    10 Isabelle Levesque Atlantic Salmon Fly Tying from past to present Without pretending to be an historian, I can state that the evolution of salmon flies has been known for over two hundred years. Over that time, and long before, many changes have come to the art of fly tying; the materials, tools, and techniques we use today are not what our predecessors used. In order to understand the modern art, a fly tier ought to know a bit of the evolution and history of line fishing, fly fishing, and the art of tying a fly. Without going into too much detail, here is a brief overview of the evolution and the art of angling and fly tying. I will start by separating the evolution of fly tying into three categories: fly fishing, the Victorian era, and the contemporary era. Historians claim that the first scriptures on flies were from Dame Juliana Berners’s Book of Saint Albans (1486), which incorporated an earlier work, A Treatise of Fishing with an Angle. The Benedictine nun wrote on outdoor recreation, the origin of artificial flies, and fly-fishing equipment. This book was updated in 1496 with additional fishing techniques. In the early 1500s, a Spanish author by the name of Fernando Basurto promoted fishing among sportsmen with hisLittle Treatise on Fishing; but the first masterpiece of English literature on fishing wasThe Compleat Angler by Izaak Walton and Charles Cotton, published in 1653. Walton was a passionate fisherman who wanted to promote fishing as an activity in communion with nature. Unlike modern books about fishing, Walton’s did not specify equipment or techniques to use in particular fishing situations.

    Fishing & other Field Sports Fishing 2 Other Field Sports 58 Henry Sotheran Ltd 2 Sackville Street Piccadilly London W1S 3DP tel: 020 7439 6151 email: [email protected] web: sotherans.co.uk 1. ‘Arthur Holmes’ Box of Delights’ [Twelve hand- painted wooden dioramas depicting hunting, shooting and fishing scenes]. 1920. £7,500 A collection, complete in all its parts, of 12 individual hand-crafted, and numbered, three-dimensional landscaped scenes, or dioramas (all bases 163 x 95 x 10mm; the tallest insert 220mm), which are hand- painted throughout on all visible surfaces (including the oval bases, and sides) and composed of multi- layered scenery and characters which slot into the base together with exquisite detachable fishing rods with twine, floats and bait, landing birds, and even an angler’s satchel with leather strap; the whole fashioned in wood and featuring a series of figures (adults and children) engaged in traditional rural pursuits of hunting, shooting and fishing; each signed on the base, in ink, by the maker Arthur Holmes, numbered, and dated 1920 throughout; all contained within a carefully constructed custom-made wooden slatted and lidded box with metal clasp (no longer functioning) and including internal compartments and trays with leather lifting tabs configured with outlines to indicate the storage plan. This lovingly, and painstakingly, hand-crafted personal artefact is testament to the great skill and patience of the creator and is a beautiful production that would not look out of place in a museum. Unfortunately we have no provenance to offer beyond the maker’s (Arthur Holmes) signature throughout, as it originated from a provincial fair, with no associated history.

Department of ENGLISH The University of British Columbia Vancouver 8, Canada Abstract The co-purposes of this thesis are to demonstrate why angling literature qualifies as a subject worthy of serious study, and to explore the nature of the tradition of angling literature of the nineteenth century. Although the focus is on nineteenth century works, many earlier writings have been discussed. Of the pre-1800 authors discussed, the most important is Izaak Walton—The Father of Anglers. It is believed that the thesis demonstrates that Walton greatly influenced his followers. To identify "The Walton Tradition in the Nineteenth Century," and to trace Walton's impact on nineteenth century writers on angling, extensive reading was required. Of 150-odd books on angling examined, more than 100 belong to the nineteenth century.
