The Fly Fisher’s Guide, Illustrated with Coloured Plates, Representing Upwards of Forty of the Most Useful Flies, Accurately Copied from Nature. viii, 150 pp. 7 hand-colored plates of flies; colored frontispiece of a fish. (8vo) 20.5x12 cm (8x4¾”) early full black polished calf, borders in blind and gilt, spine gilt. First Octavo Edition. Liverpool: G.F. Harris’s Widow and Brothers, 1816 One of the earliest books to include color plates of tied flies. Preceded by a quarto edition of only 12 copies. This copy annotated in an early hand on the front and rear blanks and various blank spaces within with passages from other angling texts. Also, the rear of each plates with descriptions of further flies and the material needed for their construction. Bookplate of John Simmen McCormac. Early ownership signatures of John Faith (1834) and G.F. Allan (1857). Bind rubbed; foxing and finger soiling within; very good, clearly the copy of a serious angler. A Week on the Jupiter River, Anticosti Island. 45 pp. Illustrated with mounted photograph on page proceeding text, showing a long row of fish tied up all in a one day’s catch on the Jupiter River. 23.2x15.4 cm (9¼x6”), black paper covered boards, paper cover label. No. 93 of 100 copies. [No place]: Privately Printed, 1934 “Baldemec” is a composite name, made up of Sir V. Bessborough, A.L. “Tommy,” D., Eric M., and Eddy C; who were all members of the fishing party at Anticosti Island in 1934. “A salmon fishing book of great charm and rarity...The total number of salmon for the week for the party was 192. The book is most interesting because it contains accounts of the same trip by all 5 members of the party - they vary widely in style and content from straight facts and figures to lyrical and poetic evocations. The last piece...is particularly fine...” - from Charles Wood, in “More Privately Printed Books on Atlantic Salmon Fishing,” third in a series of articles in the Atlantic Salmon Journal). Inscribed on the front free endpaper by Sir V. Bessburough: “Though these fish may seem to you but minnows, the story of our trip may none the less amuse you.” The identities of the members of the fishing party are exposed on the page containing their initials, also in Bessburough’s hand. With Engravings of Salmon & Trout Flies Shewing the Process of the Gentle Craft as Taught in the Pages. With Descriptions of Flies for the Season of the Year as They Come Out on the Water. Rewritten & Revised by the Author Blacker, Himself, Fishing Tackle Maker.... v-xii, viii, 259 pp. Engraved title-page. Illustrated with 21 engraved plates, 17 of which are hand-colored; tissue guards. (12mo) original blindstamped green cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt. Rewritten and revised by the author. London: 1855 Originally issued as Art of Angling in 1842, then as Blacker’s Catechism of Fly-making in 1843. This edition contains splendid plates depicting flies, which are marvelously detailed and brightly hand colored. Earlier editions contained mounted flies. Westwood & Satchell call for the frontispiece to also be hand-colored, it is uncolored in this copy. Westwood & Satchell p.33. Slight lean to spine, lightly worn at extremities, front hinge cracking, bookplate; light foxing, previous owner’s notes on title page in ink and in pencil on rear endpaper; very good. (1200/1800) Lot 4 Page 2 5. [Bowden-Smith, Richard]. Fly-Fishing in Salt and Fresh Water. With Six Plates, Representing Artificial Flies, Etc. viii, 74 + [2] ad pp. Smaller 8 pp publisher’s catalog inserted at rear. Half-title. With 6 lithographed plates, 5 of them hand-colored. (8vo) 22.2x14.2 cm (8¾x5½”), original blindstamped green cloth, spine lettered in gilt. First Edition. London: John Van Voorst, 1851 Very nice copy of a scarce book, with reference to flies for sea-fishing, salmon fishing in Connemara, winter fly fishing, deep-line sea-fishing, etc. Westwood & Satchell p. 95. Spine ends frayed, light wear to extremities, small piece clipped from front free endpaper, bookplate; very good. (1000/1500) Lot 5 6. Bowlker, Charles.
