Tets Kimura Japan has three New Year’s Days this year. 1 January, the calendar new year was the obvious beginning, then followed 1 April, the start of the financial and academic year that is famously symbolised by seasonal cherry blossoms – and now 1 May, the once-only celebration of the first day of what will be known as the Reiwa era of imperial reign. The transition from the current Heisei era to the next era of Reiwa will occur as the Reigning Emperor has decided to abdicate his position to the Crown Prince, even though this was not constitutionally permissible. No Emperor has stepped down from the position in Japan in the last 200 years, but it was the Emperor’s wish to do so as he found it difficult to be responsible in his role at his age. He is 85. Tuesday will be his last day as the Emperor, and under the “one generation, one title” rule, the era of Heisei will consequently end. According to the newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun, 58% of Japanese think Japan will move to a better direction in the new era of Reiwa, whereas 17% see a negative future. The current era of Heisei started on 8 January 1989, a day after the Showa Emperor passed away. When the dramatic Showa era (1926-1989) ended, a time in which Japan experienced wars, the Allied Occupation, and the rapid post- Second World War recovery, Japan decided to name the following imperial reign period Heisei.

    The Price Collection JAKUCHU and The Age of Imagination The Etsuko and Joe Price Collection based in California is world-renowned for its superb Edo period paintings. The Exhibition entitled The Price Collection-Jakuchû and the Age of Imagination will be held at the Tokyo National Museum (Ueno Park, Tokyo) from July 4th through August 27th, 2006. Some fifty years ago, Joe Price became fascinated by, and began to collect, paintings by the individualist artists of the Edo period, a field ignored by the art historians of the time. Mr. Price dubbed his collection and his foundation the Shin’enkan, borrowing one of the studio names of Itô Jakuchû (1716-1800), an individualist painter whose popularity has grown in recent years. Today the Price Collection centers around a superb group of works by Jakuchû, along with major works by Jakuchû ’s other Kansai region contemporaries such as Nagasawa Rosetsu (1754-1799) and Mori Sosen (1747-1821), along with Edo-based Rimpa artists Sakai Hôitsu (1761-1828) and Suzuki Kiitsu (1796-1858). The marvels of the collection include paintings by ukiyo-e artists and other painters who have recently attracted great attention from art lovers. This exhibition presents a selection of 101 works chosen jointly by Mr. Price and the Tokyo National Museum staff from more than 600 works in the collection. The exhibition is divided into five sections, with the paintings arranged according to their artistic lineage. A special feature of this exhibition is its avoidance of glass cases in one of the galleries and use of careful lighting effects to create a display environment similar to an Edo period viewing experience.

During the first three decades of the twentieth century, Japanese society underwent significant changes in a short amount of time. After the intense modernizations of the late nineteenth century, the start of the twentieth century witnessed an increase in overseas militarism, turbulent domestic politics, an evolving middle class, and the expansion of roles for women to play outside the home. As such, the early decades of the twentieth century in Japan were a crucial period for the formation of modern ideas about femininity and womanhood. Before, during, and after the rule of her husband Emperor Taishō (1879-1926; r. 1912-1926), Empress Teimei held a highly public role, and was frequently seen in a variety of visual media.

    July 24, 2019 <Daikin 25th Survey on Attitudes of Modern People toward Air> Survey of 500 Native Tokyo Residents on “Attitudes toward Air in the Tokyo Summer in the First Year of Reiwa” Tokyo Summer in the First Year of Reiwa is 50 Days Longer Than Any Other Era in Modern History!? Direction of the Tokyo summer in the first year of Reiwa as seen from changes in attitudes from the past Showa and Heisei eras Daikin Industries, Ltd. conducted a survey of 500 native Tokyo residents on their attitudes toward air in the Reiwa Era and changes in attitudes toward air in the Tokyo summer from the Showa and the Heisei eras. Implemented since 2002, the Daikin “Survey on Attitudes of Modern People toward Air” highlights the awareness and issues that modern people have relating to “air” and aims to promote interest and appreciation among many people for “air,” which is often unnoticed in daily life. In Japan, This year marks the end of the Heisei Era, which lasted for approximately 30 years, and the beginning of the Reiwa Era. Following the Showa and Heisei eras, what will the nature of the “air” be in the Reiwa Era, and what lifestyle changes will accompany it? The Japanese summer in recent years has seen a continuation of record-setting heat waves and extreme heat, and there is concern for the direction of the 2019 summer that begins the Reiwa Era. In the “25th Survey on Attitudes of Modern People toward Air,” we conducted a survey by comparing the present and past (remembrances of respondents when they were elementary school students around the age of 10 years old) concerning changing attitudes toward air in the summer for Tokyo, a city which is expected to attract more foreign visitors and receive increasingly more attention from the world in the future, and toward air conditioners.

    Those Beautiful Images We Know So Well, Shown In Context Rinpa: The Aesthetics of the Capital, at the Kyoto National Museum Review by Emily Sano, October 20, 2015 The abundant exhibitions at many museums in major cities and the national museums provide one of the special treats of visiting Japan in the autumn. This year is no exception, but visitors need to know that this year's most significant exhibit for the traditional Japanese arts is Rinpa: The Aesthetics of the Capital, at the Kyoto National Museum. The exhibition, which opened on October 10, will last only six weeks, until November 23, 2015. While the excellent catalogue lists 175 objects, many are on view for shorter periods of time, and some displays change every week on Mondays during the run of the exhibition. The term Rinpa―which is combined from the second character in Kōrin's name and the character for "school" or "style"―was coined in modern times and did not exist during the Edo period. Though sometimes described as a school, Rinpa is less a direct lineage of teachers and their disciples than a lineage of personal artistic influence: Sōtatsu's work inspired Kōrin, whose oeuvre, in turn, influenced Hōitsu. Of course, these three artists never actually met: most artists working in the Rinpa mode discovered the aesthetic for themselves and pursued it out of admiration for their artistic predecessors. “Rinpa and Kyoto,” English preface, p. V) One of the most familiar of Japanese decorative styles, Rinpa (also spelled Rimpa, which this reviewer prefers, but I will stay with the Museum's spelling) includes works commonly viewed as the epitome of the arts of Japan.

Throughout the Edo period (1603-1868), works of fiction were liberally illustrated with woodblock printed images, which, especially towards the mid-19th century, had become an essential component of most popular literature in Japan. With the opening of Japan’s borders in the Meiji period (1868-1912), writers who had grown up reading illustrated fiction were exposed to foreign works of literature that largely eschewed the use of illustration as a medium for storytelling, in turn leading them to reevaluate the role of image in their own literary tradition. As authors endeavored to produce a purely text-based form of fiction, modeled in part on the European novel, they began to reject the inclusion of images in their own work.

Of Mice and Maidens: Ideologies of Interspecies Romance in Late Medieval and Early Modern Japan Abstract Interspecies marriage (irui kon'in) has long been a central theme in Japanese literature and folklore. Frequently dismissed as fairytales, stories of interspecies marriage illuminate contemporaneous conceptions of the animal-human boundary and the anxieties surrounding it. This dissertation contributes to the emerging field of animal studies yb examining otogizoshi (Muromachi/early Edo illustrated narrative fiction) concerning elationshipsr between human women and male mice. The earliest of these is Nezumi no soshi ("The Tale of the Mouse"), a fifteenth century ko-e ("small scroll") attributed to court painter Tosa Mitsunobu. Nezumi no soshi was followed roughly a century later by a group of tales collectively named after their protagonist, the mouse Gon no Kami. Unlike Nezumi no soshi, which focuses on the grief of the woman who has unwittingly married a mouse, the Gon no Kami tales contain pronounced comic elements and devote attention to the mouse-groom's perspective.
