Last season’s varsity returned a total of four points from the previous season but still managed to go .500 in the GMC and fi nish with an 8-15 record. When Rooks arrived at Wyoming in 2012, the Cowboys were coming off a 2-19 season and two years later they posted a record of 22-4, had won the Cin- cinnati Hills Conference championship, and had progressed to the district fi nals of the division II tournament. His contributions to this success were acknowledged by press and peers. He was named the Cincinnati Enquirer D-2 coach of the year and voted the coach of the year by both the District 16 Coaches Association, and the Cincinnati Hills League coaches.Prior to becoming a head coach Rooks served his apprenticeship at Moeller high school. He coached the Moeller freshmen for eight years, and for his fi nal seven years also served as a varsity assistant to Moeller head coach Carl Kremer. He was an integral part of the Moeller staff when the Crusaders won the 2007 Ohio Division 1 championship. Rooks went directly into teaching and coaching following an outstanding college playing career. He played four seasons for Bethel College (2000-2004) where he still ranks third in career scoring with 2183 points and is high on the Bethel career lists for both assists and rebounds.Rooks is currently teaching physical education at Endeavor Elementary School in Lakota. • Cardinal Tradition Louisville Basketball
Cardinal Tradition Louisville Basketball Louisville Basketball Tradition asketball is special to Kentuckians. The sport B permeates everyday life from offices to farm- lands, from coal mines to neighborhood drug stores. It is more than just a sport played in the cold winter months. It is a source of pride filled year-round with anticipation, hope and celebration. Kentuckians love their basketball, and the tradition-rich University of Louisville program has supplied its fans with one of the nation’s finest products for decades. Legendary coach Bernard “Peck” Hickman, a Basketball Hall of Fame nominee, arrived on the UofL campus in 1944 to begin a remarkable string of 46 consecutive winning seasons. For 23 seasons, Hickman laid an impressive foundation for UofL. John Dromo, an assistant coach under Hickman for 19 years, continued the Louisville program in outstanding fashion following Hickman’s retirement. For 30 years, Denny Crum followed the same path of success that Hickman and Dromo both walked, guiding the Cardinals to even higher acclaim. Now, Coach Rick Pitino energized a re-emergence in building upon the rich UofL tradition in his 16 years, guiding the Cardinals to the 2013 NCAA championship, NCAA Final Fours in 2005 and 2012 and the NCAA Elite Eight five of the past 10 sea- sons. Among the Cardinals’ past successes include national championships in the NCAA (1980,1986, 2013), NIT (1956) and the NAIB (1948). UofL is Taquan Dean kisses the Freedom Hall floor Tremendous pride is taken in the tradition the only school in the nation to have claimed the after his final game as a Cardinal.

Page 1 of 2 Wednesday, November 19, 2003 Prof Blood and his 1920s Dream Teams The Honolulu Advertiser Section E, page 1 Wednesday, November 19, 2003 “PROF BLOOD AND THE WONDER TEAMS” by Charles “Chic” Hess; Newark Abbey Press, paperback, $21.95 and hardcover, $29.95 By Michael Tsai Before the Wizard of Westwood, there was the Grey Thatched Wizard. Before Bobby Knight and Bob Hurley, before Adolph Rupp and Phog Allen, before any of basketball’s greatest coaches ran so much as a three-man weave, a man named Blood gave a nascent sport shape, power and purpose. Ernest Blood coached the Passaic, N.J., high school “Wonder Teams” to 159 consecutive games from 1919 to 1925-a record that stands today. So why haven’t you heard of him? “Prof Blood is the most overlooked figure in basketball history,” says Kailua resident Charles “Chic” Hess, author of the recently released book “Prof Blood and the Wonder Teams.” “He’s a forgotten pioneer, and if he wasn’t in the (Basketball) Hall of Fame, he would have completely disappeared.” Blood helped create the old-school principles of ball movement, court awareness and recognition to which great basketball teams of every level still adhere today. The Wonder Teams’ record winning streak is still a source of pride in Passaic, but Blood and the unfortunate circumstances that surrounded his tenure faded into history decades ago. Hess first heard about Blood and his Wonder Teams growing up in hoops-obsessed Philadelphia. As he progressed from playing basketball in high school and college to coaching AAU and small college basketball-he won the NAIA District 29 Basketball Coach of the Year award in 1988 and 1989 as coach of Brigham Young University-Hawaii-Hess found himself more and more intrigued by the mythical figure with the unfathomable record.
