DESCRIPTION: Participants will be assessed on their knowledge of bats, with an emphasis on North American Bats, South American Microbats, and African MegaBats. A TEAM OF UP TO: 2 APPROXIMATE TIME: 50 minutes 2. EVENT PARAMETERS: a. Each team may bring one 2” or smaller three-ring binder, as measured by the interior diameter of the rings, containing information in any form and from any source. Sheet protectors, lamination, tabs and labels are permitted in the binder. b. If the event features a rotation through a series of stations where the participants interact with samples, specimens or displays; no material may be removed from the binder throughout the event. c. In addition to the binder, each team may bring one unmodified and unannotated copy of either the National Bat List or an Official State Bat list which does not have to be secured in the binder. 3. THE COMPETITION: a. The competition may be run as timed stations and/or as timed slides/PowerPoint presentation. b. Specimens/Pictures will be lettered or numbered at each station. The event may include preserved specimens, skeletal material, and slides or pictures of specimens. c. Each team will be given an answer sheet on which they will record answers to each question. d. No more than 50% of the competition will require giving common or scientific names. e. Participants should be able to do a basic identification to the level indicated on the Official List. Mammalian Diversity in the Savanna from Peru, with Three New Addictions from Country

MEDINA¹⁴ KATERYN PINO¹ ALEXANDER PARI¹ GABRIEL LLERENA¹ HORACIO ZEBALLOS² EVARISTO LÓPEZ¹³ ABSTRACT Bahuaja Sonene National Park protects the unique sample of subtropical humid savannas in Peru, which are known as “Pampas del Heath” with 6,136 hectares of area. Many endan‑ gered species and/or endemic from savannas occur there, however studies about the diversity of mammals in Pampas del Heath are limited and only three assessments there have been carried out since mid‑1970s. Therefore we surveyed mammals in three habitat types of the Pampas del Heath (savanna, ecotonal area and forest) during late 2011. We used several methods of record for the different mammal groups including 1) capture techniques with mist nets, snap traps, Sherman traps, Tomahawk traps and pitfall traps, 2) and detection techniques direct by means of camera traps, visualization of mammals during long walk, observation of tracks and interviews to local people. Total capture efforts totalized 6,033 trap/nights, 136 mist‑net/nights and 108 cameras/nights. Sixty‑nine species of mammals were recorded: 33 in savanna, 33 in ecotonal area and 38 in forest. Sixteen species are new records for the Pampas del Heath and three are new records from Peru (Cryptonanus unduaviensis, Rhogeessa hussoni and Rhogeessa io). Analyses on the sampling effort, relative density, diversity and community structure of small mammals were made for the three habitats types. -

This insectivorous species has a wide but poorly known neotropical distribution. This study documents the first record of the species for the Sama Valley, Tacna department, Perú. In addition, a current distribution map of the species is presented together with facts concerning its dietary composition. The specimen was collected using mist nets during a local bat study and compared with N. aurispinosus individuals in the scientific collection of the Museo de Historia Natural Javier Prado, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. The distribution map was made of published records and the diet of the specimen was analyzed by stereoscopy of the contents of its digestive tract. -

In the Brazilian Pantanal, virtually no studies of communities of bats, despite the richness of spcies. As the chiropterofauna in the Pantanal is still poorly known, this works purpose was to verify the diversity, trophic guild and similarity in three sub-areas (Aquidauana, Miranda-Abobral and Nhecolândia) of the Pantanal, Mato Grosso do Sul. From May 1994 to November 2004, 221 sampling sessions were performed, using mist nets and capture effort of 17,148,495 h m2, 2.818 bats were captured, belonging to 34 species distributed in 5 families (Emballonuridae, Molossidae, Noctilionidae, Phyllostomidae and Vespertilionidae). The families Molossidae (n = 9) and Phyllostomidae (n = 15) showed the greatest number of species and the predominant genus was Myotis (4). Twenty seven species were recorded in Aquidauana sub-region, 23 in Miranda-Abobral and 30 in Nhecolândia. The species diversity (Shannon H index) was greater in the Nhecolândia (3.33), followed by Aquidauana (3.12) and Miranda-Abobral (2.0). -
