Japanese Anime Japanese Anime By:Wael and Shairon First Generation of Japanese Anime The mainstream production of anime Due to various reasons, many earlier began during World War II. animations were lost or destroyed. Momotarō: Umi no Shinpei (1945) The earliest Japanese animation was which was a propaganda film and was discovered in a home projector by the first anime feature-length film. Katsudō Shashin and is believed to be created around 1907 - 1911. These Older Anime looked more like However its creator is unknown and it disney style characters and completely was not for public viewing. different from contemporary anime Imokawa Mukuzo Genkanban no Maki is considered to be the first professional anime film. It was created by Ōten Shimokawa in 1917. First Popular Animation Companies In 1948, Toei Animation was founded and 10 years later introduced the first colour anime feature film: The Tale of the White Serpent (1958). This film was more Disney-like, but was considered the first “anime” ever. Toei continued to produce Disney like films and later produced three of the most well known anime, Dragon ball, Sailor Moon, and One Piece. Around the same time Mushi Productions released Astro Boy in 1963 which is considered as the first popular anime series. (The Tale of the White Serpent) The aesthetics of Astro Boy later defined the next generation of anime from Lupin III, Space Battleship Yamato, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, and even Pokémon. ❖ 1970’s Japanese animation were losing to television, causing many animation companies to go bankrupt. It also caused young animators to be assigned as directors even before they are promoted. This caused the evolution of Japanese animation to become faster than expected, this is because it allowed young animators to experiment more and produce new content. ❖ 1980’s Is the boom of anime series worldwide, specifically mecha genres. U.S. animators utilised Japanese animation to created their own tv series, examples are Toei animation’s Transformers and Hasbro's G.I Joe. Dragon Ball (1984) introduce the martial arts genre. It also influenced more martial arts anime and manga series including YuYu Hakusho (1990), One piece (1997) and Naruto (1999). This time period also introduced the first OVA ( Original Video Animation). This was also when the first sports anime made its debut in 1983, Captain Tsubasa, the formula was then used to other sports anime like Prince of Tennis, Slam Dunk and Eyeshield 21. ❖ 1990s Saw the popular video game series, Pokemon, which still had a television series, trading cards and toys. Other anime that gained international success were Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, and Digimon; this introduced the martial arts superhero, magical girl genre, and action adventure genre. ❖ 2000s This time period is where most genres were revived, such as Real Robot and Super Robot genre. With the revival of genres, popular early anime series also got a revival; In this list includes, four new series of Transformers, G.I. Joe: Sigma 6 and Dragon Ball Z Kai. This period also earned Anime a lot of recognition, from being nominated, to winning major awards. The best example of an anime film at this time is Spirited Away. ❖ 2010s This time period has just started and no major events has happened yet. Recent popular anime of this time period are Attack on Titan, Angel Beats!, Toriko, Hunter x Hunter and Sword Art Online. Influences That Exist In Anime Today Since Astro Boy was the first ever popular anime series many anime and foreign animators took features of Astro Boy and instilled them in a lot of anime. From their big eyes that could portrait more emotions to their minimalistic mouth, larger eyes also make the character much cuter. This is also the reason why young characters have the largest eyes while older characters have smaller and sharper eyes; you could really see this in the anime, Hunter x Hunter. From his heroism, to his innocence of the world. One of Osamu Tezuka’s largest contributions though is the animation style he had used for Astro Boy and the manga artists he inspired and guided. He had guided shotaro Ishinomori creator of long popular series Cyborg 009 and was a large influence in anime & tokusatsu. He also guided Go Nagai who created Cutie Honey, Devilman, Mazinger, and even pioneered the ecchi genre with Harenchi Gakuen(Translates to “Shameless School”) which is considered to be the first modern day erotic manga (sometimes considered the first hentai manga). So indirectly Astro Boy is the reason for erotic manga or hentai manga. Anime Influences In Hollywood Many big name movies in hollywood have either some sort of similarity to a certain anime or are full on ripoffs. A major example of this would be The Lion King and Kimba the White Lion. Since the internet was only in its infancy at the time(1994) most people didn’t have knowledge of animations across the globe, that’s what Disney counted on when they made almost an exact ripoff of Kimba the White Lion. Osamu Tezuka created Kimba the White lion as a manga in the 1950’s, which was then broadcasted as an animated series in the mid 1960’s. (It even aired in the united states.) The similarities of the two are crazy, from EXACT SHOTS (mufasa on the pride rock, his ghost appearing to simba in the sky) to identical characters and plot. Even The Lion King star Matthew Broderick (the voice VS of adult simba) thought he was initially working on a version of Kimba. To be fair Disney’s Lion King isn’t the only film to do something like this many hollywood blockbuster films have. Including The Matrix (Ghost In The Shell), Avatar (Princess Mononoke), Inception (Paprika), Looper (Akira), and Pacific Rim (Neon Genesis Evangelion). This is done by analysing four different series from 2010s, in which incest is a major theme. The analysis is done using visual analysis. The study concludes that although the series can show sexualization of drawn underage girls, reading the works as if they would posit either real or fictional little sisters as sexual targets. Instead, the analysis suggests that following the narrative, the works should be read as fictional underage girls expressing a pure feelings and sexuality, unspoiled by adult corruption. To understand moe, it is necessary to understand the history of Japanese animation. Much of the genres, themes and styles in manga and anime are due to Tezuka Osamu, the “god of manga” and “god of animation”. From the 1950s, Tezuka was influenced by Disney and other western animators at the time.

  • The Origins of the Magical Girl Genre Note: This First Chapter Is an Almost
The origins of the magical girl genre Note: this first chapter is an almost verbatim copy of the excellent introduction from the BESM: Sailor Moon Role-Playing Game and Resource Book by Mark C. MacKinnon et al. I took the liberty of changing a few names according to official translations and contemporary transliterations. It focuses on the traditional magical girls “for girls”, and ignores very very early works like Go Nagai's Cutie Honey, which essentially created a market more oriented towards the male audience; we shall deal with such things in the next chapter. Once upon a time, an American live-action sitcom called Bewitched, came to the Land of the Rising Sun... The magical girl genre has a rather long and important history in Japan. The magical girls of manga and Japanese animation (or anime) are a rather unique group of characters. They defy easy classification, and yet contain elements from many of the best loved fairy tales and children's stories throughout the world. Many countries have imported these stories for their children to enjoy (most notably France, Italy and Spain) but the traditional format of this particular genre of manga and anime still remains mostly unknown to much of the English-speaking world. The very first magical girl seen on television was created about fifty years ago. Mahoutsukai Sally (or “Sally the Witch”) began airing on Japanese television in 1966, in black and white. The first season of the show proved to be so popular that it was renewed for a second year, moving into the era of color television in 1967.

  • Pirates, Justice and Global Order in the Anime 'One Piece '
PIRATES, JUSTICE AND GLOBAL ORDER IN THE ANIME ‘ONE PIECE ‘ "Remove justice, and what are kingdoms but gangs of criminals on a large scale? (St. Augustine City of God, Book 4, Ch. 4). DRAFT, work in progress…do not quote without permission I. INTRODUCTION The manga/anime (Japanese cartoon) titled ONE PIECE telling the story of the pirate Monkey D. Luffy and his crew is one of the most successful Japanese cultural products of all time. The first volume of One Piece was published in 1997 and it has been published weekly ever since. It has sold over 430.000.000 million copies worldwide (70.000.000 outside Japan) and it has set already years ago the world record for "The most copies published for the same comic book series, by a single author."1 Although One Piece is the most successful Japanese manga series there are many others -like Dragon Ball or Full Metal Alchemist 2 - with fans around the World, making Japanese manga not only a successful export product, but many believe also a source of Japanese soft power (Bouissou 2006). This in the case of One Piece is especially true for East Asia, with many young readers in the region being inspired by the manga to turn their interest towards Japan (Hirai et al. 2014). Although such products of popular culture are produced mainly for entertainment purposes, we should not dismiss the reflections they make about the social and the political world, as it is recognized that they do not only depict, but also construct identities, shape security narratives and form our world, explaining why scholars increasingly turned their attention to their study (Weldes and Rowley 2015).

1 Fall 2013 565:333 Anime: Introduction to Japanese Animation M 5: 3:55pm-5:15pm (RAB-204) W 2, 3: 10:55am-1:55pm (RAB-206) Instructor: Satoru Saito Office: Scott Hall, Room 338 Office Hours: M 11:30am-1:30pm E-mail: [email protected] Course Description This course examines anime or Japanese animation as a distinctly Japanese media form that began its development in the immediate postwar period and reached maturity in the 1980s. Although some precedents will be discussed, the course’s primary emphasis is the examination of the major examples of Japanese animation from 1980s onward. To do so, we will approach this media form through two broad frameworks. First, we will consider anime from the position of media studies, considering its unique formal characteristics. Second, we will consider anime within the historical and cultural context of postwar and contemporary Japan by tracing its specific themes and characteristics, both on the level of content and consumption. The course will be taught in English, and there are no prerequisites for this course. To allow for screenings of films, one of two class meetings (Wednesdays) will be a double- period, which will combine screenings with introductory lectures. The other meeting (Mondays), by which students should have completed all the reading assignments of the week, will provide post-screening lectures and class discussions. Requirements Weekly questions, class attendance and performance 10% Four short papers (3 pages each) 40% Test 15% Final paper (8-10 pages double-spaced) 35% Weekly questions, class attendance and performance Students are expected to attend all classes and participate in class discussions.
