The spooky night has become a country-wide tradition, that some people are willing to change. According to a petition on Change.org, nearly 151,000 people wouldn’t mind if Hallow- een were to be on the last Saturday of October, rather than Oct. 31 every year. The peti- tion, created by the Halloween and Costume Association, is rapidly expanding; it has even gained attention from the White House. When informed of this controversy, students at the Park had varied responses, almost split down the middle on opinion. Lauren Dani, Canton senior, disagrees with the petition, along with 50% of students surveyed. She claims that October 31 should continue to host Halloween because, “it’s always been a tradition to have it on the 31. The whole point of the holiday is to be on that day because there are evil spirits, so changing the holiday would make it (Halloween) meaningless.” She also brought up that although Halloween on a weekday makes it more of a casual holiday, it would be more beneficial for families with younger children to have the spooky day on a weekend to prepare, relax, and not have to worry about work. In agreement with the other 50% of the students surveyed, Hannah Reding, Plymouth senior, believes that the holiday should land on a weekend to “make things easier for fami- lies.” Ultimately, Reding said, “I wouldn’t really care if the date switch proceeded, since I usually just hang out with friends or going to parties.” Reding strongly emphasized that having a full day to celebrate Halloween would allow for more time with friends and fam- ily to appreciate the spirit of the night together. Both parties agreed that whether the change happened or not, plans with friends, family and other activities would not be affected. Even with a perfectly split student opinion, the answer to the petition remains in the balance of the U.S. government.
