal character. It has a great concentration of singed, caramelised apple tatin fruit. With marvellous integration of flavours and consummate balance, this is an outstanding, truly exciting Madeira. Reduced to Clear Port 42 % ONLY 2004 QUINTA DE LA ROSA Vintage Port Bottle (rtc) 1 £59.95 £25.00 £34.95 The La Rosa 2004 has a great concentration of colour with wonderful complex aromas of black and red fruits. It is a full bodied, profound port with fresh clean flavours and mature tannins that give it a lively, long finish. As with most La Rosa ports, the 2004 is elegant, not aggressive, but yet full of concentrated, complex fruit with a slightly drier finish. Itwill age well but as it is surprisingly open, it can also be drunk now. Drink with digestives and cheese or with dark chocolates dishes - or just on its own. Reduced to Clear Port 25 % ONLY 2013 NIEPOORT Vintage Port Bioma, Vinha Velha Bottle/nc (rtc) 13 £79.95 £20.00 £59.95 By introducing another premium Vintage Port to the Niepoort Portfolio, Bioma “Vinha Velha” provides us with the opportunity to create, or re-create, a style of Vintage Port which not only respects the terroir, but also harks back to a golden age of Port. Bioma is a single Vintage Port, rather than a single Quinta. The “Vinha Velha” refers to the extraordinary age of the vines at Vinha da Pisca, mostly exceeding 80 years old. TASTING NOTES: Appearance of deep purple accompanied by a purple rim. With time, the wine has gained in colour, but on the aroma the exuberant youthful fruit, so evident after its first winter has closed down, but is very much still present on the palate with dark plums and blackberries with firm grainy tannins on the mid palate giving both structure and power to the wine leading to a grainy but not aggressive finish. This tangy, delicate Manzanilla sherry is a like breath of fresh seaair! A perfect aperitif or accompaniment to food.

This Bodega has been making their definitive style of Manzanilla since 1744, with its camomile and almond nose and complex, salty tang. "With its distinctive tang of salted almonds, Delgado Zuleta's La Goya Manzanilla is a moreish accompaniment to most tapas style dishes"

“From the oldest family-owned winery in the Jerez and Manzanilla districts comes a sherry named after a famous flamenco dancer, Aurora Jauffre, popularly known as “La Goya”. Like her, it claims to be intense, powerful yet elegant, which would seem to be a pretty accurate description of this manzanilla with its citrus notes and hints of almonds and olives. Manzanilla is Spanish for chamomile and there’s evidence of that too in this dry and quaffable sherry.” - John Clarke, Independent Reduced to Clear Spain - Sherry 24 % ONLY EMILIO LUSTAU East India Solera (Oloroso & Pedro Ximénez) Sweet Bottle 20% (rtc) 21 £20.95 £5.00 £15.95 A smooth and rich sweet sherry made of 80% Palomino and 20% Pedro Ximénez. It offers vibrant and well-integrated notes of maple syrup, brown sugar, shoe polish and raisin. Its ageing process recreates that of the wines which crossed the oceans in the 17th-century voyages, with each wine separately matured in its own solera for 12 years before blending and additional three years ageing.

ROBERT PARKER 94 points 'Readers looking for something weighty, sweet, and provocative should check out the non-vintage East India Solera. A blend of soleras averaging15 to 50 years of age, it boasts a dark amber color as well as a huge nose of melted toffee, caramel, figs, and prunes. It is produced from old, ungrafted Malbec grown at 2,035 meters altitude in Cafayate, in the province of Salta. The fruit is wild, and there are some lactic aromas intermixed with notes of red and black berries, and an earthy, truffle-like aroma, a whiff volatile perhaps. The various batches undergo malolactic fermentation in tank and barrel before 14 months’ maturation in a selection French oak barriques (20% new oak).

It is still young with some lactic notes and some aromas derived from the elevage (roasted coffee and dark chocolate), with terse black fruit and some beef blood overtones. It offers a deep ruby color with only a touch of amber at the edge, and a bouquet of complex aromas of truffles, cassis, licorice, and minerals. Much like the 1989, the bouquet is staggering, but the flavors are distinctly less profound. In the mouth, it is a much firmer, tougher, more obviously tannic wine than the 1989, with medium body and outstanding ripeness. A beautifully made 1988 that will last 20-25 years, its short finish keeps it from being sublime. The 1988 is somewhat reminiscent of the 1985, but with more tannin. " Drink Now

Based in the town of Vérac – between Pomerol and St Emilion, the domaine is certified organic and uses biodynamic techniques. The vineyard is run, as Vincent puts it, on “common sense and pre-pesticide practices”, with only natural treatments being used and complex co-planting of other species in between the vines to promote their health. In his custom-made winery, Vincent is moving toward the use of less oak and has been investing instead in 12-hectolitre Stockinger barrels and amphorae, vessels which he feels allow the wine to express its true character. The grapes are hand-harvested, only natural yeasts are used and Vincent does not use SO2, but instead favours a polyphenol liquid which is also organic. The wines show a lightness of touch, elegance and – in our view – a touch of mystery. This exciting new producer is challenging the traditional methods and wine styles associated with Bordeaux and is most certainly on the up.

"This exciting wine (90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc) from the Right Bank is made organically, with minimal use of oak and 10% aged in clay amphora. The resulting wine is smooth, exuding subtlety and elegance while also being generous and complex in flavour. The nose shows damson and bramble fruit, accompanied on the palate by some savoury notes. The most striking thing here is the wine’s lightness of touch, despite having reasonably firm tannins – it is amazingly approachable and easy to drink, ideally with lamb cutlets or côte de boeuf. In 1994, the year of his marriage, he began anegociant business under his own name and moved to Meursault as he could not expand his Santenay location. The negociant business has thrived, providing profits which have enabled Vincent to purchase further vineyards, including a proportion of the former Domaine Henri Clerc. His reds are of consistently high quality, with the emphasis being on purity of fruit and smooth, supple tannins. However, it is with whites that he really excels, producing a range of wines which are characterised by their depth of fruit and exquisite balance. These whites are extremely approachable when young but the top crus benefit from 4-5 years of bottle ageing. (Source: BBR)

THE WINE ADVOCATE Rating: 94 Drink Date: 2018 - 2035 Reviewed by: Monica Larner, Issue Date: 30th Jun 2017, Source: 231, The Wine Advocate This is the exciting new wine being presented by the Bruno Giacosa estate this year. The 2013 Barbaresco Rabajà comes from a half-hectare parcel purchased by Bruna Giacosa (Bruno's daughter) in 2013. Past incarnations of this wine were made with fruit that has now become part of the Asili cru under the revised map of vineyard crus. In other words, the name of the wine is technically the same, but the grapes used to make it are sourced from a different place starting with this vintage. This is a darkly enriched expression with ample power and muscle. The bouquet pours forth a beautiful array of dark fruit aromas with spice, smoke, laurel leaf and balsam herb. There's even a touch of aged cheddar or pecorino cheese that adds a spicy or piquant touch to the finish.

The Cariñena grape is known locally as Samsó and makes up 60 percent of the wine, the balance coming from Garnatxa (30 percent) with a little Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah to complete the picture. It fermented in oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in barriques for 15 months. Tasted next to the Terrasses from the same year, it doesn't have the finesse; it's not a powerful vintage and might be a little diluted, but it's full of flavor. 17,500 bottles were filled in February 2017." DECANTER MAGAZINE - 92 points - Grape Variety: 85% Garnacha, 13% Samsó (Carignan), 2% white grapes. Alvaro Palacios Gratallops Vi de Villa 2015 is a blend of 10 different sites. At 1,100 metres above sea level, the altitude serves to benefit the grapes with large diurnal variations which encourage even ripening and also helping retain their natural acidity. Organic methods are used to manage the vines utilising only natural fertilisers and some green pruning to further guarantee the quality of fruit prior to hand-harvesting. The grapes are vinified as naturally as possible with native yeasts and little other intervention. The wines are then aged in French oak and some in clay amphora to retain purity, but build complexity. Bright ruby todark purple in colour, it promises plenty of power. The nose is complex with powerful aromas of blackberry and blueberry with, rose, rosemary, violets and floral notes as well as a hint of spice. Lamb is probably the best match. Reduced to Clear Spain 24 % ONLY DECENDIENTES DE JOSE PALACIOS Villa de Corullon 2015 Bottle/nc (rtc) 14 £32.95 £8.00 £24.95 THE WINE ADVOCATE 95 points Drink Date: 2017 - 2028 Ricardo Pérez Palacios told me his favorite overall vintages for Bierzo are 2001, 2012 and possibly 2015, because he sees them as very complete years, even if 2015 didn'thave as perfect conditions as 2001 and 2012; the 2015 Corullón is a perfect example of that, a really pretty wine, open, where I see the similarities with 2012. They use many of the vineyards year after year, all of them around the village of Corullón, all planted with a field blend of varieties, and they have been increasing the percentage of white grapesfrom those vines that they include in the cuvée. In 2015, it can be almost 9%, mostly Palomino, and they feel it polishes that slight bitterness in the finish of the Mencía, reminiscent of green almonds. Of course, there are also other red grapes, like Alicante Bouschet, Gran Negro, Pan y Carne and Negreda, that might contribute to some 2% of the volume. 19,572 bottles, 720 half bottles, 450 magnums, 45 double magnums and 30 Jeroboams were filled between May 11th and 17th of 2017.

DECANTER MAGAZINE 89 points "The grapes for Alvaro Palacios Villa de Corullón 2015 come from vines between 50 and 100 years old, from six villages. Light, balanced freshness and crunchy, with an underlying stripe of minerality. Clean, chalky with good intensity." Corullón is the 'vino de pueblo' of the winery, made exclusively with the Mencía grape variety planted on slate soils and slopes on land surrounding the village. The vineyards are cultivated organically, with no pesticides or herbicides being used. The wines still maintain the fresh Atlantic character of the two previous vintages and seem to pick up both the aroma of grapes well-ripened in the sun and the freshness of the damp harvest. Delicate, very aromatic and with fluid, silky tannins. The nose of this Mourvèdre (known locally as Monastrell) is open, displaying vibrant bramble fruit and a subtle hint of spice, wild herb and hedgerow. It was Samuel’s first vinification of this vineyard within his own company. Matured in five-year-old barrels, it is more austere on the nose than the Bougros and demands more coaxing from the glass—it remains stern and steely. He was fascinated by the fact that in the mid-19th century, its wines rivalled those ofHermitage. By 1961, however, just one hectare remained. Éric has now put the appellation back on the map, and is the leading grower there. He now works his own vineyardsbiodynamically, and makes all his wines in a natural manner, only adding sulfur dioxide at bottling. From soils rich in limestone, Eric’s parcel of Roussanne is a southwest-facing clos, a true walled vineyard, with organically farmed vines averaging 25 years old. The fruit is hand-harvested and fermented as whole clusters with native yeasts in concrete tanks; the wine is also aged in concrete tank and bottled. Like his Syrah, the Roussanne is the original local clone and the old clone selection is labelled as Roussette to highlight this. Beautifully textured and elegant but with great energy. Michel has worked tirelessly to build relationships with small growers, over many years, encouraging best practice and sourcing, in the main, low production, old vine fruit. It is Michel’s and Bastien’s meticulous attention to detail, which makes these wines so special. This is such a chiselled, energic wine, brilliantly focused and linear.
