This caused the evolution of Japanese animation to become faster than expected, this is because it allowed young animators to experiment more and produce new content. ❖ 1980’s Is the boom of anime series worldwide, specifically mecha genres. U.S. animators utilised Japanese animation to created their own tv series, examples are Toei animation’s Transformers and Hasbro's G.I Joe. Dragon Ball (1984) introduce the martial arts genre. It also influenced more martial arts anime and manga series including YuYu Hakusho (1990), One piece (1997) and Naruto (1999). This time period also introduced the first OVA ( Original Video Animation). This was also when the first sports anime made its debut in 1983, Captain Tsubasa, the formula was then used to other sports anime like Prince of Tennis, Slam Dunk and Eyeshield 21. ❖ 1990s Saw the popular video game series, Pokemon, which still had a television series, trading cards and toys. Other anime that gained international success were Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, and Digimon; this introduced the martial arts superhero, magical girl genre, and action adventure genre. ❖ 2000s This time period is where most genres were revived, such as Real Robot and Super Robot genre. With the revival of genres, popular early anime series also got a revival; In this list includes, four new series of Transformers, G.I. Joe: Sigma 6 and Dragon Ball Z Kai. This period also earned Anime a lot of recognition, from being nominated, to winning major awards. The best example of an anime film at this time is Spirited Away. ❖ 2010s This time period has just started and no major events has happened yet. Recent popular anime of this time period are Attack on Titan, Angel Beats!, Toriko, Hunter x Hunter and Sword Art Online. Influences That Exist In Anime Today Since Astro Boy was the first ever popular anime series many anime and foreign animators took features of Astro Boy and instilled them in a lot of anime.From their big eyes that could portrait more emotions to their minimalistic mouth, larger eyes also make the character much cuter. This is also the reason why young characters have the largest eyes while older characters have smaller and sharper eyes; you could really see this in the anime, Hunter x Hunter. From his heroism, to his innocence of the world. One of Osamu Tezuka’s largest contributions though is the animation style he had used for Astro Boy and the manga artists he inspired and guided. He had guided shotaro Ishinomori creator of long popular series Cyborg 009 and was a large influence in anime & tokusatsu. He also guided Go Nagai who created Cutie Honey, Devilman, Mazinger, and even pioneered the ecchi genre with Harenchi Gakuen(Translates to “Shameless School”) which is considered to be the first modern day erotic manga (sometimes considered the first hentai manga). So indirectly Astro Boy is the reason for erotic manga or hentai manga. Anime Influences In Hollywood Many big name movies in hollywood have either some sort of similarity to a certain anime or are full on ripoffs. A major example of this would be The Lion King and Kimba the White Lion. Since the internet was only in its infancy at the time(1994) most people didn’t have knowledge of animations across the globe, that’s what Disney counted on when they made almost an exact ripoff of Kimba the White Lion. Osamu Tezuka created Kimba the White lion as a manga in the 1950’s, which was then broadcasted as an animated series in the mid 1960’s. (It even aired in the united states.) The similarities of the two are crazy, from EXACT SHOTS (mufasa on the pride rock, his ghost appearing to simba in the sky) to identical characters and plot. Even The Lion King star Matthew Broderick (the voice VS of adult simba) thought he was initially working on a version of Kimba. To be fair Disney’s Lion King isn’t the only film to do something like this many hollywood blockbuster films have. Including The Matrix (Ghost In The Shell), Avatar (Princess Mononoke), Inception (Paprika), Looper (Akira), and Pacific Rim (Neon Genesis Evangelion).
