In absence of the information about those tyers I decided to proceed with what I had and over the next few years, if I could get the information on the others, I would consider releasing a second book. Never did I realize that it would take me six years to gather that information. During the six years I had the pleasure of personally meeting a number of the tyers. Sadly some of them are no longer with us. During the many meetings I had with the fly tyers, their families and friends I will never forget their kindness and generosity.

PAJOT* P.reface This paper describes the commercially viable off-shore fishing methods for catching known commercial resources available around Sri Lanka. Also the in-shore fishing methods such ::l.S bait fishery which are related and of prime importance for carrying out certain off-shore methods are described. This paper may serve as a background material for the description of fishing methods and to discussions on their various aspects connected with the operation of those fisheries. Introduction Fishing methods to be applied are determined by known commercially exploitable resources within operating range from a base. As discussed by Dr. Sivasubramaruam on the prevwus paper the Known commercmuy exploitable 1·esomces are of pelagic nature. Deep-sea demersal resources are stili unknown and no commercial scale fishery have even been done and should not be without further experimental investigation which would determine the future commercial value of such resomce· and indicate what vessel, gear technology should be used. As a result the fishing methods to be discussed are as follows : (1) Long lining for large pelagic species such as large Tuna (YeHow:fin, Bigeye), Shark, spearfish and others ; (2) Driftnetting for small and large Tuna species (Skipjack, YeUow:fin and others), shark, spearfish, etc. ; (3) Pole and line for small deep-sea pelagic species such as Skipjaclc, YeUowfi.n, Frigate mackerel, etc.; (4) Purse seining (small scale) for small pelagic species suitable as bait fish for pole and line and longline fisheries.

On April their fly fishing outfit was announced, there were cheers and 23 rd we held our 11 th Annual Rendezvous. This event is our tears of joy. I was glad to help out in a small way. major fund rising event and membership drive of the year. It was held at a new venue this year – Rivernook Campgrounds. We had a very nice small meadows area reserved and everything worked out very nicely. There’s a more detailed report on page 5 which includes pictures and the winners of our C & R Tourney. On May 14 th we held our famous Kids Academy at the Kernville Hatchery. 15 kids graduated after learning casting, knots, fly tying, entomology, conservation and catching. The kids were able to fish the hatchery and caught trout up to 5 pounds. The kids ended up getting wet from all the “splishing” and splashing from the big trout. Many of the kids caught trout on flies they tied earlier in the day, taught by Gary Applebee. All the kids had big smiles at the end of the day. There’s another more detailed report on the Kids Academy on page 6. nd On May 22 , I helped at the Casting for Recovery Retreat at Lake Arrowhead.

    IGFA International Flyfishing Rules Equipment Regulations A. Line Any type of fly line and backing may be used. The breaking strength of the fly line and backing are not restricted. B. Leader Leaders must conform to generally accepted fly fishing customs. A leader includes a class tippet and, optionally, a shock tippet. A butt or taper section between the fly line and the class tippet shall also be considered part of the leader and there are no limits on its length, material, or strength. A class tippet must be made of nonmetallic material and either attached directly to the fly or to the shock tippet if one is used. The class tippet must be at least 38.10 centimeters (15 inches) long (measured inside connecting knots). With respect to knotless, tapered leaders, the terminal 38.10 centimeters (15 inches) will also determine tippet class. There is no maximum length limitation. A shock tippet, not to exceed 30.48 centimeters (12 inches) in length, may be added to the class tippet and tied to the fly. It can be made of any type of material, and there is no limit on its breaking strength. The shock tippet is measured from the eye of the hook to the single strand of class tippet and includes any knots used to connect the shock tippet to the class tippet. In the case of a tandem hook fly, the shock tippet shall be measured from the eye of the leading hook. C. Rod Regardless of material used or number of sections, rods must conform and cast according to generally accepted fly fishing customs and practices.

The L T Caddis however was given the now recognized name ‘Klinkhåmer Special’ by his colleague Hans de Groot. Other tyers including Tomas Olsen & Roy Richardson are credited by Hans for similar solutions but this particular emerger pattern is Hans’ own work. Uses: The Klinkhåmer Special, or Klinkhammer as it’s often known, or even just Klink, is a very popular fly originating from Western Europe. Tied with a parachute hackle, it is an emerging caddis pattern fished during corresponding hatches. Colour and size variations of the fly adapt it for use during other hatches and make it useful as a searching fly in a similar way to the Adams. The Klinkhåmer Special is traditionally a trout and grayling pattern but should be considered for all kinds of fishing situations where fish will rise to a fly; it’s certainly been used to take Salmon and I’ve caught some good size chub with it. How to fish: Originally fished to best effect by it’s author using a ‘downstream’ presentation, the pattern is effective when presented using any standard dry fly technique. Effective for trout, grayling, and any free rising species. Recipe: Hook: 8 - 20 Partridge 15BN or 15BNX or Orvis Klinkhammer 8A00 or a curved caddis hook Thread: Grey or Tan Body: Fly-Rite poly 2 dubbing light-tan or to suit Wing: White poly-yarn Hackle: Blue-dun cock hackle Thorax: Peacock herl Variations: The hooks 15BN and 15BNX are the current patterns from Partridge.
