Perubahan Cara Berpakaian Priyayi Kecil Surakarta 1900-1920
PRIYAYI DAN FASHION; PERUBAHAN CARA BERPAKAIAN PRIYAYI KECIL SURAKARTA 1900-1920 Muhammad Misbahuddin1* 1IAI Sunan Giri Ponorogo E-mail: *[email protected] No. WA: Abstract: Clothing is not limited to fabrics that cover the body. For a long time it took even centuries, especially when people started to recognize civilization. Clothing became an extension of the social body in their social life. In Javanese culture, self-esteem is in words, while body honor is in clothing. It's just that this phrase is only used by the elite in Surakarta and doesn't apply to ordinary people. At the beginning of the 20th century, along with the rise of the common people to the upper middle class, the struggle for elite status was fought through the wearing of clothes. Using historical methods of analysis and multidimensional approaches, the author attempts to demonstrate the complexity of the struggle of ordinary people to reach the position of the upper middle class by wearing clothes. The sacralization of clothing, long lauded by the elite, began to de-sacralize at the beginning of the 20th century. De- sacralization is symbolized by the elegant and elegant posture of the little Surakarta priyayi. This attitude has an ambiguous impact on the social reality in which new civic experiences arise in society. FENOMENA PERGESERAN KONFLIK PEMIKIRAN ISLAM DARI TRADISIONALIS Vs MODERNIS KE FUNDAMENTALIS Vs LIBERALIS
20 FENOMENA PERGESERAN KONFLIK PEMIKIRAN ISLAM DARI TRADISIONALIS vs MODERNIS KE FUNDAMENTALIS vs LIBERALIS Khoirul Huda* Abstract: A new mode of religious conflict has emerged in Indonesia following the fall of the old regime in the country. The conflict in point is that between the fundamentalists and the liberals, one that means that the nuance of the conflict is no longer organizational any more than it is ideological. We now rarely hear about the conflicts between the traditionalists and the modernists, just as we now rarely are capable of differentiating their basic tenets. The difference between the two has now become to a large extent vague. In the meantime, conflicts are now taking place between the fundamentalists and the liberals on almost regular basis. Hence, we hear the conflict for example between the FUUI and Ulil Abshar Abdalla who received death threat from the afro-mentioned organization. And also the so-called Monas Tragedy, which for some reflects the real tension between the two currents of thought. This paper is designed to analyze this conflictual phenomenon and the implication that may emerge thereof by using the Post- structural theory, which is the continuation of the structuralist theory of Levi-Strauss. What we mean by the Post-structural theory is that which is developed by Michel Foucault (d. 1984) where he speaks of the archeology of knowledge and the genealogy of power. In Foucault’s theory, the former is to do with the organization of documents, their classification, their distribution and management in an orderly manner so as to enable us to differentiate between which are relevant and which are not. -
The Islamic Traditions of Cirebon
Chapter 1: Introduction POINTS OF DEPARTURE: REVIEW OF PREVIOUS STUDIES ¼syncretism is very conspicuous in the religion of Java. This perhaps results from the flexibility of the Javanese people in accepting various incoming religions from the outside world. In historical times, upon their underlying animistic beliefs, Javanese had successively accepted Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam and Christianity, and ªJavanizedº them all. And as can be seen¼worship of various spirits strongly exists in the deep stratum of folk psychology. It is said ¼ among the Javanese: ªSedaya agami sami kemawonº ¼ Although 90% of the inhabitants ¼profess Islam, they all belong to ¼ªwong abanganº, whose Islamic beliefs seem to cover the surface of their traditional concepts. This is well proved by the continuing existence of the various salamatans ¼1 This quotation reflects a view adopted by some Indonesianists who hold as an axiom that Javanese Islam is syncretic. Its basis is a conviction that animism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam have formed layers of Javanese culture. From this conviction derives an approach of seeing Javanese Islam as founded on multi-layered syncretism. Everything is then analysed and explained in terms of this `multi layered' schemata. One version of this syncretic argument is championed by Clifford Geertz who developed an abangan-santri-priyayi trichotomy for seeing the socio-religious pattern and development of Java.2 His approach has enjoyed currency among many Indonesianists for the last few decades. Subsequent work on Javanese socio-religious discourse cannot proceed without reference to him. For this reason, I wish to take his work as the focus of my initial discussion. -
