Scholars agree that, in general, an animate possessor predicts the s- genitive while an inanimate possessor predicts the of-construction. However, the current literature rarely discusses noun compounds, such as the table leg, which also express possessive relationships. However, pragmatically and syntactically, a compound cannot be considered as a true possessive construction. Thus, this paper will examine why some compounds still display possessive semantics epiphenomenally. The noun compounds that imply possession seem to exhibit relationships prototypical of inalienable possession such as body part, part whole, and spatial relationships. Additionally, the juxtaposition of the possessor and possessum in the compound construction is reminiscent of inalienable possession in other languages. Therefore, this paper proposes that inalienability, a phenomenon not thought to be relevant in English, actually imbues noun compounds whose components exhibit an inalienable relationship with possessive semantics. -

SEMANTIC ANALYSIS ON SENSE OF AMBIGUITY IN THE HEADLINE PRINTED THE JAKARTA POST PUBLISHED ON MARCH 13TH– APRIL 13TH , 2015 Erisa Kurniati Batanghari University [email protected] ABSTRACT This research was aim to find out the ambiguity which found in the headline of The Jakarta Post based on semantic analysis first classify it which one the most ambiguous (word, phrase or sentence), then the last interpret the sense of ambiguity based on semantic analysis. The researcher collected 100 data of headlines then reduced it into 10 data purposively the most ambiguous. There are 6 data of ambiguity interpreted into two interpretations and 4 data of ambiguity interpreted into three interpretations. From 10 data, the data researcher found a lexical ambiguity in the headlines of The Jakarta Post published on March 13th – April 13th, 2015. Key words: Semantic Analysis, Sense of Ambiguity. A. Background of the Study Nowadays, there are many ways to communicate with other due to the developments of technology. There are many media, whether electronic or printed media to share information and to keep in touch with the other. People can get the information about the development of the world and everything happens in a day from electronic and printed media. Newspaper, especially daily newspaper, has a big contribution for the people to get information about local or international events everyday because the news and information are up to date and accurate. As a consequence, there are many daily newspapers published in Indonesia and one of the daily English Newspaper is The Jakarta Post. Generally, people communicate perfectly and completely. -

[email protected] Abstract Linguistic ambiguity is rendered as a problematic issue since it hinders precise language processing. Ambiguity leads to a confusion of ideas in the reader’s mind when he struggles to decide on the precise meaning intended behind an utterance. In the literature relevant to the topic, no clear classification of linguistic ambiguity can be traced, for what is considered syntactic ambiguity, for some linguists, falls under pragmatic ambiguity for others; what is rendered as lexical ambiguity for some linguists is perceived as semantic ambiguity for others and still as unambiguous to few. The problematic issue, hence, can be recapitulated in the abstruseness hovering around what is linguistic ambiguity, what is not, and what comprises each type of ambiguity in language. Model Completeness and Relative Decidability Jennifer Chubb, Russell Miller,∗ & Reed Solomon March 5, 2019 Abstract We study the implications of model completeness of a theory for the effectiveness of presentations of models of that theory. It is im- mediate that for a computable model A of a computably enumerable, model complete theory, the entire elementary diagram E(A) must be decidable. We prove that indeed a c.e. theory T is model complete if and only if there is a uniform procedure that succeeds in deciding E(A) from the atomic diagram ∆(A) for all countable models A of T . Moreover, if every presentation of a single isomorphism type A has this property of relative decidability, then there must be a procedure with succeeds uniformly for all presentations of an expansion (A,~a) by finitely many new constants. We end with a conjecture about the situation when all models of a theory are relatively decidable. 1 Introduction The broad goal of computable model theory is to investigate the effective arXiv:1903.00734v1 [math.LO] 2 Mar 2019 aspects of model theory. Here we will carry out exactly this process with the model-theoretic concept of model completeness. This notion is well-known and has been widely studied in model theory, but to our knowledge there has never been any thorough examination of its implications for computability in structures with the domain ω. We now rectify this omission, and find natural and satisfactory equivalents for the basic notion of model completeness of a first-order theory. More Model Theory Notes Miscellaneous information, loosely organized. 1. Kinds of Models A countable homogeneous model M is one such that, for any partial elementary map f : A ! M with A ⊆ M finite, and any a 2 M, f extends to a partial elementary map A [ fag ! M. As a consequence, any partial elementary map to M is extendible to an automorphism of M. Atomic models (see below) are homogeneous. A prime model of T is one that elementarily embeds into every other model of T of the same cardinality. Any theory with fewer than continuum-many types has a prime model, and if a theory has a prime model, it is unique up to isomorphism. Prime models are homogeneous. On the other end, a model is universal if every other model of its size elementarily embeds into it. Recall a type is a set of formulas with the same tuple of free variables; generally to be called a type we require consistency. The type of an element or tuple from a model is all the formulas it satisfies. One might think of the type of an element as a sort of identity card for automorphisms: automorphisms of a model preserve types. A complete type is the analogue of a complete theory, one where every formula of the appropriate free variables or its negation appears. Types of elements and tuples are always complete. A type is principal if there is one formula in the type that implies all the rest; principal complete types are often called isolated. A trivial example of an isolated type is that generated by the formula x = c where c is any constant in the language, or x = t(¯c) where t is any composition of appropriate-arity functions andc ¯ is a tuple of constants. -

Modality and the Semantics-Pragmatics Interface Anna Papafragou Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Ph.D. University College London 1998 (LONDON) To my family with love and gratitude Abstract This thesis explores certain aspects of the structure of lexical semantics and its interaction with pragmatic processes of utterance comprehension, using as a case-study a sample of the English modal verbs. Contrary to previous polysemy-based accounts, I propose and defend a unitary semantic account of the English modals, and I give a relevance-theoretic explanation of the construction of their admissible (mainly, root and epistemic) contextual interpretations. Departing from previous accounts of modality, I propose a link between epistemic modality and metarepresentation, and treat the emergence of epistemic modal markers as a result of the development of the human theory of mind. In support of my central contention that the English modals are semantically univocal, I reanalyse a range of arguments employed by previous polysemy-based approaches. These arguments involve the distributional properties of the modals, their relationship to truth-conditional content, the status of so-called speech-act modality, and the historical development of epistemic meanings: it turns out that none of these domains can offer reasons to abandon the univocal semantic analysis of the English modals. Furthermore, I argue that the priority of root over epistemic meanings in language acquisition is predicted by the link between epistemic modality and metarepresentation. Finally, data from a cognitive disorder (autism) are considered in the light of the metarepresentation hypothesis about epistemic modality. The discussion of modality has a number of implications for the concept of polysemy. -

ROBERT C. STALNAKER* A THEORY OF CONDITIONALS I. INTRODUCTION A conditional sentence expresses a proposition which is a function of two other propositions, yet not one which is a truth function of those prop ositions. I may know the truth values of "Willie Mays played in the American League" and "Willie Mays hit four hundred" without knowing whether or not Mays. would have hit four hundred if he had played in the American League. This fact has tended to puzzle, displease, or delight philosophers, and many have felt that it is a fact that calls for some comment or explanation. It has given rise to a number of philosophical problems; I shall discuss three of these. My principal concern will be with what has been called the logical problem of conditionals, a problem that frequently is ignored or dismissed by writers on conditionals and counterfactuals. This is the task of describing the formal properties of the conditional function: a function, usually represented in English by the words "if ... then", taking ordered pairs of propositions into propositions. I shall explain informally and defend a solution, presented more rigorously elsewhere, to this problem.l The second issue - the one that has dominated recent discussions of con· trary-to-fact conditionals - is the pragmatic problem of counterfactuals. This problem derives from the belief, which I share with most philosophers writing about this topic, that the formal properties of the conditional function, together with all of the facts, may not be sufficient for determining the truth value of a counterfactual; that is, different truth values of conditional state ments may be consistent with a single valuation of all nonconditional state ments. -

We flesh out this idea in a grammar that compositionally derives the truth conditions of donkey sentences containing conditionals and relative clauses, including those involving modals and proportional quantifiers. For example, an indefinite in the antecedent of a conditional can bind a donkey pronoun in the consequent by taking scope over the entire conditional. Our grammar manages continuations using three independently motivated type-shifters, Lift, Lower, and Bind. Empirical support comes from donkey weak crossover (*He beats it if a farmer owns a donkey): in our system, a quantificational binder need not c-command a pronoun that it binds, but must be evaluated before it, so that donkey weak crossover is just a special case of weak crossover. We compare our approach to situation-based E-type pronoun analyses, as well as to dynamic accounts such as Dynamic Predicate Logic. A new ‘tower’ notation makes derivations considerably easier to follow and manipulate than some previous grammars based on continuations.
