Women Readers of Middle Temple Celebrating 100 Years of Women at Middle Temple the Incorporated Council of Law Reporting for England and Wales
The Honourable Society of the Middle Temple Middle Society Honourable the The of 2019 Issue 59 Michaelmas 2019 Issue 59 Women Readers of Middle Temple Celebrating 100 Years of Women at Middle Temple The Incorporated Council of Law Reporting for England and Wales Practice Note (Relevance of Law Reporting) [2019] ICLR 1 Catchwords — Indexing of case law — Structured taxonomy of subject matter — Identification of legal issues raised in particular cases — Legal and factual context — “Words and phrases” con- strued — Relevant legislation — European and International instruments The common law, whose origins were said to date from the reign of King Henry II, was based on the notion of a single set of laws consistently applied across the whole of England and Wales. A key element in its consistency was the principle of stare decisis, according to which decisions of the senior courts created binding precedents to be followed by courts of equal or lower status in later cases. In order to follow a precedent, the courts first needed to be aware of its existence, which in turn meant that it had to be recorded and published in some way. Reporting of cases began in the form of the Year Books, which in the 16th century gave way to the publication of cases by individual reporters, known collectively as the Nominate Reports. However, by the middle of the 19th century, the variety of reports and the variability of their quality were such as to provoke increasing criticism from senior practitioners and the judiciary. The solution proposed was the establishment of a body, backed by the Inns of Court and the Law Society, which would be responsible for the publication of accurate coverage of the decisions of senior courts in England and Wales. -

JAMES A. ROBINSON BLACKWELL, OKLAHOMA Our Constitution Sustained by Free Men Note: James A
1950 JAMES A. ROBINSON BLACKWELL, OKLAHOMA Our Constitution Sustained by Free Men Note: James A. Robinson of Blackwen Oklahoma, won the thirteenth annual American Legion High School Oratorical Contest. The national finals contest, conducted in Phoenix, Arizona, saw Robinson defeat three other national finalists to capture the $4,000 first place award. Second place went to Edmund Kersten of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He took home a $2,500 scholarship. The third-place winner was Rodney Mara of Rhode Island who received a $4,000 scholarship. Fourth place went to Ross Larson of Kansas City, Kansas. He received a $500 stipend. The strength of the Constitution of the United States lies in the spirit by which it is sustained by free men. The very character of this dynamic document thrives on free men's meeting changing conditions. The American way of life always presents an enticement to free men, a challenge to be an individualist, to pioneer. The American people, free as they are, never hesitate to sweat and toil, to die if necessary, for a better day. In the pioneer spirit, free men nurture our free nation. When the Fathers of this noble Republic launched the Ship of State in 1789, the pioneer spirit, the spirit of the Constitution, flourished. Tides of rugged individualism swept over the treacherous mountains, across the mighty Mississippi, up the rolling plains to the steep Rockies and beyond until this young nation of free men had stretched her borders from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Over the swollen streams the pioneer led his family. In ox cart, in covered wagon, on foot, the young and the old alike dared to make their way. -

BY TONY TACCONE AND BENNETT S. COHEN, ADAPTED FROM THE NOVEL BY SINCLAIR LEWIS SOUND DESIGN AND MUSIC BY PAUL JAMES PRENDERGAST DIRECTED BY LISA PETERSON DEAR FRIENDS, Four years ago, in the lead-up to the 2016 election, Berkeley Rep produced Tony Taccone and Bennett Cohen’s adaptation of Sinclair Lewis’ frighteningly prescient novel. With a desire to see the story reach the widest possible audience, and celebrating the impulse that led the wpa in 1936 to share the original stage version of Lewis’ novel for free with 21 theatres across the country, Berkeley Rep offered the rights to Tony and Bennett’s adaptation to theatres, community centers, universities — anyone who wanted to put together their own production or reading. And now, in 2020, this story feels all the more vital, and the need to share it widely even more compelling. I am honored that more than 75 organizations from more than 20 states have partnered with us to share this production of It Can’t Happen Here for free with their audiences and communities. We are joined in this effort by long-time theatre colleagues, by universities from Howard in Wash- ington, DC to Saint Cloud State in Minnesota (near Lewis’ hometown), by libraries, community centers, and radio stations. I am deeply grateful to Tony and Bennett, director Lisa Peterson, sound designer Paul James Prendergast and his small but mighty team, and this extraordinary cast who have collaborated across miles and time zones, through wildfires and new technology, for their conviction that the- atre matters, that narrative helps us to see the world more clearly, and that together we have the capacity to effect change. -

Documentary Theatre, the Avant-Garde, and the Politics of Form
“THE DESTINY OF WORDS”: DOCUMENTARY THEATRE, THE AVANT-GARDE, AND THE POLITICS OF FORM TIMOTHY YOUKER Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 Timothy Earl Youker All rights reserved ABSTRACT “The Destiny of Words”: Documentary Theatre, the Avant-Garde, and the Politics of Form Timothy Youker This dissertation reads examples of early and contemporary documentary theatre in order to show that, while documentary theatre is often presumed to be an essentially realist practice, its history, methods, and conceptual underpinnings are closely tied to the historical and contemporary avant-garde theatre. The dissertation begins by examining the works of the Viennese satirist and performer Karl Kraus and the German stage director Erwin Piscator in the 1920s. The second half moves on to contemporary artists Handspring Puppet Company, Ping Chong, and Charles L. Mee. Ultimately, in illustrating the documentary theatre’s close relationship with avant-gardism, this dissertation supports a broadened perspective on what documentary theatre can be and do and reframes discussion of the practice’s political efficacy by focusing on how documentaries enact ideological critiques through form and seek to reeducate the senses of audiences through pedagogies of reception. History in Evelyn Waugh's Edmund Campion
Newsletter_42.1 EVELYN WAUGH NEWSLETTER AND STUDIES Vol. 42, No. 1 Spring 2011 1066 And All That? History in Evelyn Waugh’s Edmund Campion [1] by Donat Gallagher James Cook University Reviewing the American Edition of Edmund Campion for the New Yorker in 1946, Edmund Wilson, the eminent novelist and critic, wrote:“Waugh’s version of history is in its main lines more or less in the vein of 1066 And All That. Catholicism was a Good Thing and Protestantism was a Bad Thing, and that is all that needs to be said about it.”[2] Strangely, Wilson went on to accuse Edmund Campion of making “no attempt to create historical atmosphere”; and this of a biography that offends, where it offends, by locating its central biographical narrative within a boldly tendentious—and atmospheric— version of Elizabethan history. Despite this opening, which seems to promise a discussion of Waugh’s history in the broad, the following modest essay will concern itself mainly with slips and blunders, primarily because one noted Campion scholar virtually defines Waugh's Edmund Campion by its“irritating historical errors.”[3] But it is fair to ask how numerous, and how significant, such errors really are, and why they have been given such notoriety. Is Waugh’s history really “in the vein of 1066 And All That”? At the outset it must be said that Waugh went to extraordinary lengths to disclaim any pretensions to scholarship for his “short, popular life.” He emphasized his heavy dependence on Richard Simpson’s biography of Campion,[4] and in the Preface to the Second [British] Edition declares: “All I have done is select the incidents which struck a novelist as important, and relate them in a single narrative.” But Waugh was being modest, for close reading shows that he drew extensively on the scholarly works listed in his bibliography and that he used a collection of “notes and documents” made available to him by Father Leo Hicks, S.J., an historian of note. -
