The Turtle Diaries For nature lovers, an encounter with sea turtles in KwaZulu-Natal is a magical moment

AN ENCOUNTER WITH the quiet and docile turtle should be on everybody's December "to do" list and the magnifi cent Elephant Coast, stretching from St Lucia to Kosi Bay is known as 'turtle country'. Turtles are generally secretive animals and are therefore not regularly sighted. Turtle tours for guests at lodges like the Thonga Beach Lodge and Kosi Forest Lodge should provide this rare opportunity to gain a greater understanding of these fascinating creatures. There are a number of different turtles that are found in the Zululand region of South Africa namely the Leatherback Turtle, Loggerhead, Olive Ridley, Green Turtle and the Hawkbill. However, only the loggerhead and leatherback turtles breed in these waters and lay their eggs on these shores. Female turtles nest at high tide on moonless nights in summer and lay 6 - 9 clutches of eggs. Each clutch contains approximately 100 -120 eggs. During January and February the baby turtles head back to the sea. To actually sight these gorgeous baby turtles is absolutely awe-inspiring.

SABRINA OCEAN CHALLENGE Robberg Beach End, Plettenberg Bay 28-29 December This charity event is named after a little girl who died at the age of 7 because of a rare bone disease. Her parents - Tony and Suzy Lubner - created the Sabrina Love Foundation and started the event in 2004 with 24 people swimming from Robberg Beach End to Main Beach (6km). Sabrina loved the colour pink - which resulted in an entire town being branded pink over the days of the event. This year the organisers expect 2600 participants over the two days of the challenge. Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff said her country is willing to invest strategically in Mozambique to forge a strong partnership between the government and the Brazilian companies which are operating in the Mozambican market. MOTOR SHOWS are a bizarre thing. You get tens of promotional bags for all your free brochures, as much fi nger food as you can eat, a surprising lack of seating so there’s nowhere to ever stop and rest your weary limbs, but more importantly you get to see the car industry blow the rest of its year’s marketing budget in one fi nal hooray. The stands put up by the manufacturers are mostly imported from overseas under strict guidelines from HQ and rumour mills say some cost as much as R30-million to ship and assemble. The manufacturers want you, the buying public, to leave the show with their brand image held highest in your mind. But with all the brands fi ghting for your attention, hosted under one roof of course, this can be a diffi cult act to pull off. Here are the manufacturers, concept cars and soon to be launched new cars that made the biggest splash.

Toyota The best stand and widest array of new concept and production cars must go to Toyota this year.
