Born in the Sierra Leone region of West Africa about 1760, he was torn from his family as a boy and taken on the Middle Passage to slavery in South Carolina. When the American Revolutionary War erupted, he took his chance, like many other slaves, and served in the British army, hoping that his new masters would reward his military service with freedom. When the British lost the war, Kizell was lucky to be among the three thousand “black loyalist” soldiers and dependents the British evacuated to Nova Scotia in 1783. But his struggles had only just begun. The white loyalists taking refuge in Canada at the same time did their best to maintain the racial hierarchy that had served them so well in America, and Kizell and his fellow former slaves had new battles to fight. Canada’s climate was bitter for them in more ways than one—having fought a hot war in America to gain their freedom, they now had to fight a cold war in Nova Scotia just to retain it. By the time John Kizell was just thirty years old, he had already survived four episodes brimming with danger—the slave trade in Africa, bondage in America, the battlefields of the American Revolution, and the continuing struggle for freedom in Canada. These experiences alone would have made his life a remarkable saga, but his story does not end there. In 1792 Kizell joined the nearly twelve hundred black loyal- ists—or “Nova Scotians”—who left Canada for Sierra Leone. By a strange twist of fate, he was returning to his home region in Africa to help found the colony of Freetown on the site of an earlier settlement for freed slaves that was destroyed just three years before. Kizell and his fellow settlers had to contend with the African king who burned the first colony and with the British merchants at the Bance Island slave castle just seventeen miles upriver. For decades their colony of freed slaves had to coexist with the Atlantic slave trade still going on around their frail settlement in every direction. Kizell and the other Nova Scotian settlers also had to contend with the British “philanthropists” of the Sierra Leone Company who sponsored their colony. Their benefactors were well-meaning but also painfully paternalistic; and some of the white merchants they sent out from England to help promote the colony’s development were openly resentful of the settlers’ economic ambitions. The British officials who ran the colony were also hostile to the settlers’ American-style individualism. These former slaves may have fought for the British to gain their freedom, but their political instincts, it seems, were still American, and they bristled when their British benefactors made laws for them without their consent. Kizell’s response was to leave Foreword Freetown and spend much of his time trading and farming south of the colony in the Sherbro area, where he originally came from. He became a man of two worlds and x not fully comfortable in either. He resented the white man’s paternalism, but he also raged at his own people’s participation in the slave trade. He confronted the African kings repeatedly and sent detailed reports on their slaving activities back to the British governor in Freetown. Yet Kizell’s success as a merchant and farmer—and the respect he gained from both British officials and local African rulers—put him at the center of some impor- tant developments of his time. Kizell befriended Paul Cuffe when he sailed his ship Traveller from Philadelphia to Freetown in 1811, bringing black settlers from the United States and trying to establish commercial opportunities for his people on both sides of the Atlantic. And later, when the American Colonization Society sent its first settlers to West Africa in 1820 to establish the Liberia colony, the society turned to Kizell to find the right spot for the settlement. He took these black American pilgrims to his own home area in the Sherbro country, which turned out in the end to be a dis- astrous mistake that plunged him into bitter controversy. But when Liberia emerged a few years later, it was located not far south of the place Kizell had first recom- mended. Kevin Lowther brings John Kizell’s tumultuous story back to life. This is no small feat given that the records of Kizell’s existence are sparse, to say the least, and scattered across three continents. But Lowther scoured libraries and archives for official docu- ments, newspaper accounts, and Kizell’s few remaining letters and dispatches; and he visited the sites of his subject’s exploits, including his former haunts in Nova Scotia. Lowther also has the advantage of having served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Sierra Leone during the 1960s, so he knows the language, culture, and character of the peo- ple in the place Kizell came from before he was enslaved—and the place he returned to after he gained his freedom. But Lowther’s greatest accomplishment with this book is the way he weaves the scattered sources on Kizell together with the myriad details of time and place to produce a seamless narrative that vividly reflects all the danger, passion, turmoil, and commitment of John Kizell’s long and eventful life. Many Americans are only now learning about the black loyalists and their own struggle for independence during the American Revolutionary War and afterward in Canada and Sierra Leone. Two excellent books on this subject appeared in 2005— Adam Hochschild’s Bury the Chains and Simon Schama’s Rough Crossings. Both these works allow the Africans—and not just the British and Americans—to speak for themselves, but like so many earlier retellings of this tale, they present the black loy- alist saga from a group perspective. The advantage of Lowther’s narrative is that it tells the story through the eyes of just one interesting and determined man. Looking through John Kizell’s eyes, we can see the many complex calculations the black loy- alists had to make when dealing with their slave masters in the North American colonies, British officers in the Revolutionary War, white loyalist refugees in Canada, Foreword company officials in Freetown, and African chiefs in Sierra Leone. Seeing these situ- ations through Kizell’s eyes helps to clarify the politics of the time and brings into sharp focus the many difficult challenges the black loyalists faced in their long journey xi to freedom. Lowther’s book offers other valuable insights as well. As amazing as it may seem, most readers already familiar with the black loyalist story know little or nothing about John Kizell. Historians have written Freetown’s history mostly from the point of view of the British records, and Kizell does not appear there as often as some other promi- nent “Nova Scotians,” such as Thomas Peters. Other settlers, such as Boston King and David George, also left us more autobiographical writings. But Kizell stands out for the fact that he retained his ties to African Americans long after he arrived in Sierra Leone and, believing that black people would never be free and prosperous in America, he was always keen to help other former American slaves return to Africa to rebuild their lives.

Reviewed by Fred Morton (Retired, Department of History, Loras College) Published on H-SAfrica (August, 2007) Termites, Fantasy, and White Settlement In this work, Deidre Coleman, associate professor of literature at the University of Sydney, examines Romantic-era discourses associated with two 1790s British zones of colonization--Sierra Leone and Botany Bay. She argues that, since slave plantations no longer were allowed as a basis of colonization, all Romantic would-be imperialists had to devise new rationales for their settlements. Most of the monograph focuses on Sierra Leone. Henry Smeathman, who in 1786 proposed a scheme to resettle London's black population there, comes in for extended treatment. Of particular interest are his entomological studies of termites--Africa's premier insect colonist and imperialist. Smeathman used his pioneering entomological study of the termites, as well as his many phallic drawings of their mounds, as an explicit analogy of the way in which colonists could both organize themselves and dominate Africa. Clearly an out-of-the-box thinker, Smeathman also proposed using the emerging technology of hot air ballooning to explore Africa and to exploit its resources. Pornographic letters he sent out from the West African coast also receive some comment. No less bizarre was a small group of British-based Swedenborgians who settled in Sierra Leone in 1792.

The main argument of the paper is that: “Both white combatants sought to maintain control of African American slaves… and continually forced them into subservient military roles, despite the eventual promise of freedom, ultimately circumscribed by the victors.” The paper further claims that American promises for emancipation for supportive slaves was only as a reaction to British promises and that the conflict, following the Dunmore and Philipsburg Proclamations (British proclamations insuring post war emancipation for supportive slaves) was deeper than simply maintaining military slave allies in South Carolina. Instead, the conflict became a battle over which white party would define post-war freedom, assuming that slaves were incapable of truly understanding what liberty would mean.     BUNCE ISLAND A BRITISH SLAVE CASTLE IN SIERRA LEONE HISTORICAL SUMMARY By Joseph Opala James Madison University Harrisonburg, Virginia (USA) This essay appears as Appendix B in Bunce Island Cultural Resource Assessment and Management Plan By Christopher DeCorse Prepared on behalf of the United States Embassy, Sierra Leone and Submitted to the Sierra Leone Monuments and Relics Commission November, 2007 INTRODUCTION Bunce Island is a slave castle located in the West African nation of Sierra Leone. Slave castles were commercial forts operated by European merchants during the period of the Atlantic slave trade. They have been called “warehouses of humanity.” Behind their high protective walls, European slave traders purchased Africans, imprisoned them, and loaded them aboard the slave ships that took them on the middle passage to America. Today, there were about 40 major slave castles located along the 2,000 miles of coastline stretching between Mauritania in the north and Benin in the south. British slave traders operated on Bunce Island from about 1670 to 1807, exiling about 30,000 Africans to slavery in the West Indies and North America. While most of Bunce Island’s captives were taken to sugar plantations in the Caribbean Basin, a substantial minority went to Britain’s North American Colonies, and especially South Carolina and Georgia. Given the fact that only about 4% of the African captives transported during the period of the Atlantic slave trade went to North America, Bunce Island’s strong link to that region makes it unique among the West African slave castles. Bunce Island’s commercial ties to North America resulted, as we shall see, in this particular castle and its personnel being linked to important economic, political, and military developments on that continent.

    If Paul Cuffe Had Lived a Few Years Longer: Sierra Leone and Liberia, as They Might Have Been Kevin G. Lowther What if Paul Cuffe had lived a few more years and been able, as he hoped, to be of use to his brethren in Africa? In revisiting the early history of Sierra Leone and the American colonization movement, I have concluded that Cuffe’s death in 1817 was untimely not only for his family, but for the economic and political development of West Africa’s Windward Coast. My premise is this: Cuffe’s standing at home and with English supporters, as well as his commercial skills and New England practicality, would have helped Sierra Leone’s struggling black entrepreneurs to compete with the dominant European merchants. Cuffe’s prestige and African experience also would have guided the American colonization movement to a safe haven in the Sherbro region of modern-day Sierra Leone. Together, these developments would have promoted the emergence of more ethnically coherent nations than the Sierra Leone and Liberia of today. During his final year and a half, Cuffe was well aware of the obstacles in his path. His first voyage to Africa in 1811-1812 was a commercial squib; his second and last, four years later, was a financial sacrifice. He had to subsidize passage and subsistence for several of the nine African-American settler families. When he returned home in 1816, he was owed large sums by merchants and others in Sierra Leone. It was a somewhat exasperated Cuffe, in August of 1816, who asked a friend in Boston to inform the people of color that he would not be taking new settlers to Sierra Leone in the fall.1 Cuffe had raised expectations.
