In the last decades, the existence of the Soul has been seriously considered by Quantum Physics. It has been frequently described as a body of unknown energy coupled to human body by means of a mutual interaction. The Quantum Physics shows that energy is quantized, i.e., it has discrete values that are defined as energy levels. Thus, along the life of a person, the energy of its soul is characterized by several quantum levels of energy. Here, we show by means of application of specific electromagnetic radiations on the human body, that it is possible to revert the energy of the soul to previous energy levels. This process can have several therapeutic applications. -

Rethinking the Connection of Metaphor and Commonplace
RETHINKING THE CONNECTION OF METAPHOR AND TOPOS MAREIKE BUSS & JÖRG JOST RWTH AACHEN 1. Introduction Having survived the «death of rhetoric» (R. BARTHES 1985: 115), metaphor has become the centre of intensive research by philosophers of language and linguists in the twentieth cen- tury. Nowadays it is widely accepted that metaphor is not reducible to «a sort of happy extra trick with words» (I. A. RICHARDS [1936] 1964: 90), but is rather said to be a funda- mental principle of linguistic creativity with an invaluable cognitive function and heuristic potential. Topos or rather commonplace has, in contrast, a predominantly negative connota- tion in everyday and scientific language. Topos, which originally designated the place where to find the arguments for a speech, has become the cliché, the worn out phrase, or the stereotype. Nevertheless, there are numerous critical studies focusing on topoi in their heu- ristic and argumentative function. Aristotle’s Art of Rhetoric is one of the first and most important ‘textbooks’ for speech production. Following Aristotle, the purpose of rhetorical speech consists in persuading by argumentation. In this respect he defines rhetoric as «the faculty of discovering the possible means of persuasion in reference to any subject whatever.» (Rhetoric I, 1355b/14,2). Now, persuasion presupposes – as any perlocutionary act – that the utterances have been under- stood by the audience, in short: it presupposes (text) comprehension.1 When analysing the first three phases of rhetoric – heuresis, taxis and lexis – two features in particular stand out on account of the role they play in argumentation: topos and metaphor, which are treated in the heuresis and the lexis.2 Metaphor works in a heuristic and aesthetic manner, while topos operates in a heu- ristic and logical manner. -

Arsenokoités and Malakos: Meanings and Consequences by Dale B. Martin The New Testament provides little ammunition to those wishing to condemn modern homosexuality. Compared to the much more certain condemnations of anger, wealth (sometimes anything but poverty), adultery, or disobedience of wives and children, the few passages that might be taken as condemning homosexuality are meager. It is not surprising, therefore, that the interpretation of two mere words has commanded a disproportionate amount of attention. Both words, arsenokoités and malakos, occur in a vice list in 1 Cor. 6:9, and arsenokoités recurs in 1 Tim. 1:10. Although the translation of these two words has varied through the years, in the twentieth century they have often been taken to refer to people who engage in homosexual, or at least male homosexual, sex, and the conclusion sometimes then follows that the New Testament or Paul, condemns homosexual "activity." Usually the statement is accompanied by a shrugged-shoulder expression, as if to say, I'm not condemning homosexuality! I'm just reading the Bible. It's there in the text. Such protestations of objectivity, however, become untenable when examined closely. By analyzing ancient meanings of the terms, on the one hand, and historical changes in the translation of the terms on the other, we discover that interpretations of arsenokoités and malakos as condemning modern homosexuality have been driven more by ideological interests in marginalizing gay and lesbian people than by the general strictures of historical criticism. In the end, the goal of this chapter is not mere historical or philological accuracy. -

Luck and Good Fortune in the EudemianEthics Kent Johnson Recentlythere has beensome discussion of Aristotle's treatmentof good for- tune(£\m>x;{a) in the penultimatechapter of the EudemianEthics. I Thereare two claims about this chapterI wish to challenge.One maintainsthat the use of the word tUXll (usuallytranslated as 'luck' or 'chance')in the EE is 'quite different' from Aristotle's theoretical discussion of luck, found in the Physics (Woods 1992,67). The other claim is that good fortune is a subspeciesof luck (Kenny 1992,ch. 5, esp.71 and 75). In challengingthese two views,I hopeto developan accountof Aristotle's true intent in this chapter.In the first part of this article I considerthe notion of luck asit is presentedin the Physicsand then argue that the discussionof luck in the EE accordswith this. In the secondpart I arguethat by the end of his discussionof good fortune in the EE, Aristotle doesnot consider good fortune to be any kind of luck at all. I. Instead, 'chanceoccurrences have the featurethat they fall underno law that holds uni- versallyor for the most part under the descriptionunder which theyare correctly said to occur by chance,though they will havesome explanation under another description'(166). -

TAYLOR FIRST TRANSLATED FROM Arabic into Latin in the early thirteenth century, the philosophical works of Averroes were initially respected as valuable aids to understanding the true philosophy of Aristotle. William of Auvergne, Bishop of Paris and author of a philosophically astute theological synthesis of Greek and Arabic thought with Christian doctrine, openly expressed his appreciation with praise for Averroes. But by the mid-thirteenth century many of Averroes' teachings were under attack with his conceptions of human nature and separate immaterial intellect the subject of sharply focussed and heated argumentative assaults by Aquinas, Albert and others3 Their arguments were not primarily theological but rather philosophical criticisms which charged that Averroes, Drafts of this paper were presented at a conference sponsored by the International Society for the History of Arabic and Islamic Science and Philosophy at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, March 28, 1996, and at the annual meeting of the Medieval Academy of America in Toronto, Canada, April 19, 1997. BLUMENTHAL Emory Univeristy, Atlanta, GA 30322 The Teaching and the Text So that the ordinary Jew have an informed view of creation as a step toward true conviction about God, Maimonides devotes chapter three of "Hillscot yesode hattoriih" of the Mifoe Torah to an exposition of medieval astrophysics. The system he expounds has several traits that are strange to modern ears: first, it is geocentric; second, the heavenly bodies do not move by themselves in space but are embedded in transparent spheres which move; third, there is no empty space at all between these spheres; and fourth, Aristotelian physics demanded a system with circular uniform movement about a single fixed center. However, since the actually observed motions of the heavenly bodies do not fit this model, ancient and medieval astrophysicists invented a complicated series of spheres-within-spheres to account for the actual phenomena. This attempt to "save the phenomena," as Simplicius put it, seems very artificial to us, particularly since we now know it to have been a useless undertaking. We reject geocentrism, we accept the idea of space, and we are not bound by the idealist definitions of motion in Aristotelian physics. Maimonides, however, accepted all this and, as we shall see, took an important place in the extended fight over which of the explanations available to him was the correct one. 1 I. Lamp, Co-Chair Maureen Daly Goggin ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2016 ABSTRACT "Bringing-before-the-eyes": Visuality and Audience in Greek Rhetoric examines how Greek rhetorical theories are understood through the lens of visuality and the ways in which orators accounted for audience knowledges and expectations in the creation of rhetorical texts and performances. Through a close reading of Greek rhetorical texts from the classical period, I develop three heuristics for analyzing the ways in which rhetoricians invite and encourage visualized images through rhetorical practice. By exploring (1) language cues that orators use to signal visualization, (2) the ways in which shared cultural memories and ideas allow orators to call upon standardized images, and (3) the influence of stylistic choices and audience emotions related to the vividness of rhetorical images, I argue that it is possible to analyze the ways in which classical Greek orators understood and employed visual elements in their rhetorical performances. I then conduct an analysis of the visual aspects of Demosthenes' On the Embassy using these heuristics to demonstrate the ways in which these three aspects of visuality are intertwined and contribute to a greater understanding of the relationship between the verbal and the visual in rhetorical theory. -

Cloth $34.95 Reviewed by Ruth Glasner Hebrew University, Mount Scopus [email protected] Averroes (Ibn Rushd), ‘the commentator’, wrote short, middle, and long commentaries on Aristotle’s texts—short and middle on almost all the treatises and long on five (viz Posterior Analytics, Physics, De caelo, De anima, and Metaphysics). The De anima was undoubtedly one of the most influential texts in the Middle Ages. Of Averroes’ three commentaries on this text, we have a relatively new edition of the short commentary by Salvador Gomez Nogales from 1985, a critical edition of the Latin translation of the long commentary by F. Stuart Crawford from 1953 (the Arabic is no longer extant), and now the long-awaited, annotated, critical edition with an English translation of the middle commentary by Alfred L. Ivry. Professor Ivry is certainly the best qualified scholar to undertake this task and the result, as far as I can judge, leaves nothing to be desired. His edition and translation set the highest standard and can serve as a model for anyone who works on a medieval text. The notes reflect Ivry’s wide and deep erudition in Greek, Arabic, and Hebrew philosophy; and they provide everything that the reader expects to find in notes and much more. The book includes an Arabic-Hebrew- Greek-Latin glossary, a very rich bibliography, and good indices. -

Paper presented at ‘International Conference 2013 – Rhetoric in Europe’, 9-13.10.2013 Contributor: Erik Bengtson (Uppsala University, Uppsala) E-mail: [email protected] Keywords: doxa, epistemology, Barthes, Bourdieu, Heidegger, Amossy, Rosengren, Hariman The Birth of rhetorical theory in ancient Greece has been described as founded on a conflict between doxa and episteme, between rhetorical knowledge – opinion – and philosophical knowledge – truth. In this presentation I will describe how the concept of doxa has been used by Martin Heidegger, Roland Barthes and Pierre Bourdieu to formulate a view on knowledge – and also how these views have been further developed by later and more explicitly rhetorical thinkers such as Robert Hariman, Ruth Amossy and Mats Rosengren. The ambition is not to deepen the understanding of any one of these highly individual thinkers – but to formulate the core of their views and treat them as being in a conceptual discussion with each other even when that historically was not the case. Through this process I hope to formulate an understanding of different alignments of the concept of doxa – and present a modern discussion on rhetoric and knowledge founded on a tradition of European continental philosophy. Martin Heidegger The argument on doxa in Heidegger is closely related to his search for the meaning of Being; in that context doxa is given a central role in explaining the human position. Heidegger’s understanding of doxa has been linked to Husserl, but the explicit historical reference is to a pre-Socratic understanding of the concept. Heidegger does not ally himself with the early rhetorical theorists, but describes Plato and the sophists as equally to blame for the diminishing of doxa to mere opinion.
