Chapter One The Decline and Fall of the Pirates Family The 1980–1985 Seasons ♦◊♦ As over forty-four thousand Pirates fans headed to Three Rivers Sta- dium for the home opener of the 1980 season, they had every reason to feel optimistic about the Pirates and Pittsburgh sports in general. In the 1970s, their Pirates had captured six divisional titles, two National League pennants, and two World Series championships. Their Steelers, after decades of futility, had won four Super Bowls in the 1970s, while the University of Pittsburgh Panthers led by Heisman Trophy winner Tony Dorsett added to the excitement by winning a collegiate national championship in football. There was no reason for Pittsburgh sports fans to doubt that the 1980s would bring even more titles to the City of Champions. After the “We Are Family” Pirates, led by Willie Stargell, won the 1979 World Series, the ballclub’s goals for 1980 were “Two in a Row and Two Million Fans.”1 If the Pirates repeated as World Series champions, it would mark the first time that a Pirates team had accomplished that feat in franchise history. If two million fans came out to Three Rivers Stadium to see the Pirates win back-to-back World Series titles, it would 3 © 2017 University of Pittsburgh Press. The offseason after the 1979 World Series victory was a whirlwind of awards and honors, highlighted by World Series Most Valuable Player (MVP) Willie Stargell and Super Bowl MVP Terry Bradshaw of the Steelers appearing on the cover of the December 24, 1979, Sports Illustrated as corecipients of the magazine’s Sportsman of the Year Award.

I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.

  • Michael Loman
MICHAEL LOMAN PROFILE Michael Loman began his career in musical theatre as an actor and dancer. He appeared on Broadway in the musical Funny Girl and also in Peter Ustinov’s war satire The Unknown Soldier and His Wife. Michael also toured In many other musicals with stars such as Diahann Carroll and Godfrey Cambridge. Mr. Loman then decided to turn to comedy writing and his first job was for the acclaimed PBS series, The Great American Dream Machine. To expand job possibilities, Michael decided to write a spec script for Norman Lear’s hit television series Maude which starred Bea Arthur. That script got him an agent (The William Morris Agency) and his first jobs in television. Loman decided to travel out to Los Angeles to test his luck as a writer in television and he landed a job creating a new series for Universal on his first day in Hollywood. Unfortunately, that project didn’t make it. His next job was writing a script for Mel Brooks’ sitcom satire on Robin Hood entitled, “When Things Were Rotten.” As Loman was about to start the second draft of his script, the series was cancelled. But then some better news prevailed. His agent sent his spec Maude script to the Norman Lear company and they offered him a script on Lear’s hit series One Day at a Time. Mr. Lear, who reads all scripts for all of his series, wrote on Michael’s script “Michael Loman is a terrific writer.” Loman made a hundred copies of Lear’s remarks and sent them to everyone he had ever known.

Comedy or Tragedy? by Squonk Sure, everybody loves 30 Rock and The Office, but what about those poor misunderstood sitcoms that hardly had a chance to get off the ground? I’m planning a mini-marathon honoring some of them, but I still need a really good title for the event. Maybe you can help. The first seven puzzles below honor different failed sitcoms. The solution to each is an eight-letter word (or, in one case, a three-word phrase). Then use these answers in the final Scheduling puzzle. I hope these puzzles bring a bigger smile to your face than the original sitcoms did! Baby Bob (2002) Premise: Adam Arkin and Joely Fisher as first-time parents who discover their baby can talk Recent investigations in the CBS vault have uncovered synopses for several unaired episodes of the series. The titles of these episodes share a certain wordplay property with the series’ title. Figure out the titles, and you can then find two equal-length clues (of different sorts) leading to this puzzle’s final answer. 1. Bob tries to use parliamentary procedure to stage the overthrow of his parents. (6 6) 2. For a school science fair, Bob creates a volcano that spews martini garnishes. (5 4) 3. Bob dresses as a policeman when he visits his cousin, Old Macdonald. (7 2 1 4) 4. Bob sneezes. Loudly. (5 4) 5. Bob gets spun around by a cyclone. (7 6) 6.
