Dear Colleague, Brexit funding – additional funding for port areas Firstly, let me offer my personal thanks for your continued cooperation and effort as we prepare to leave the European Union on 31 October. I am aware that this is both an important and complex undertaking and I am therefore pleased to be able to offer further funding to support you in this vital work. Earlier in August I announced £20 million of funding for all local authorities in England to aid Brexit preparations, and each local authority now has confirmation of the amount of this funding they will receive. I mentioned in my letter of 6 August that the Government recognises that certain areas face more acute pressures in preparing for Brexit. I am therefore announcing a further £5 million to be distributed between councils which have a major air, land or sea port in or near their areas. This is in addition to the £3.14 million ports funding we provided in February. The £5 million includes £2.6 million which will be distributed to local authorities in Kent, in recognition of the additional pressures that local authorities in the county are likely to face. These pressures are likely to arise as a result of the number of highly impacted and strategic ports they hold, namely the Port of Dover, Eurotunnel, Ashford and Ebbsfleet. The £2.6 million for local authorities in Kent will be shared between all local authorities in the county. Kent County Council will receive £1 million, and £1.6 million will be shared between a further 13 local authorities in the county. In addition to the funding we are providing to Kent, £2.4 million will be distributed between local authorities outside of Kent with high impact and strategically important ports in their areas. These ports, as well as the ports in Kent, have been prioritised based on a number of factors including the expected impact on the local area, the amount of EU goods received by port areas into the country and the areas’ wider importance to the UK’s trade network.
Annex A provides a detailed breakdown of these allocations. It is vital that local authorities continue with their preparations and ensure they are ready to deliver Brexit, whatever the circumstances. This funding is intended to help you ensure that your local authority is ready to respond to the increased pressures you could face if we leave without a deal. Your work in helping ensure strategic parts of the UK are ready by 31 October will ensure we are able to make the very best of the opportunities that leaving the EU will offer. If you would like to discuss the content of this letter, please get in touch with my officials via . I am copying this letter to all Leaders of all local authorities receiving this funding.
