Presenting the papal Golden Rose to the city government on Laetare Sunday in Lent, he took the opportunity to give an oration in praise of the city (laudatio urbis), commenting on its nobility, its Roman origins, its splendid buildings, and its eminent men in various fields as well as its holy men and women. -

The language for describing arms is known as blazon and derives many of its terms from French. The aim of blazon is to describe heraldic arms unambiguously and as concisely as possible. The disease does not kill the plant outright, but over time, the loss of leaves can weaken the plant making it more susceptible to other stresses and to winter damage. Black spots, one-tenth to one-half inch in diameter, develop first on upper leaf surfaces. Later, areas adjacent to the black spots turn yellow and leaves drop prematurely, usually beginning at the bottom of the plant and progressing upward. Lookalikes: Spot anthracnose (shot-hole disease) is not a major problem unless it is very hot (too hot for black spot). Spots caused by black spot are fuzzy around the edges, then turn yellow and brown. Spots caused by anthracnose are smooth edged and the centers turn grey and drop out. Treatment is the same, but if a pesticide is used, it must be labeled for black spot or anthracnose, whichever disease you are treating. Rose rosette Rose rosette disease, also known as witches'-broom of rose, is a virus or virus-like disease, that is spread by a microscopic eriophyid mite. The main symptom is a tightly grouped, proliferation of distorted, usually bright red foliage (a witches'-broom). Affected canes may be excessively thorny, thicker than unaffected canes and slow to mature. The canes are also soft, as are the prickles, and will break off with little pressure. -

This whirlwind weekend began with the Board Meeting on Rose Arrangement Workshop———– 10 Thursday, taking care of important ARS business. Following that was the Rose Show, Rose Arrangement School————— 11 held at the Rose Center in Tyler. This time, we didn’t bring any roses, since it was the Coming Events/Rose Show Dates—— 11 middle of October. Although that month was particularly dry, the timing of our blooms was off, and we didn’t have any worthy specimens. Old Garden Roses: The National Rose Show was rather small, although there were some beautiful What Are They?—–—————– 12-16 blooms, and some varieties we hadn’t seen before. After judging, we volunteered to guide Hybrid Gallicas——— 12-13 Damasks—————– 13-14 the busloads of visitors around the show. Banners in heraldic art Magnus Backrnark Abstract The banner is very useful to heraldic art. It is a carrier of charges and colours, just like its coun terpart the shield. But where the shield can be seen as crude, heavy, flat and robust - its purpose being taking hits- the banner is brilliant, swift, full of I ife and motion. Its purpose is spiritual. It is lifted above anyone's head, above dust and confusion, for inspiration and guiding. Something of this character, I will with this article try to show by examples that the heraldic artist, if lucky, can translate in his or her work. First, we could though take a quick glance at the historical development of banners. The term banner approves, as we shall see, to a specific kind of flag, but in a wide sense of the word a banner is any ensign made of a peace of cloth, carried on a staff and with symbolic value to its owner(s). The profound nature of this innovation, which seem to be of oriental origin, makes it the mother of all kinds of flags. The etymologi cal root of the word banner is the French word banniere, derived from latin bandaria, bandum, which has German extraction, related to gothic bandwa, bandw6, 'sign'. 1 The birth of heraldry in the l2 h century Western world was preceded by centuries of use of early forms of banners, called gonfanons.
