  • The Decline and Fall of the Pirates Family
Chapter One The Decline and Fall of the Pirates Family The 1980–1985 Seasons ♦◊♦ As over forty-four thousand Pirates fans headed to Three Rivers Sta- dium for the home opener of the 1980 season, they had every reason to feel optimistic about the Pirates and Pittsburgh sports in general. In the 1970s, their Pirates had captured six divisional titles, two National League pennants, and two World Series championships. Their Steelers, after decades of futility, had won four Super Bowls in the 1970s, while the University of Pittsburgh Panthers led by Heisman Trophy winner Tony Dorsett added to the excitement by winning a collegiate national championship in football. There was no reason for Pittsburgh sports fans to doubt that the 1980s would bring even more titles to the City of Champions. After the “We Are Family” Pirates, led by Willie Stargell, won the 1979 World Series, the ballclub’s goals for 1980 were “Two in a Row and Two Million Fans.”1 If the Pirates repeated as World Series champions, it would mark the first time that a Pirates team had accomplished that feat in franchise history. If two million fans came out to Three Rivers Stadium to see the Pirates win back-to-back World Series titles, it would 3 © 2017 University of Pittsburgh Press. The offseason after the 1979 World Series victory was a whirlwind of awards and honors, highlighted by World Series Most Valuable Player (MVP) Willie Stargell and Super Bowl MVP Terry Bradshaw of the Steelers appearing on the cover of the December 24, 1979, Sports Illustrated as corecipients of the magazine’s Sportsman of the Year Award.

I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.

OPENING OUR 14TH SEASON Issue # 138 NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA APRIL, 2006 Zephyrs Season Helps Bring Sense of Normalcy By Bill Catalanello ot quite as Big, not nearly as Easy: that’s our hometown these days. If you live in New Orleans area, you’ve gone through an Noff-season like no other. If you’re a baseball fan from the Crescent City, you’re probably ready for some hardball right about now, and not the kind played by the insurance companies. The 2005 season never had a proper ending, as most in the area, including the Zephyrs, fled ahead of Hurricane Katrina. The team embarked by bus on the final road trip of the season. The rest of us scattered to the north and the west, anywhere away from the destruction. Most of us were away from Signs of the times: home for at least weeks while the city drained and The Zephyrs’ new scoreboard (above) services were slowly restored. The 2006 season begins begins to take shape. with optimism and the spirit of rebuilding. After the Afternoon shadows during a spring storm, the Zephyrs pledged early and often to stay and play in their home town and take part in the Tulane baseball game (below) reveal rebuilding effort. Some residents have completed the skeleton of a roof in progress repairs and rebuilding, some are still very much in the process, and some have not even returned to the New Orleans area. The disaster touched everyone living here, but to varying degrees. For those of us in the rebuilding mode, anything and everything that resembles our pre-K normalcy is a welcome sight.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES THURSDAY, JUNE 22, 2017 A FIRST HALF TO REMEMBER Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Chris Sale fanned 10 batters in a win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday. The dominant left-hander now has 146 strikeouts on the season over his 15 starts, including 10 games with at least 10 strikeouts. The 28-year-old Florida native is now 9-3 on the season with a 2.85 ERA over 107.1 innings pitched, setting up a likely sixth All-Star Game selection. According to Elias, since the mound was set at its current distance in 1893, the only other pitchers to reach 10 double-digit strikeout games in as few games into a season as Sale were Hall of Famers Pedro Martinez in 1999 (also 15th game) and Randy Johnson in 2000 (12th game) and 2001 (14th game). With just over two weeks remaining before the All-Star break, Sale has a chance to reach the 170-strikeout plateau within the season’s fi rst half. That has not been accomplished since teammates Curt Schilling (186) and Johnson (171) both did so in 2002. Overall, the feat has been done just 20 times in MLB history by 11 diff erent pitchers. Seven of the 11 pitchers are currently in the Hall of Fame. Sale would become the third Boston pitcher to accomplish the feat, joining Roger Clemens (1988) and Martinez (1999).
