St Thomas's Chapel, dating back to the 12th century, lay on the original site of the hotel. The present hotel building was erected in 1915 and was used as a wartime telephone exchange from 1940. It opened as the London Bridge Hotel in 1998 and as major work was being carried out on the site to transform it into the hotel; artefacts were discovered including a Roman comb and mosaic flooring.
