À travers les diverses adaptations, sans avoir lu les récits du romancier nous connaissons ses histoires de voyageurs et d’explorateurs. C’est l’auteur français le plus traduit dans le monde. Ses récits destinés dans un premier temps à la jeunesse mêlent fantastique et fiction créant un genre nouveau. Par conséquent les affiches ont, au fil des années, confirmé un peu plus cet imaginaire et participé à une plus grande diffusion de son œuvre. Dès lors, elles accompagnent non seulement ses romans mais aussi l’ensemble des créations dérivées de son univers et développent ainsi une esthétique et une iconographie nouvelle. Les premières affiches à faire la promotion des romans de Jules Verne sont celles de sa maison d’édition dans les années 1860. Les éditions Hetzel, créées par Pierre-Jules Hetzel, sont spécialisées dans la

    ONOMÀSTICA BIBLIOTECA TÈCNICA DE POLÍTICA LINGÜÍSTICA European Train Names: a Historic Outline* Christian Weyers DOI: 10.2436/15.8040.01.201 Abstract This paper gives a first overview of the onomastic category of train names, searches to classify the corpus and reviews different stages of their productivity. Apart from geographical names (toponyms, choronyms, compass directions) generally indicating points of origin and destination of the trains in question, a considerable number of personal names have entered this category, of classical literary authors, musicians and scientists, but also of many fictional or non-fictional characters taken from literature or legendary traditions. In some cases also certain symbolic attributes of these persons and finally even heraldic figures have given their names to trains. In terms of their functionality, train names originally were an indicator of exclusiveness and high grade of travel quality, but they developed gradually, as they dispersed over the European continent, into a rather unspecific, generalized appellation, also for regional and local trains. After two periods of prosperity after 1950, the privatisation of railway companies starting in the 1990s had again a very positive effect on the category, as the number of named trains initially reached a new record in this decade. ***** The first train names appeared in England in the 1860s in addition to names for steam locomotives, and on two different levels. The Special Scotch Express between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh (inaugurated in 1862) was called by the public The Flying Scotsman from the 1870s, but it succeeded as the official name not before 1924. Also the names of the German diesel trainsets Der Fliegende Hamburger and Der Fliegende Kölner were colloquial name creations, as were the Train Bleu and the Settebello operated from 1922 and 1953 but officially named in 1947 and 1958, respectively.

Bell, Duke University The narrative logic of realist novels is causal, one event in a novel leads logically to another, and the deus ex machina is banished in favor of a logic of encounter and coincidence, organized around the structure of the biographies of individual novelistic characters evolving in a sort of “naturalized” space. Hugo’s Les Misérables is not always, perhaps not even principally, structured by this realist logic. It has been estimated, for example, that about twenty-five percent of the pages of the novel take the form of digressions, tied to narrative events in only loosely thematic ways, where Hugo discusses ideas and issues at a leisurely, didactic pace while the story in the narrative grinds to a screeching halt. It is almost as if the novel’s organization were a reactivation and exploitation of the classic rhetorical notion of the topos. Evans ABSTRACT: This article discusses how Verne mythologizes and poeticizes his fictional machines. More than just a means for solving problems and/or for providing access to exotic geographical locales, Verne’s technology is portrayed as being intrinsically poetic. Bridging the worlds of the industrial and the artistic, Verne’s machines constitute a new kind of objet d’art. Anthropomorphized to make them seem less coldly mechanical, these devices take on a life of their own and exist in a richly symbiotic relationship with their creators. Such machines transport the readers of Verne’s Voyages extraordinaires beyond the mimetic, serving both as a means to build verisimilitude and as a stepping-stone to transcend the real.
