Minhagim and Halakhot FOR DAVENING @ HOME Shemini Atzeret & Simchat Torah 5781 (October 9 – 16, 2020) By Rabbi Elazar Muskin

The following guide has been compiled to help in lieu of davening with a Minyan. May we all merit a healthy and uplifting Yom Tov.

Erev Shemini Atzeret – Friday, October 9th • Recite a regular Mincha but insert Ya’aleh V’Yavo for Sukkot in the Amida. Omit saying . • When lighting Yom Tov candles recite Lehadlik Ner Shel Shabbat V’Shel Yom Tov and Shehecheyanu. • An abridged Kabbalat Shabbat is recited. It begins with Mizmor Shir L’yom HaShabbat. Bameh Madlikin should be omitted. • Both V’Shamru and VaYedaber Moshe are recited before the Amida. • Recite the Maariv Amida for Yom Tov with proper insertions for Shabbat and Shemini Atzeret (note: the change to Shemini Atzeret instead of Sukkot – If you should make a mistake and say Sukkot, and only realize the error after concluding the Brakha you do not repeat the Amida) . • After the Maariv Amida recite Vayechulu but not Magen Avot and Elokeinu V’Elokei Avotenu. They are only said when davening with a permanent Minyan. It is customary to recite Vayechulu together with either another male or female. • After Aleynu recite Tehilim chapter 27, L’David Hashem. • Eat your Seudah in a Sukkah but do not recite the Brakha of Leshev Ba’Sukkah. • Kiddush should begin with Vayechulu like on every Friday night followed by a Yom Tov Kiddush with Shabbat insertions. At the end of Kiddush recite the Brakha of Shehecheyanu. • should include insertions for Shabbat and Shemini Atzeret.

Shemini Atzeret – Shabbat, October 10th • Shacharit – Regular Shabbat - Yom Tov davening. Recite the Yom Tov Amida with Shabbat insertions. • Recite a full with Brakhot. • Do not say . This is recited only when davening with a Minyan. • After Shacharit recite the for Shabbat and L’David Hashem. This is the last time we say L’David Hashem this year. • Although there is a custom to read Kohelet, one is not obligated to do so. • Do not say the Tefilot recited before taking out the Torah. They are recited only when davening with a Minyan. • The (from a Chumash) is Devarim (14:22-16:17) and Bamidbar (29:35-30:1). The Haftorah is from Melachim Aleph (8:54-9:1). • Recite the Tefilah for the American Government, Mi Sheberach for the IDF and the Tefilah for Medinat Yisrael. • Skip both chapters of Y’kum Purkan and the Mi Sheberach. They are said only when davening with a Minyan. • Yizkor may be recited without a Minyan. The Halakha notes that one should pledge Tzedakah in memory of our loved ones before reciting Yizkor. • Even if you are not saying Yizkor one should say Av HaRachamim.

The Amida is a Yom Tov Amida with Shabbat and Shemini Atzeret insertions. • Remember to say Mashiv HaRuach U’Morid HaGeshem. • Eat Seudah Shlishit preferably after Mincha but before 6:25 PM.

Simchat Torah Night – Saturday, October 10th • Preparations for Simchat Torah and lighting candles should begin after 7:10 PM. • When lighting Yom Tov candles recite Lehadlik Ner Shel Yom Tov and Shehecheyanu. • Maariv should begin only after 7:10 PM. • In Maariv recite VaYedaber Moshe before the Amida. • The Maariv Amida is a Yom Tov Amida with the insertion of Va’tode’ainu. • Kiddush at home (do not eat in the Sukkah) includes Bore Pri HaGafen, Havdalah candle (use the two Yom Tov lights by putting them together, to serve as your Havdala hcandle), the special Havdalah blessing for when Yom Tov falls on Saturday night and Shehecheyanu. • Birkat HaMazon should include Ya’aleh V’Yavo for Shemini Atzeret.

Simchat Torah Day – Sunday, October 11th • Regular Yom Tov Shacharit. The Amida is a Yom Tov Amida with Shemini Atzeret insertions. • Recite a full Hallel with Brakhot. • Do not say Anim Zemirot. This is recited only when davening with a Minyan. ● Say the Shir Shel Yom for Sunday. • Do not say the Tefilot recited before taking out the Torah on a Yom Tov. They are recited only when davening with a Minyan.

• The Torah reading (from a Chumash) is V’Zot HaBrakha at the end of Devarim and Bereshit (1:1-2:3). The Maftir is from BaMidbar (29:35 -30:1). Haftorah is from Sefer Yehoshua (1:1 – 1:18). • Mussaf is a regular Yom Tov Amida with Shemini Atzeret insertions. • Mincha may be said as early as 1:10 PM but no later than 6:15 PM (Shkiah is @ 6:25 PM). • Mincha is a regular Yom Tov Amida with insertions for Shemini Atzeret. • Weekday Maariv should be recited. In the Amida include Atah Chonantanu. • Havdalah consists of two Berakhot: HaGafen and HaMavdil (no Besamim or Eish). • Yom Tov ends at 7:09 PM.

Isru Chag – Monday, October 12th • Recite a regular weekday Shacharit. • Omit Tachanun at Shacharit and Mincha.

• Omit Kel Erech Apayim before taking out the Torah, the Yehi Ratzon prayers after reading the Torah, and Lamenatzeach between and U’va L’Tziyon.

Tuesday, October 13th - Friday, October 16th • Recite a regular weekday Shacharit, Mincha and Maariv. • Omit Tachanun at Shacharit and Mincha. • During Shacharit insert Lamenatzeach between Ashrei and U’va L’Tziyon and on Thursday say Kel Erech Apayim before taking out the Torah but not the Yehi Ratzon prayers after reading the Torah. • On Friday light candles by 5:59 PM, and Mincha should be said no later than 6:05 PM.

Recite the Yom Tov Amida with Shabbat insertions. • Recite a full Hallel with Brakhot followed by the Chazan saying Shalem. • Anim Zemirot is recited followed by Shir Shel Yom for Shabbat with the Mourner’s Kaddish and L’David Hashem with the Mourner’s Kaddish. (note: this is the last time we say L’David Hashem this year). • Although there is a custom to read Kohelet, because of our davening outside, Rav Hershel Schachter permitted that we do not read Kohelet and recommend that everyone study it at home. • We recite the Tefilot before taking out the Torah but we omit Hashem Hashem because it is Shabbat. • The Torah reading, with seven Aliyot, is from Devarim (14:22-16:17). Maftir is from Bamidbar (29:35-30:1). The Haftorah is from Melachim Aleph (8:54-9:1). • Recite the Tefilah for the American Government, Mi Sheberach for the IDF and the Tefilah for Medinat Yisrael. • Y’kum Purkan and the Mi Sheberach are said. • Yizkor is recited. The Halakha notes that one should pledge Tzedakah in memory of our loved ones before reciting Yizkor. • Before Yizkor begins, the Chazan says three Kel Maleh prayers with everyone present. One for the members of the Shul who have died. One for the 6 Million “Kedoshim” killed by the Nazis. One for those who died in defense of the State of Israel.

• After the Kel Maleh prayers are completed those not saying Yizkor should quietly leave the Minyan while adhering to social distancing. • Even if you are not saying Yizkor one should say Av HaRachamim when Yizkor ends. • Before Mussaf begins the Rabbi or Gabbai announces that we should remember to insert Mashiv HaRuach U’Morid HaGeshem in the Amida. • Mussaf is a regular Yom Tov Amida with Shabbat and Shemini Atzeret insertions. • During Hazarat HaShatz, Tefilat Geshem is sung by the Chazan. The Sefrei Torah on the Shulchan are uncovered. • Adir Adereinu is not recited by the Chazan in the Mussaf Kedusha. • One should eat the Shabbat Seudah in the Sukkah but not say the Brakha of Leshev Ba’Sukkah. At the conclusion of lunch many have the custom of saying a short Yehi Ratzon prayer saying good-bye to the Sukkah. • Recite a regular Shabbat/Yom Tov Mincha. The Amida is a Yom Tov Amida with Shabbat and Shemini Atzeret insertions.

Simchat Torah Night – Saturday, October 10th • Preparations for Simchat Torah and lighting candles should begin after 7:10 PM. • When lighting Yom Tov candles recite Lehadlik Ner Shel Yom Tov and Shehecheyanu. • Maariv should begin only after 7:10 PM. • In Maariv recite VaYedaber Moshe before the Amida. • The Maariv Amida is a Yom Tov Amida with the insertion of Va’tode’ainu. • Atah Hareita LaDa’at is recited verse by verse before HaKafot. • Holding a Sefer Torah the Chazan will be the only one doing HaKafot by circling around the Shulchan. After each HaKafa a song should be sung. • After the HaKafot are completed the Chazan holds the Torah and says and Echad Hu Elokenu to the tune used on the Yamim Noraim. The Gabbai calls up five Aliyot with the text of Vetegaleh. The Ba’al Kriyah uses the tune of Yamim Noraim. The Torah reading is from V’Zot HaBrakha (Devarim 33:1-26). • Hatzi Kaddish is recited after the Torah reading on Simhat Torah night. • One person does both Hagbah and Gelilah. The Torah is lifted for Hagbah in the inverted fashion. • Alyenu is said followed by the Mourner’s Kaddish. We conclude Maariv with singing . • Kiddush at home (do not eat in the Sukkah) includes Borei Pri HaGafen, Havdalah candle (use the two Yom Tov lights by putting them together, to serve as your Havdalah candle), the special Havdalah blessing for when Yom Tov falls on Saturday night and Shehecheyanu. • Birkat HaMazon should include Ya’aleh V’Yavo for Shemini Atzeret.

Simchat Torah Day – Sunday, October 11th • Regular Yom Tov Shacharit. The Amida is a Yom Tov Amida with Shemini Atzeret insertions. • This year, since there will be no Kiddushim at our Minyanim, Rav Schachter has advised that the Kohanim do not Duchen during Shacharit but rather during Mussaf like on every Yom Tov. The Duchening should be done similar to how they Duchen in Israel. • Recite a full Hallel with Brakhot. • Anim Zemirot followed by the Shir Shel Yom for Sunday are said right after Hallel. The Mourner’s Kaddish is said after the Shir Shel Yom. • Atah Hareita LaDa’at is recited verse by verse before Hakafot. • The Sefer Torah should be placed on the Shulchan.

• Holding a Sefer Torah the Chazan will be the only one doing Hakafot by circling around the Shulchan. After each Hakafa a song should be sung. • After HaKafot the Chazan says Shema Yisrael and Echad Hu Elokenu to the tune used on the Yamim Noraim. We do not say Hashem Hashem on Simchat Torah. • Because of Covid-19 the custom to distribute Aliyot to everyone will not take place this year. Only five Aliyot will be read from V’Zot HaBrakha (Devarim 33:1-26). The tune of Yamim Noraim is used. The Gabbai calls the Aliyot also using the Yamim Noraim tune. • After the five Aliyot, Hatan Torah is called up with the special Tefilah known as Reshut. The reading is from Devarim (33:27-34:12). Everyone stands for this reading. When the Torah is concluded the congregation calls out Chazak, Chazak, V’nitchazek. • Hagbah and Gelilah are performed by one person. The Torah is lifted in the inverted fashion and returned to the Shulchan for Gelilah. • Hatan Bereshit is called up with the special Tefilah known as Reshut. The Torah reading is from Bereshit (1:1-2:3). Everyone stands during this Aliyah. • At this juncture Hatzi Kaddish is recited followed by Hagbah and Gelilah which are performed by one person. • The Maftir is read to the regular tune. The Maftir is from BaMidbar (29:35 -30:1) followed by Hagbah and Gelilah which are performed by one person. • Haftorah is from Sefer Yehoshua (1:1 – 1:18). • After the Haftorah, Ashrei is said and the Sifrei Torah are returned to the Aron or covered on the Shulchan. The Chazan recites a Hatzi Kaddish. • Mussaf is a regular Yom Tov Amida with Shemini Atzeret insertions. • The Kohanim should Duchen during Mussaf. • The Chazan says Kaddish Shalem upon concluding Hazarat HaShatz followed by Ein Kelokenu through Aleynu and then the Mourner’s Kaddish is recited. • Mincha is a regular Yom Tov Amida with insertions for Shemini Atzeret. • Weekday Maariv should be recited. In the Amida include Atah Chonantanu. • Havdalah consists of two Berakhot: HaGafen and HaMavdil (no Besamim or Eish). • Yom Tov ends at 7:09 PM.

Isru Chag – Monday, October 12th • Recite a regular weekday Shacharit. • Omit Tachanun at Shacharit and Mincha. • Omit Kel Erech Apayim before taking out the Torah, the Yehi Ratzon prayers after reading the Torah, and Lamenatzeach between Ashrei and U’va L’Tziyon.

Tuesday, October 13th - Friday, October 16th • Recite a regular weekday Shacharit, Mincha and Maariv. • Omit Tachanun at Shacharit and Mincha. • During Shacharit insert Lamenatzeach between Ashrei and U’va L’Tziyon and on Thursday say Kel Erech Apayim before taking out the Torah but not the Yehi Ratzon prayers after reading the Torah. • On Friday light candles by 5:59 PM, and Mincha is at 6:05 PM.
