We are able to provide a whole range of wines by the glass by using preservation systems such as Le Verre de Vin and Coravin. We list the wines by grape variety giving you a chance to reflect or choose a wine that may not immediately come to mind when you are looking for a specific grape or style.

  • WSU Wants Wine Industry to Know It Can Help by Mai Hoang Maihoang
WSU Wants Wine Industry to Know it Can Help By Mai Hoang [email protected] Mar 5, 2016 PROSSER — As wine grape buds start to bloom during the early spring, many growers prepare wind machines to battle overnight frost. But operating those machines drives up fuel and power costs. So Washington State University researchers spent several years measuring the cold hardiness of wine and Concord grapes. That research provided a model that can help growers determine precisely when to implement frost-prevention measures. Markus Keller, a WSU viticulture professor, and others involved in the research often get calls from people in other wine regions wondering if the model could be replicated. But he said it’s not unusual to hear from Valley growers who are unaware of the research. “There is some kind of disconnect,” said Keller, who has worked at WSU’s Irrigated Agriculture Research & Extension Center in Prosser since 2001. “How do we tell that story so everyone is aware of it?” Keller hopes a new Washington Wine Commission initiative will improve awareness of viticulture and enology research and how it can improve wine grape growing and wine production. “We are doing all this stuff and not a lot of people know about it,” said commission President Steve Warner. Communication challenges Past attempts to bring research to those in the wine industry have been fractured. Legislation in the 1980s, which established a liter tax on wine sales to fund research, also created a group of winery owners and grape growers who were to determine industry research priorities. Dick Boushey, a longtime grape grower and owner of Boushey Vineyard near Grandview, admits the group, which he was part of, never was able to fully communicate with industry stakeholders.

2015 K Motor City Kitty Syrah With all the depth and richness you’ve come to expect from this single vineyard bottling - black cherry, earth, roasted meat, even charcoal abounds add dried herb. A thread of minerality and it all comes together in an exact and generous expression that speaks volumes as to why Washington Syrah is great! Current & Past Scores Blend 94 Points, Jeb Dunnuck “The 2015 Syrah Motor City Kitty Old Field Boushey Vineyard comes all from this site 100% Syrah (planted by Brennon and Dick Boushey in 2007) in 2015 and will come from this site going forward. The site is 8 acres consisting of Phelps, 383, 174 clones that are all co-fermented in concrete uprights. It offers crazy notes of smoke tobacco, charcoal, Appellation ripe black cherries, currants, and pepper. With medium to full-bodied richness, a lively, Washington State pure, pretty style on the palate, and fine tannin, it should put on weight with 2-3 years of bottle age and keep for a decade.” Production 95 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (v2014) Yield: 3.0 tons per acre “Named after a cat owned by Charles when he was living in Walla Walla, the 2014 MCK Yeast: native Syrah sports a deep purple color as well as ripe, decadent notes of black fruits, plums, 49 days on skins graphite, crushed rock and licorice. Big, sexy, seamless and pure, with present, yet ripe 35% new French oak puncheons tannin, drink it through 2024. It’s worth noting that this comes completely from the River 65% once-used French oak puncheons Rock vineyard in this vintage.

  • Merlot's Big Makeover
dining guide > T A S T I N G N O T E S writers. “It was not only an opportunity veteran Merlot maker to taste some truly remarkable wines, Mike Januik but also to experience one of the most exciting regions in America,” says Brian Freedman, a Philadelphia-based writer and contributor to Mariani’s Virtual Gourmet Newsletter (johnmariani.com). Campers explored why Washington is ideal for growing this grape, with discus- sions led by Dr. Kevin Pogue, a geology professor at Whitman College and a viti- culture consultant. “In the late summer and fall, our temperatures drop off more rapidly than in California, because we’re at a higher latitude that is more similar to Bordeaux’s,” Pogue says. Winemaker Mike Januik has another theory: “[The grapes are] planted on the original root- stock, which gives them more character, more oomph.” Januik, who has been making Merlot for more than 20 years, first at Chateau Ste. Michelle and now at a winery that bears his name in Woodinville, said the quality of the fruit has increased dra- matically as the vines have gotten older. “The vines aren’t gangly like when they’re younger and they produce grapes that are well balanced, with a lot of structure,” he Merlot’s Big says. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve poured Merlot for somebody and have Makeover them say it tastes more like a Cab.” Back from the pits of wine irrelevance, Marty Clubb, from L’Ecole No 41 in Merlots are reclaiming their place in the wine Walla Walla, says Merlot is a winemaker’s dream, because it thrives in various ter- world—and Washington is producing some of roir.

COMPASS WINES 1405 Commercial Avenue • Anacortes WA 98221 www.compasswines.com Happy New Year! Every year at this time, we here at Washington Wine Central, up in little ol’ Anacortes look back over the last year to reflect on the 10 Washington reds and 5 whites that blew us away. This is our own, extremely subjective, biased and politically incorrect assessment of what we have tasted over the last year. Unlike the other guys, we don’t do it blind, we don’t require wines to be submitted and we do wait until the whole year is over (seriously, a ‘wines of the year’ list that is written in August?). In fact, many of these wines are not even available for us to sell anymore, so blatant sales expectations are not part of the picture either. We pick those wines that really spoke to us, our customers and maybe they sold well, maybe they didn’t. There are a couple of ground rules: none of our own wines are allowed, i.e.; No BBQ or ded.reckoning or any other custom bottling done for us. We only will pick one wine per winery. But if there are multiple wines nominated by the staff, the winery is in the running for ‘Winery of the Year’. Two obvious choices that would probably be on this list every year have been grandfathered into the de-facto ‘Compass Wines Hall of Fame’ to make room for everybody else; Leonetti and Quilceda Creek, so they will not ever appear on here again, unless some monumental thing happens like the first 101 point wine or the first winery to get a perfect score on every wine they make.

  • WICKED Tasting Notes Saturday, November 24 - Mccrea Cellars
WICKED Tasting Notes Saturday, November 24 - McCrea Cellars McCrea Cellars was Washington State’s first winery entirely dedicated to Syrah and to Rhône varietal wines. In a region never before explored for this family of grapes, winemaker Doug McCrea dedicated nearly two decades seeking and establishing appropriate vineyard sites that would nurture Syrah and each Rhône varietal according to its individual requirements. The current releases from McCrea Cellars express the culmination of this effort, made possible only by the close relationship between McCrea and several of the State’s finest growers. Following are Doug McCrea’s tasting notes on the current releases. Join us in exploring the wines of this pioneer of Washington State wines! 2010 Grenache Blanc - $26.99 With only a few acres in production in the Northwest, this is truly a very exclusive wine. The vines are sourced from the famous Beaucastel vineyard in the Rhône, via Tablas Creek. This vintage is leaner, crisper and brighter than in the past, with green apples and pineapple predominating. The addition of some Marsanne helps balance the acidity and brings nice layers of fruit and minerals to the finished wine. It will complement foods where high acidity is desired, such as oysters on the half shell. 86% Grenache Blanc, 14% Marsanne 2010 Viognier - $26.99 In 1997 McCrea introduced Viognier to the Northwest. Based on the dozens of wineries that have followed suit, it has proven to be very well suited to Washington. This vintage they revisit the complexity that Roussanne brings to what’s now a Washington classic. The Viognier was fermented in stainless steel and finished in barrel, the Roussanne completely in neutral barrels.
