Wimsatt the possibility of bringing together a volume devoted to the reproductive biology of Chiroptera. Our idea, at that time, was to present such a work as Volume 4 in the Biology of Bats. Many events interfered with the initiation of such a review, and finally the untimely death of Dr Wimsatt almost permanently set it aside. It is to Bill’s vision and memory that we gratefully and lovingly dedicate this volume. He is sorely missed not only for his contributions to this science but for his deep and sincere friendship and support. The great and ever growing interest in these unique and highly specialized mammals and the many new findings about their reproduction caused us to realize the importance of bringing together the available data concerning the reproductive aspect of the life history of these mammals. Knowledge of reproductive events and their controlling mechanisms may ultimately be central to the management of vulnerable populations. Perhaps the application of assisted reproductive technologies will become critical. The current knowledge of the reproductive biology of bats is fragmentary, appears in a wide range of scientific literature, and only concerns a small fraction of the 960+ species of Chiroptera. This mammalian order is worldwide in distribution and comprises nearly 25 per cent of the existing living mammal fauna. Volumes that synoptically consider aspects of bat reproduction include: Slaughter and Walton (1970), Kunz (1982, 1984), Hill and Smith (1984) and Altringham (1996). A comprehensive volume reviewing this critically significant area of chiropteran biology, however, is lacking and leaves us without an in-depth compilation of pertinent literature, which is worldwide, in many languages and often difficult to obtain. Our aim is to summarize (in one volume) the current knowledge of reproductive biology in bats. Perhaps this will provide a stimulus to students and/or established investigators to find answers to some of the many unknowns. Authors contributing to this volume were selected on their contributions to the subject field that they were to review. Their reviews were to bring forth and summarize data on specific topics. Each chapter was to include and summarize primarily reviews of the published literature and, less often, original work in progress. Contributors were encouraged to freely develop their ideas and presentations which resulted in some, but meaningful, redundancy. We are forever grateful to a number of individuals who helped make this immense task possible. We wish to thank our spouses Dorothy and Harold for their special support and understanding. The present investigation was undertaken to evaluate the healing efficacy of lyophilized aqueous leaf extract of Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L., family Elaeagnaceae) (SBT) and to explore its possible mechanism of action on experimental burn wounds in rats. The SBT extract, at various concentrations, was applied topically, twice daily for 7 days. Treatment with silver sulfadiazine (SSD) ointment was used as reference control. The most effective concentration of the extract was found to be 5.0% (w/w) for burn wound healing and this was further used for detailed study. The SBT-treated group showed faster reduction in wound area in comparison with control and SSD-treated groups. The topical application of SBT increased collagen synthesis and stabilization at the wound site, as evidenced by increase in hydroxyproline, hexosamine levels and up-regulated expression of collagen type-III.

Six species of bats (n = 272) were caught at Ravenna Training and Logistics Site during summer 2004: 122 big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus), 100 little brown myotis (Myotis lucifugus), 26 red bats (Lasiurus borealis), 19 northern myotis (Myotis septentrionalis), three hoary bats (Lasiurus cinereus), and two eastern pipistrelles (Pipistrellus subflavus). Catch was 9.7 bats/net site (SD = 10.2) and 2.4 bats/net night (SD = 2.6). No bats were captured at two net sites and only one bat was caught at one site; the largest captures were 33, 36, and 37 individuals. Five of six species were caught at two sites, 2.7 (SD = 1.4) species were caught per net site, and MacArthur’s diversity index was 2.88. Evidence of reproduction was obtained for all species. Chi-square tests indicated no difference in catch of males and reproductive females in any species or all species combined. Evidence was found of two maternity colonies each of big brown bats and little brown myotis. Capture of big brown bats (X2 = 53.738; P <0.001), little brown myotis (X2 = 21.900; P <0.001), and all species combined (X2 = 49.066; P <0.001) was greatest 1 – 2 hours after sunset.

Based on museum and literature records, seventeen species were known to occur in this region. All seventeen were identified during this study: fourteen by capture and release, and three by acoustic detection only (Euderma maculatum, Eumops perotis, and Lasiurus blossevillii). Mist-netting was conducted at nineteen sites in a six county area. There were marked differences among sites both in the number of individuals captured per unit effort and the number of species encountered. The five most frequently encountered species in net captures were: Myotis yumanensis, Lasionycteris noctivagans, Myotis lucifugus, Eptesicus fuscus, and Myotis californicus; the five least common were Pipistrellus hesperus, Myotis volans, Lasiurus cinereus, Myotis ciliolabrum, and Tadarida brasiliensis. Twelve species were confirmed as having reproductive populations in the study area. Sampling sites were assigned to a habitat class: young growth (YG), multi-age stand (MA), old growth (OG), and rock dominated (RK). There was a significant response to habitat class for the number of bats captured, and a trend towards differences for number of species detected.

This species has few confirmed records throughout its distribution. Here we report the first record of L. egregius from the northern coast of Paraná state, southern Brazil. We captured a female individual of L. egregius using an ultrathin mist-net installed over a river knee, at Salto Morato Natural Reserve, municipality of Guaraqueçaba. This is the fourteenth locality with confirmed occurrence of L. egregius, being eight of them in Brazil. The knowledge on the bat fauna in Paraná has been increasing in recent decades, mainly due to the new studies in coast areas of this state.
