In assuming, with pardonaljle pride, the labor of preparing a Cipher Code adapted to the business of the several Organizations of Railway Employes, the au- has endeavored to bring it thoroughly up to the requirements of the times. It is not to be expected that a work of this kind can be perfected by any one man in the first edition and the author requests those using this little book to note its short-comings for future reference, that he who undertakes the labor of revision, may have the benefit of their experience. The need of a work of this kind has at times been sorely felt by every organization and if this work meets the requirements so far as to lighten the burden of any organization in time of trouble, or to assist in gaining a single point in favor of the laboring man. then the author will feel that he has been fully repaid for his labor. To the several Organizations of Railway Emplo3'es this vrork is dedicated with the good will and best Avishes of the author. INSTRUCTIONS.

This Cipher Code arranged for use of the several Organizations of Railway Employes is intended more especiall}' for Telegraphic Correspondence in time of trouble, when it is desirable or necessary to send tele- grams that can not be read by any but those for whom they are intended, as is the case in time of strikes or other important moves on the part of an Organization, as it is often necessary to use the Company's wire to reach members of the Organization on other parts of the road and unless such telegrams can be sent in a safe cipher it would be better the}^ were not sent, as the Company would be forewarned of every contem- plated move mentioned in the telegram. This Cipher by use of a key number known only to the trusted members of your own Organization, is as safe as it is possible to make one, and should it be found necessary at any time to change the key, as a still further pre- caution against some who might have come in posses- sion of the first, it is easily done by notifying those holding these books, either hy letter or messenger of the change and giving the number selected. You will note that the numbered cipher words begin under the heading, "Organizations and Officers," beginning on page 14. This plan was adopted after careful study and deliberation, as a safeguard for the reason that a telegram giving a number a name, or in reference to anything that occurred on a certain day would, if the same key number applied to the entire book, be a clew that would lead to the discovery of your key number. Therefore, I have used numbers only where I believed it was safe to do so. To further explain the use of numbers, I will give an illustration of the manner of using the Code. I will 4 : : take 3 for a key number, which means that instead of writing the cipher word that represents the word or phrase I wish to use in the telegram, I will write the third word following it. For example I want to send a telegram as follows "Action has not been taken. Am anxiousl}^ await- ing your arrival."' This in cipher, using the key number 3, would be written "Bribing cancelling carted." In translating this telegram, you must of course read the third definition in the Code above the cipher word given in the telegram. The numbers are placed there so that you may find your word, when writing or definition when reading a telegram, b}'^ addition and substraction, instead of counting ahead or back, which would be very inconvenient in case your key number was a large number. One thing must not be overlooked when selecting a key number, you must always add to in writing and subtract to read. When you wish to transmit a message in cipher, 5-0U should first write your message in full, then refer to your Code and find the first word or phrase and add your ke3' number to the number found in the left hand column opposite the phrase, the total found by this ad- dition will give you the number of the cipher word to write. When this has been done check off as much of 3-our telegram as the cipher word already written rep- resents and proceed in a like manner with each word or phrase until your message has been written in cipher. Never use an5-thing but cipher words in a cipher message, excepting the name of a person or the name of a town. When it is deemed necessary to write these in a cipher, spell them out, using the Cipher Alphabet found on page 7. INDEX,
