Scotus on Action for the Blackwell Companion to the Philosophy of Action The category of action Action is one of the ten categories. Scotus holds that the division of contingent being into the categories is both sufficient and immediate: sufficient in the sense that there are no other categories, and immediate in the sense that no two or more of the categories fall under some still more generic category.1 In arguing for the distinctness and irreducibility of action as a category, Scotus focuses on why action (along with its correlative category, passion) is not to be subsumed under the category of relation. One might suppose that there is nothing more to the action of, say, heating than the relation between the active power that causes heat and the passive recipient of that heat, but that would be a mistake. For one thing, even in the case of heating more is required for there to be an action than merely the relation between the agent and patient; there must also be something that actualizes the active power. More crucially, there are some actions that do not involve any relation. When an action remains within the agent, there is no relation to any passion, because the agent does not cause any passion.2 An action that remains within the agent is called an immanent action; one that “passes through” or “goes out from” the agent is called a transeunt action. Transeunt actions produce something – some form – in a patient; this form is called the terminus of the action. The terminus of a transeunt action, by contrast, is not a form produced by the action, but the object with which the action is concerned. -

His model explained • variation in brightness of planets • changes in angular speed Ptolemy (AD 100 – c. 170): Almagest summarized ancient ideas about solar system. He himself proposed “equant point”: eccentric point about which planet moved with constant angular speed. Not true uniform circular motion, but explained data better. Ptolemaic universe (Equant point suppressed) • Note: this picture puts planets at a distance relative to Earth corresponding to our modern knowledge, but Ptolemaic system did not predict order of planets (or care!) • Exception: inner planets had to have orbits that kept them between Earth and Sun • Why epicycles? The book extends over five chapters and includes a preface, an epilogue and a bibliography. Philoponus attempts a double determination of place. He distinguishes between the place which is void, three-dimensional extension that is ontological different from bodies, and the concept of place that is filled by bodies. Philoponus wishes to redefine the relationship between place and body and he underlines the ontological difference that a bodiless extension should have from a bodily extension. The thesis also focuses on Philoponus’ critique of Aristotle’s definition of place and the Peripatetic tradition (Eudemus, Themistius) regarding the place of the heavens. The book concludes that, Philoponus’ strategy in the digressions of the commentary, but also in certain parts of his exegeses, can be seen in three stages: first, he repudiates the cogency of Aristotle’s and Themistius’ critique to the concept of local extension; second, he attacks the Aristotelian definition of place by showing its weaknesses and inconsistencies with the nature of things; and third, he establishes his own theory of place. -

Created on 24 December 2006 at 20.51 hours page 1 Avoiding the Void: Avicenna on the Impossibility of Circular Motion in a Void* Jon McGinnis The topic of the void was of significant philosophical and scientific importance in the ancient and medieval world. Some, such as the atomists, maintained that the void was essential if one were to explain motion. Others, such as Aristotle, argued that the exis- tence of the void would absolutely preclude the possibility of motion. Moreover, there were disputes concerning even how to characterize the void. Thus the atomists claimed that interstitial voids were dispersed throughout every body and existed alongside bo- dies in an infinite space. Others, such as the Stoics, held that all bodies were localized in a plenum that was itself situated in an extra-cosmic, infinite void. Still others, such as the Neoplatonist John Philoponus, thought that the void was finite, and although as a matter of fact it is never devoid of a body, it at least is capable of existing independent of any body. The above roughly provides the gamut of positions concerning the void as it reached the medieval Arabic philosopher Avicenna ( 370–428/ 980–1037). In one form or another, Avicenna was aware of the various moves and counter-moves associated with the notion of the void. Like Aristotle, he maintained that the existence of the void would absolutely preclude the possibility of motion. His arguments in some cases simply rehearse those of Aristotle; in other places they expand on the thought of Aristotle in order to respond to new threats that arose after Aristotle’s own time; and in certain situations Avicenna constructs new arguments against the void used neither by Aristotle nor, from what we can gather, Aristotle’s later Greek commentators. -

Phoronomy: space, construction, and mathematizing motion Marius Stan With his chapter, Phoronomy, Kant defies even the seasoned interpreter of his philosophy of physics.1 Exegetes have given it little attention, and un- derstandably so: his aims are opaque, his turns in argument little motivated, and his context mysterious, which makes his project there look alienating. I seek to illuminate here some of the darker corners in that chapter. Specifi- cally, I aim to clarify three notions in it: his concepts of velocity, of compo- site motion, and of the construction required to compose motions. I defend three theses about Kant. 1) his choice of velocity concept is ul- timately insufficient. 2) he sided with the rationalist faction in the early- modern debate on directed quantities. 3) it remains an open question if his algebra of motion is a priori, though he believed it was. I begin in § 1 by explaining Kant’s notion of phoronomy and its argu- ment structure in his chapter. In § 2, I present four pictures of velocity cur- rent in Kant’s century, and I assess the one he chose. My § 3 is in three parts: a historical account of why algebra of motion became a topic of early modern debate; a synopsis of the two sides that emerged then; and a brief account of his contribution to the debate. Finally, § 4 assesses how general his account of composite motion is, and if it counts as a priori knowledge. -

In the last decades, the existence of the Soul has been seriously considered by Quantum Physics. It has been frequently described as a body of unknown energy coupled to human body by means of a mutual interaction. The Quantum Physics shows that energy is quantized, i.e., it has discrete values that are defined as energy levels. Thus, along the life of a person, the energy of its soul is characterized by several quantum levels of energy. Here, we show by means of application of specific electromagnetic radiations on the human body, that it is possible to revert the energy of the soul to previous energy levels. This process can have several therapeutic applications. -

Robinson erhaps as early as the eighth century, in the Islamic East, the traditional Sanskrit tales about the Buddha’s enlightenment—about his recognition of his own mortality and training with an ascetic monk—were translated into Persian and Arabic. The Arabic version, entitled Bilawhar wa-Būdhāsaf, then served as Pthe basis for renderings into Georgian, Greek, Latin, Hebrew, and a long list of European vernacular languages.1 These renderings were, more often than not, not straightforward translations but adaptations, often introducing significant modifications into the frame narrative. The Greek version, for example, transformed Bilawhar—an ascetic teacher—into Barlaam, a saintly Christian monk, and his disciple Budasaf or Yudasaf—the Buddha—into Joasaph or Josaphat, a saintly Christian Neophyte.2 The Hebrew version is no less surprising than the Greek, when Bilawhar be- comes not a Jewish sage but a Neoplatonic philosopher, and his 1 For the Arabic and Persian versions, see D.
