D: The 1857 Salon Verne’s art-criticism essay is his last substantial prose work to remain untranslated. As can be seen, the style is alert and slightly self-deprecating: Two years ago already, the artists of every nation were invited to the Universal Exposition.1 After that competition with the rest of the world by French painters and sculptors, the government wanted to afford them two years’ rest; they well deserved it, having departed victorious from the arena where Landseer, Rauch, Cornelius, Mulready, Leys, Eastlake, and Tidemand had fought. This exposition of 1857 takes place, then, in particular circumstances, following such a great universal contest; it is more modest, more peaceful, more hopeful; its only fault is to come after its rowdy and militant elder; the forerunner splendidly called on known and unknown masterpieces by living artists; the successor, exceedingly French, will not offer this fervent interest, this provocative promiscuity of contending countries. ... At this 1857 Salon, are there numerous abstentions amongst the modern masters? This is to be feared, for many famous names are missing and with them, many paintings; this is an unfortunate event, and probably happens too often, due to a prejudice; it is indeed the duty of leaders of schools to appear at the head of their disciples; but perhaps artistic schools are tending to disappear, with everyone becoming their own leader and their own pupil, like Schaunard. There is a striking resurgence of artistic independence and personality, as can easily be observed in the activities of the Salon; critics may see it as a sign of either decadence or vitality, ideas we are not required to discuss here; but what will certainly not escape anyone’s notice is the influence of the political events of recent years on the imaginations of many of the artists. The Crimean War, for example, will certainly receive the honours of the Salon; its chief events are rehearsed in all possible guises and 296 styles; every episode is represented here to the point of surfeit; Sebastopol is stormed again and again; Malakoff and the Central Bastion are at every moment devastated anew by the bombs and shells of the allied armies; Zouaves and Highlanders fraternise in bivouacs no less often than they did in the actual fray. Is this perhaps not an abuse, and should we not regret that many artists of merit confine themselves to such an overbearing specialisation; this subject is independent of talent, I know; but why not abandon to the masters of this official kind of painting the responsibility for preserving the memory of our military glories? Following the Crimean war, the Loire and Rhone floods provided their contingents of dramatic situations; but these paintings, which cover a very large number of scenes, are really too complex to allow due force and clarity to be applied to the sense of an episode, the attraction of a single event to the charm of a pleasant detail. I repeat, the subject is here the focus, not the level of talent of its treatment; moreover, these canvases are eminently patriotic and will find many admirers. But perchance too, the connoisseur, the artist, the poet, lost in the midst of these military clashes, will find it difficult to encounter a great work symbolising a great idea; he will perhaps seek in vain a Roman Orgy by a Couture, a Last Day of the Condemned by a Muller.

The first is a continuation of my work done on Stuart Chase (various publications). I am still hopeful my efforts will inspire an historian to do a 1000 page biography on Stuart Chase. The second is further example why my idea of using Verne’s book as the basis for a one-day management seminar is worth trying. I’ve explored this idea with a number of friends and hope that this piece will take at least one of them to try this idea. I am classifying this as a casual piece and have no interest in this being written for a vigorous academic review.

Almost all the Voyages Extraordinaires written by Jules Verne refer to astronomy. In some of them, astronomy is even the leading theme. However, Jules Verne was basically not learned in science. His knowledge of astronomy came from contemporaneous popular publications and discussions with specialists among his friends or his family. In this article, I examine, from the text and illustrations of his novels, how astronomy was perceived and conveyed by Jules Verne, with errors and limitations on the one hand, with great respect and enthusiasm on the other hand. This informs us on how astronomy was understood by an “honnˆete homme” in the late 19th century. Keywords. Verne J., literature, 19th century 1. Introduction Jules Verne (1828–1905) wrote more than 60 novels which constitute the Voyages Extraordinaires series†. Most of them were scientific novels, announcing modern science fiction. However, following the strong suggestions of his editor Pierre-Jules Hetzel, Jules Verne promoted science in his novels, so that they could be sold as educational material to the youth (Fig. 1). Jules Verne had no scientific education. He relied on popular publications and discussions with specialists chosen among friends and relatives. This article briefly presents several examples of how astronomy appears in the text and illustrations of the Voyages Extraordinaires.

Jones, Jr. Abstract From 1941 to 1971, the Classics Illustrated series of comic-book adaptations of works by Shakespeare, Hugo, Dickens, Twain, and others provided a gateway to great literature for millions of young readers. Jules Verne was the most popular author in the Classics catalog, with ten titles in circulation. The first of these to be adapted, Michael Strogoff (June 1946), was the favorite of the Russian-born series founder, Albert L. Kanter. The last to be included, Tigers and Traitors (May 1962), indicated how far among the Extraordinary Voyages the editorial selections could range. This article explores the Classics Illustrated pictorial abridgments of such well-known novels as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Around the World in 80 Days and more esoteric selections such as Off on a Comet and Robur the Conqueror. Attention is given to both the adaptations and the artwork, generously represented, that first drew many readers to Jules Verne. Click on images to view in full size. I suppose I should first answer your own question: What has that question to do with the American Civil War? You probably didn't know, as I didn't know until a few days ago, that Jules Verne wrote two Civil War novels within ten years of the end of the war: The Blockade Runners (1871) and The Mysterious Island (1875), a sequel to Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870). Twelve years later, this French admirer of President Lincoln and General Grant published a third Civil War novel, North Against South. Answer: It was on Mysterious Island that Captain Nemo died. Although it was later published, illustrated, and is even now in print, The Blockade Runners is often not even listed as one of Verne's nearly 100 books, probably because it is really a 76-page novella first published in a book as an add-on to A Floating City (1871).

Phileas Fogg went to the Preform Club every day. He left his house at 7 Savile Row at 11.30 in the morning and walked to the club. He had his lunch and his dinner there. He read the papers at the club, and he played cards. He left late in the evening and walked back to Savile Row. He went to bed at midnight. Phileas Fogg was a cold man. He didn't talk much, and nobody knew much about him. But everything in his life had to be right. His washing water had to be at 31°C — not 30°C and not 32°C. At 9.37 on the morning of 2nd October 1872 his servant, James Forster, brought him water at 30°C, not 31°C. So this servant had to go. Phileas Fogg sat at home in his Savile Row house. He waited for his new servant. The new servant came. He was about thirty years old.
