The Conference was one of the first academic events in Ukraine that were held as part of the Year of Sustainable Tourism proclaimed by the United Nations. The Conference was attended by representatives of edu- cational institutions from Sweden, Poland and Ukraine, as well as members of environmental organizations, conservation institutions and local government bodies of the Lviv region. The publications reflect main problems addressed at the Conference, in particular theoretical and methodological aspects of sustain- able development and sustainable tourism, practical questions of implementing elements of sustainable development into various forms of tourism, as well as Ukraine’s policy in the context of European and cross-border tourism. The introductory article entitledResearch of sustainable tourism development, written by Marta Malska, Nataliya Rozhak and Volodymyr Rozhak from the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, is devoted to theoretical aspects of sustaina- ble development and international initiatives on its implementation in various spheres. The authors focus on main provisions and aspects of sustainable tourism with a detailed analysis of its natural resources and social components and analy- ze the implementation of sustainable development in tourism industry. The article by Anette Oxenswärdh from the Stockholm University, entitled Collective Learning towards Sustainable Tourism, addresses educational and orga- nizational aspects of sustainable tourism. It centers on the question of how col- lective learning can be used to incorporate sustainability in tourism activities. The study emphasizes the organizational process of collective learning by organizers of tourism activities. It is stressed that learning processes in tourist organizations contribute to their sustainable development. 10 Introduction Problems of introducing elements of sustainable development in gastrono- mic and urban tourism are discussed in the articles by Radoslav Knap from Paweł Włodkowic University College in Płock and by Olga Liubitseva with co-authors from the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. In addition to discussing their particular themes, the authors provide a detailed analysis of methodological studies in the field of sustainable tourism and ecotourism. In his article entitledSu - stainable Tourism – Management of the Enotourist Offer in Poland, Radosław Knap analyzes offers of visiting wineries in Poland, including attractions of wine-growing areas, wine-tasting, and educational and demonstration activities. It is emphasi- zed that enotourism in Poland is gaining popularity, and therefore the quality of service provided to participants of wine tours is becoming extremely important. A group of authors supervised by Prof. Olga Liubitseva analyzes the histo- rical and cultural potential of Ukrainian small towns for purposes of educatio- nal and cultural tourism in the article entitled Tourism as a factor in sustainable development of small towns. The authors highlight the special role of tourism for the socioeconomic development of small towns with a prominent historical and cultural heritage and recreational opportunities, proposing ways of using theore- tical, methodological and technological

    Die historische Straße VIA REGIA in der Ukraine von Prof. Dr. L. Voitovych, Direktor des Instituts für Mittelalter und Byzantinistik an der Lviver Nationaluniversität „Ivan Franko“, führender Wissenschaftler am Institut für Ukrainewissenschaft „Ivan Krypiakevych“ der Nationalen Akademie der Wissenschaften der Ukraine. 1. Die Kiever Rus In Zentral- und Osteuropa, zwischen der Ostsee und dem Schwarzen Meer, dem Dnjestr-, Dnepr - und Okabecken entlang, entstanden vom 7. bis zum 10. Jahrhundert ostslawische Stämme, die sich zu Stam- mesfürstentümern entwickelten: Fürstentümer der Chorvaten (Weiß-Kroaten: Zasyanen, Terebovlyanen, Poboranen), Volynyanen (eigentlich Volynyanen, Buzhanen, Lutschanen, Tschervjanen, Duliben), Drev- lyanen, Poljanen, Siverjanen, Dregovitschen, Krivitschen, Radimitschen, Vjatitschen und Slowenen. Spä- testens 753 legten skandinavische Wikinger ihren Stützpunkt Aldeigjuborg (Staraja Ladoga/ Alt-Ladoga) am Fluss Ladozhka neben seiner Einmündung in den Ladogasee an, der bis zum Ende des 8. Jahrhun- derts das Zentrum eines kleinen Königreiches mit einer gemischten finnisch-slawisch-warägischen Bevöl- kerung wurde. Mit dem Machtantritt Rjuriks aus dem jütländischen Zweig dänischer Skoldungen (Skjölder) wurde Lado- ga das Zentrum der slawischen und umliegenden finnischen Länder (Chud).     UKRAINE The constitution and other laws and policies protect religious freedom and, in practice, the government generally enforced these protections. The government generally respected religious freedom in law and in practice. There was no change in the status of respect for religious freedom by the government during the reporting period. Local officials at times took sides in disputes between religious organizations, and property restitution problems remained; however, the government continued to facilitate the return of some communal properties. There were reports of societal abuses and discrimination based on religious affiliation, belief, or practice. These included cases of anti-Semitism and anti- Muslim discrimination as well as discrimination against different Christian denominations in different parts of the country and vandalism of religious property. Various religious organizations continued their work to draw the government's attention to their issues, resolve differences between various denominations, and discuss relevant legislation. The U.S. government discusses religious freedom with the government as part of its overall policy to promote human rights. U.S. embassy representatives raised these concerns with government officials and promoted ethnic and religious tolerance through public outreach events. Section I. Religious Demography The country has an area of 233,000 square miles and a population of 45.4 million. The government estimates that there are 33,000 religious organizations representing 55 denominations in the country. According to official government sources, Orthodox Christian organizations make up 52 percent of the country's religious groups. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church Moscow Patriarchate (abbreviated as UOC-MP) is the largest group, with significant presence in all regions of the country except for the Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, and Ternopil oblasts (regions).

    Appendices I. Archival Sources Archival research for this monograph was conducted in Lviv, the former capital of Galicia, in 1983. To orient myself in the rich archival holdings of this city, I benefitted from the unpublished manuscript of Patricia K. Grimsted's forthcoming guide to Soviet Ukrainian archives and manuscript repositories' as well as from a number of published works.' Plans to use archives in Ternopil and Ivano-Frankivsk were frustrated, as was the plan to use the manuscript collection of the Institute of Literature of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (in Kiev). Work in the Austrian archives in 1982 did not uncover sources of direct relevance to the subject of this monograph, but the Viennese archives remain an important and little-explored repository of historical documentation on Galician history. The richest collection of unpublished sources on the history of Galicia during the Austrian period is located in the Central State Historical Archives of the Ukrainian SSR in Lviv (U Tsentrainyi derzhavnyi istorychnyi arkhiv URSR u rn. Lvovi; abbre- viated as TsDIAL). The Central Archives have inherited the papers of various Galician government institutions and major civic organizations. Unfortunately, there is no published guide to these archives, although a number of articles describe aspects of their holdings.' The papers of the Presidium of the Galician Viceroy's Office (U Haiytske narnisnytstvo, rn. Lviv. Prezydiia) are contained in TsDIAL, fond 146, opysy 4-8 (and presumably others).
