Opener: Who was helpful and encouraging to you when you were young and new to the faith?

Read the Passage - Acts 18:23-19:20

1. Look at Acts 18:22-23. What do you think the purpose was for Paul to go back through these churches?

2. What are some key takeaways we can learn from the way engaged in order to teach him the word of God more accurately? (Acts 18:24-28)

3. In :1-7 Paul engaged Apollos by asking a key question. How did this set Paul up to be able to minister effectively to Apollos?

4. What does Paul’s encounter with the disciples of John teach us about the need to evangelize religious people as well as non-religious people?

5. Read Acts 19:8-10. What seems to be the signal throughout Acts for Paul to stop teaching in the synagogues? Why do you think this is so? What do these “stop and go” signals teach you about ministry in general?

6. Read Acts 19:11-20. The Holy Spirit was doing extraordinary things through Paul which spoke to a culture steeped in mysticism and magic. How did the people respond to what the Holy Spirit was doing through Paul? What does this tell you about how God meets people where they are and gives them what they need to believe?

7. Read Acts 19:13-16. How is this story similar to that of Simon the Sorcerer in :9-25? How do people try to use Jesus for their own purposes today? What is the difference between that and real faith in Christ?

8. This passage ends on a very positive note. Many people believed and even destroyed ties to their past life. How does your new life with Christ look different from your past life without Christ?

Memory Verse - Acts 19:4-5 ESV And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
