Title of Thesis/Project/Extended Essay The Quantitative and Qualitative Sisnificance of Fossil and Subfossil Remains in Archaeology - (signature) Peter T. Bobrowsky Abstract This study is concerned with the interpretation of gastropod re~aixE f r cm archaeological sites in the Yukon Territory, Illinoi~and Kentucky. Emphasis is placed oc the application cf simple statistical models and analyses to the interpretatica cf prehistoric cultural atd environmental shifts. Furthermore, a collation of known modern ecological parameters of the identified species is provided and employed in the qualitative interpretation of paleoenvisonmental conditions. An historical review of molluscan zooarchaeology is presented tc shcw the gradual development of changing research objectives and nethodologies in snail analysis. Sirnila rly, a formalized outline of the mechanisms for shell introduction i~toarchaeological sites is presented ir. detail.. These mechanisms are evaluated for their sig~ificancein contrikuting to shell accumulations recovered in both natural and cultural deposits. Emphasis is also placed on the recovery techniques employed in shell retrieval and the subsequent ~resentaticnof numerical data in the published record. Variability in these two aspeczs is shown to be a significart source of bias in the interpretation cf data. iii The concegt of ecological diversity is examined and a method for its measurement is presented and applied to archaeological gastropod samples. Variations in diversit y between samples is shown to be an important element in assemblage interpretations. Similarly, the truncated lognormal distribution is applied to various archaeological samples to illustrate how the representative nature of sam~lescan be st atistically assessed. In general, tkis study illustrates the need for greater rigor in the analysis of gastropod remains from archaeological contexts. They preserve well, are readily identifiable, and are susceptible to quantitative analysis. A portion of this remnant, composed of wetland, grassland and forest, is protected by the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) in southern Manitoba. This heterogene- ous ecosystem has rich biodiversity; however, gastropods have not been surveyed in Canada’s tall grass prairie. We studied gastropods in Prairie, Wet Meadow, Forest, and Wet Forest habitats of the Manitoba Tall Grass Prairie Preserve that vary with respect to land management practices (prescribed burning, grazing by cattle). Gastropod community composition was unique in the Prairie where mounds of grass litter form permanently moist cavities harbouring aquatic species, while dry-habitat species colonized the upper parts of these mounds. Gastropod communities in Prairie habitats were negatively affected by grazing and burning that occurred in the five years prior to our survey.

A total of 64 species was documented accounting for 60 new county or District records. Paralaoma servilis (Shuttleworth) and Zonitoides nitidus (Müller) are recorded for the first time from Virginia and Euconulus polygyratus (Pilsbry) is confirmed from the state. Previously unreported growth forms of Punctum smithi Morrison and Stenotrema barbatum (Clapp) are described. Key words: District of Columbia, Euconulus polygyratus, Gastropoda, land snails, Maryland, national park, Paralaoma servilis, Punctum smithi, Stenotrema barbatum, Virginia, Zonitoides nitidus.     Biological Inventory of the Cave and Karst Systems of The Nature Conservancy’s Sharp-Bingham Mountain Preserve James Godwin Alabama Natural Heritage Program Environmental Institute Auburn University Auburn, AL 36849 ©Alan Cressler 1 Introduction Overview of Karst and Caves (adapted from Palmer 2007; White 2008) Karst is a landform or landscape with the characteristics of caves, sinkholes, subterranean streams, and springs. These topographical features have formed from the dissolution, rather than mechanical, eroding of the underlying bedrock. This dissolutional process is based on the actions of a weak carbonic acid solution reacting with the basic limestone. Raindrops, as they pass through the atmosphere, pick up carbon dioxide and form a weak carbonic acid solution. Limestone, a type of calcium carbonate, is easily dissolved by this mildly acidic water. Over time rainwater percolates along horizontal and vertical fissures and joints of the limestone bedrock and these joints and fissures gradually become widened and deepened, eventually coalescing into an underground drainage system of conduits. Caves formed by this process are termed solution caves. While the lifespan of a cave, from the initial phase of development to deterioration, may be on the order of tens of thousands to a few million years, geologically they are regarded as being transient. Cave “life history” can be divided into the following sequential phases: initiation, enlargement, stagnation, and destruction. Each phase in the life cycle of a cave presents new invasion and niche expansion opportunities for organisms associated with these subterranean features. During the phase of initiation, as water moves through a multitude of fissures dissolving bedrock, the smallest fissures of 10 to 50 micrometers wide are enlarged to widths of 5 to 10 millimeters.

Mighels, then of Portland, presented to the Boston Society of Natural History a catalogue of the shells of Maine, which was accepted and published by them in the fourth volume of their Journal. Since that time the number of species of terrestrial and fluviatile Mollusca detected in the State has been nearly doubled. To make these additions known, I commenced the preparation of a simple catalogue. Such cata- logues, however brief, are of value in the study of geographical distribution, which is rapidly becoming an element of v^st import- ance in the study of Zoology. At the same time their value is greatly enhanced by observations concerning the relative scarcity or abundance, habits, etc., of each s^iecies. While making these brief notes, I was led to examine the subject still more closely. This paper, the result of that investigation, is offered as a first contribution to a more intimate knowledge of our native species. Preliminar list of the Punctoidea from the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazilazil, with description of two new species (Mollusca(Mollusca, Gastropodaopoda, Stylommatophora). The partial list of the land snails Punctoidea from the “Centro de Pesquisas e Conservação da Natureza Pró-Mata” (São Francisco de Paula, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil) (CPCN-PM) is presented herein. This list includes seven species, two of them new. The CPCN-PM is located between 600 and 950 m of altitude; it has a temperate super humid to humid climate, with 2,250 mm of annual rainfall and means annual temperature of 14.5ºC; three main phytoecological regions are present –mixed ombrophile forest, dense ombrophile forest and savanna. The taxa found are: Rotadiscus amancaezensis (Hidalgo, 1869), Lilloiconcha tucumana (Hylton Scott, 1963), Radiodiscus cuprinus Fonseca & Thomé, 2000, Radiodiscus tenellus Hylton Scott, 1957, Radiodiscus promatensis sp. nov.., Zilchogyra gordurasensis (Thiele, 1927) and Zilchogyra zulmae sp.
