1 Photo: Alex Hurst REDUX This Redux box set is on the 30 Hertz Records label, which I started in 1997. Many of the tracks on this box set originated on 30 Hertz. I did have a label in the early eighties called Lago, on which I released some of my first solo records. These were re-released on 30 Hertz Records in the early noughties. 30 Hertz Records was formed in order to give me a refuge away from the vagaries of corporate record companies. It was one of the wisest things I have ever done. It meant that, within reason, I could commission myself to make whatever sort of record took my fancy. For a prolific artist such as myself, it was a perfect situation. No major record company would have allowed me to have released as many albums as I have. At the time I formed the label, it was still a very rigid business; you released one album every few years and ‘toured it’ in the hope that it became a blockbuster. On the other hand, my attitude was more similar to most painters or other visual artists. I always have one or two records on the go in the same way they always have one or two paintings in progress. My feeling has always been to let the music come, document it by releasing it then let the world catch up in its own time. Hopefully, my new partnership with Cherry Red means that Redux signifies a new beginning as well as documenting the past.

RECORD DREAMS 50 Hallucinations and Visions of Rare and Strange Vinyl Vinyl, to: vb. A neologism that describes the process of immersing yourself in an antique playback format, often to the point of obsession - i.e. I’m going to vinyl at Utrecht, I may be gone a long time. Or: I vinyled so hard that my bank balance has gone up the wazoo. The end result of vinyling is a record collection, which is defned as a bad idea (hoarding, duplicating, upgrading) often turned into a good idea (a saleable archive). If you’re reading this, you’ve gone down the rabbit hole like the rest of us. What is record collecting? Is it a doomed yet psychologically powerful wish to recapture that frst thrill of adolescent recognition or is it a quite understandable impulse to preserve and enjoy totemic artefacts from the frst - perhaps the only - great age of a truly mass art form, a mass youth culture? Fingering a particularly juicy 45 by the Stooges, Sweet or Sylvester, you could be forgiven for answering: fuck it, let’s boogie! But, you know, you’re here and so are we so, to quote Double Dee and Steinski, what does it all mean? Are you looking for - to take a few possibles - Kate Bush picture discs, early 80s Japanese synth on the Vanity label, European Led Zeppelin 45’s (because of course they did not deign to release singles in the UK), or vastly overpriced and not so good druggy LPs from the psychedelic fatso’s stall (Rainbow Ffolly, we salute you)? Or are you just drifting, browsing, going where the mood and the vinyl takes you? That’s where Utrecht scores.

THE BIG MIDWEEK: LIFE INSIDE THE FALL PDF, EPUB, EBOOK Steve Hanley,Olivia Piekarski | 448 pages | 15 Jul 2016 | Route Publishing | 9781901927658 | English | Glasshoughton, Yorks, United Kingdom The Big Midweek: Life Inside the Fall PDF Book I love The Fall and MES is clearly a genius imho however it takes a brilliant book by the unsung Steve Hanley to really drive home the contribution of the many other band members over, as MES would say himself, "the long, long days of our youth. Absolutely crushing. A wonderful reminder of what it once meant to be in a genuinely dangerous and groundbreaking group. Utterly essential for The Fall fan in your life. Humorous and engaging. Mar 06, Jay Green rated it liked it. Hanley suffers; all The Fall suffers. One of the best books on music I've read in a long time. Other editions. Also a shout out to Colin, their Scottish roadie, whose proclamations Hanley writes phonetically, very funny. Following along and listening to their discography chronologically while reading was a revelation - would have appreciated an epilogue, though! Mainly this was because of the personality of Mark Edward Smith, one of the more obtuse characters to emerge from the nexus of northern punk. There are priceless Smith quotes that sound verbatim to anyone familiar with his turn of phrase. No trivia or quizzes yet. Nice to see Marc Riley come out of it well. The Fall always give you something other than what you expect: this superb book is just another example of this from the sufficiently, occasionally sober bassist who lived to tell the tale.

1 Mark's spell reached me through his records, and since always and forever I took it for granted that he would remain unapproachable – in more ways than one. "Never meet your heroes" as MES once said. And that’s how it would remain, apart from close proximity every so often (post-gig in the back stairwell at Krazy House in Liverpool 1997: just me and the man who I flew across the Atlantic to see perform in his indigenous environment. “Up the stairs mister!” I could practically hear MES cackle as he swerved past to avoid physical contact – I was wearing a massive winter coat (I’d imagined that he’d alluded to it derogatorily on stage: “a jacket like that, in weather like this... HUP!”) The Fall gripped me early in life. I didn't ask for it, it came and sought me out with smoky tendrils like the ones portrayed on the Early Years 77-79 compilation. Live at the Witch Trials was purchased for me in Salem MA - of all places. It was exactly one day after my 17th birthday. At Salem Record Exchange my uncle (a distinguished local artisan with finely honed musical tastes) held an armful of Jamaican LPs and said "The Fall are great. I have too many records, but I can't not buy this, so, Happy Birthday." Off we went to his apartment at 12 Cowell Street in Marblehead MA where I listened to the first track, Frightened. "He sounds just like Johnny Rotten" I said, unenthused. "No - he's a bit different, listen." It sounded like a bad Doors album.
